And while Costa is heading for the Stamford Bridge exit, another of their title winners, Nemanja Matic, is also set to leave with Chelsea ready to sell the Serbia international to Manchester United in a £50million deal.

United are weighing up an improved offer for Matic after a £35million bid was turned down, with Jose Mourinho targeting a reunion with the defensive midfielder.

Here's the article.

I'm no scout, but surely to god there is a player somewhere in the world with similar ability to Dier and Matic that we could sign for less than £50-60 million?? Feck Spurs and feck Chelsea, I wouldn't even consider players from teams like that unless my budget was literally bottomless.

Fabinho over Matic any day of the week, even if the money was not so similar.

6ft 2in (1.88m), 23yo, can play CM/DM/RB, great tackler, has plenty CL experience. What's not to like.

It seems like our scouts have just woken up and realised the only footage they've got is whatever Premier League Years Sky Sports has put on.

Agreed. Although Matic has plenty of CL experience. I really do dislike our focus on Matic and Perisic and have this feint hope that we're also working on deals with CL-level players behind the scenes.

As reported by Duncan Castles, Mourinho doesn't fancy him in midfield but sees him as a potential fullback option, albeit a way down the list of preferences for that position. Perhaps he doesn't think he's disciplined enough.

Haha. Great point! Seriously, I feel like our scouts just go to 5 games a seasono.

Scout: "This guy's pretty good."
Jose: "Eeer, yeah. That's Messi"
Scout: Right, him. Let's go for him. Don't go higher than 40m though.
Jose: "Hey, Ed? Yeah. The scouts are fecking useless. Let's just bid big on some of my old mates.
Ed: "What was that? I can't hear you. I'm in Australia and will be here for the entire transfer window."
Jose:"I SAID BUY MY OLD MATES! Lukaku and Matic will do."
Ed: "Fine, but we only have 150m to spend, - the same as title rivals Everton and Arsenal"
Jose: "But what about Manchester City and Che..
Ed: "The SAME AS TITLE RIVALS EVERTON AND ARSENAL."
Jose: "But what about that list I gave you in April, the one that had Fabinho, and the names of at least 40 other high quality players"
Ed: "I dropped it in the toilet."
Jose: "AGAIN! "Okay...that's fine. I'm earning 20m a season so I'll be fine either way when this goes tits up. Just let me know when we get Lukaku and Matic."

It certainly feels like that.

I'm not normally one for caring about transfer fees, but we're clearly working within some budget parameters (or else we'd surely be in for Neymar?) so spending millions more than a player is worth (particularly when the players in question are not particularly special) seems like a massive waste. I know it's probably not as simple as this, but if we found a defensive midfielder from elsewhere for about the £35 million mark then we'd surely have £15-20 million more to spend on a winger...which takes you to the Sanchez type level of player

From the way Jose is talking to the media about more signings, I think he knows that nobody else is in coming and he has a "told you I needed more players " excuse if we fail to get top 4 . Would love to see matic and a winger added though

That'd be highly ironic. Like saying he doesn't like Peter Crouch because he's not tall enough.
Fabinho was the only disciplined player in that Monaco midfield. Silva, Lemar and Baka were going forward at any given opportunity. He was the only one keeping a semblance of control.

If Mourinho doesn't like him it's his prerogative, no matter how much we disagree, to be fair. It'd be very annoying however if Fabinho is simply 3rd on the list behind Dier and Matic and we waste all summer going for the first 2 options.

That's decent money for a player that isn't very good and never plays.

Fees are ridiculous honestly. How can PL clubs expect to pay fair money for top players when Championship clubs are paying £8m for Liverpool reserves who have done nothing?
