I thought the two issues are connected - Trump finally started making money in the 00s (after losing everything prior to then) by using his real estate projects as money laundering conduits for the new Russian elite.
I'd be shocked if all of this isn't in some way connected and in the end Trump will get fully exposed as a full on con artist.
Seems a bit premature although it could be perfectly timed. The case will likely be running during midterm campaigns and it'll likely bring a lot of information into the public eye. It'll also discourage GOP members from attempting any questionable campaign tactics in fear of being exposed.
What's the point?
Increasing talk that Cohen will get indicted shortly.
Beautiful, just beautiful.
Can you or someone else help me figure out what it means? What's the context and ramifications?
One of the biggest things to come out of this if it proceeds is the discovery that will have to result from this - meaning a lot of documents etc that might have thus far not seen the light beyond Mueller's team would now have to be turned over for this case. I guess in theory it would seem it puts a tremendous amount of pressure on those parties to fight a battle on 2 fronts where Trump and Co probably would have hoped that the general counsel would be susceptible to negotiation to keep many of those things from ever seeing the light of day.Can you or someone else help me figure out what it means? Not sure this is a smart move by the Democrats. Suspect Trump might welcome an opportunity to grandstand on the Russia/Witch-hunt thing as distract from the Cohen thing
Also, to add to that it is probably a solid way to ensure voters are amped up in the lead up to the midterms. People forget quickly - this is a way for the DNC to ensure there are multiple paths to keeping the whole story playing - even if for some odd reason there is nothing in any of this. You would think though the DNC would not risk long lasting damage to its reputation beyond what it already suffered in the Presidential elections if it didn't have some assurances that this would end up being a net positive for them. Then again, it's not like politicians don't do stupid shit all the time.Eh he's already got plenty he'll use to try and do that anyway, and it's not as if he's ever been particularly kind to the Dems. I don't see this having too much of an impact, especially when the Cohen affair is a legal matter over which Trump's words have little bearing so long as he doesn't fire Mueller.
Just think it allows him to potentially muddy the waters. Any dark shit that comes out of the Cohen tapes could get put through the wash. Cohen tapes/Russian collusion - it's all FAKE news! etc. I dont think the Russian issue would have been less of something in play during the mid-terms had the Democrats not launched this legal action. Everything's pretty much at the forefront of everyone's mind already. I worry that if anything damaging comes out into the next few days unrelated directly to Russia that the 'Russia noise' could be used to drown it out.
But Trump's already got a ton of stuff he uses to muddy the waters when he feels like it. His base will lap up whatever he says in that respect - they already hate the Dems and this isn't going to change that.
It's not about the base it's about people who are yet to hear what might come out of the Cohen tapes who'll possibly be less likely to hear it now they've given Trump a chance to bung it all in with the collusion allegations. I don't get the timing at all. Potentially Trump is on the cusp of some real serious shit going down on the back of the Cohen tapes and rather than standing back and letting that news break and resonate, suddenly the Democrats do this and make everything about Russia again, allowing the news narrative to again centre Trump's denials and whip up the sense of witch-hunt again.
Providing Trump with a distraction isn't smart. If stories are true and they're far more worried by the Cohen potential than the central case of Russian collusion they'll welcome this lawsuit and the distraction it could bring, make no mistake. The timing makes no sense at all and actually looks a bit like a stunt, fuelling the 'its a witch hunt' fire even among those who dont make up his base.
How many people, after all these details so far, are actually on the fence about this? The only way one could make an argument for themselves that the collusion was fake is if they're on a next level of delusion. It's not about the base it's about people who are yet to hear what might come out of the Cohen tapes who'll possibly be less likely to hear it now they've given Trump a chance to bung it all in with the collusion allegations. If there's anything explosive in the Cohen tapes then people are ultimately going to hear what's in them anyway. This from the Dems is just the beginning of a legal case - right now the groundwork will be getting laid, and if it doesn't serve as a distraction it'll just be one of many Trump can opt from when he's trying to distract people on whatever issue he doesn't want them to see.
Of course anyone with a brain knows Trump is shady as feck, but the fact is not everyone has a brain. There are people on the fence on the whole issue, people who a political party should be trying to win round. How many people, after all these details so far, are actually on the fence about this? Of course people will ultimately hear what's in the tapes but it makes absolutely no fecking sense to do it now risking attention being taken away from it. If you're benefiting politically from something you don't make noise elsewhere and reason 'oh people will probably hear both anyway'. You shut the feck up and let what else it is going on that may benefit you, happen. You don't release two singles at the same time and say that people will probably hear both anyway so what does it matter. From the position of how to manage the situation it seems almost goofy launching a lawsuit against everyone suddenly.
There has to be some kind of cohesion. You can't just make as much noise as possible and shrug that people are probably going to hear all of it anyway so it doesn't matter. Especially when your opponent is a guy who has demonstrable mastered the whole 'how to make enough noise so people stop listening and nothing's damaging any more' art of politicking.
To be fair, I too find the suit weird on timing. My only other thought about why it came to be is because they anticipate Mueller being fired and want to have an investigation in place for themselves.Of course anyone with a brain knows Trump is shady as feck, but the fact is not everyone has a brain. There are people on the fence on the whole issue, people who a political party should be trying to win round.
Launching a lawsuit against Trump, Wikileaks, Russia, Hulk Hogan and whoever the hell else is included makes that job harder.
By this logic they shouldn't bother at all though considering we have constant ongoing feck-ups from the White House and constant new developments regarding the Cohen case and Trump's Stormy Daniels problem. Ultimately I don't really think it matters all that much.
