I agree that they would rather sell us Bale. He is earning a huge salary plus he is 28, so it would be good business for them to sell now if they get Mbappe.
Asensio is still only 21 and on a much lower salary, so there is little or no motivation for Real to sell him. Plus, did he already sign the contract extension where they bump his release clause to £309m? Maybe the rumours have more to do with the negotiations around the contract than a real interest from United.

Or it could have to do with the fact that we've already spent a huge amount on a striker and we don't have an unlimited budget like sugar daddy clubs do. Especially considering we need to strengthen other positions too.

They don't need the funds, but need to show Mbappe that they are ensuring that he gets to play. Whether Bale or Benzema, one has to make way for Mbappe to start, and it is very doubtful they will sit happily, despite the money in the bank. Heck, RM will want the money themselves instead of paying big euros to a bench warmer.
