Transfer Tweets - Summer 2017 | Keep it on topic

Carrick has been a good servant and has grown on me, but throughout the years I always felt we could've done better as well, but that's another discussion. And I know you're trying to highlight that sometimes "average" players turn out alright but, personally, I need more than that...Dier is just....

I'm curious to know with what players we could have done better than Carrick? Because I'm incredulous at what you've said.

However, if you really meant that we could have done better in surrounding Michael with better midfielders to protect him and complement his game better, that I can agree with. He's the best English CM of the last decade and if we stretch back further outside Scholes and maybe Gerrard.

Seems like only the The Independent haven't picked up Woodie's call yet.

I'm in favour of this signing. Was on the fence about it, but he's a natural wide player with a good mentality and will provide the sort of service we lacked last season. Not just a workhorse, but will defend from the front. I guess the fee is the only point of contention, if our interest is legit.

I remember when we signed Carrick. Average and nothing special was something people said that time. They obviously don't feel the same anymore. That said, no one knows the future, but I think Dier has something that is worth exploring if we get him.

Carrick was always impressive with his reading of the game and passing off either foot when he was with Spurs. Can't see the same with Dier. I rather play TFM or Axel.

If I was told before the summer we'd spend 180m on Perisic, Dier and Lukaku I would've said fair play, good to see we are continuing the 4 year trend of absurd purchases.

Lukaku & Perisic are still okay by me but Dier? Come on - what exactly does Dier offer to our midfield?

He's a much better tackler than anyone we have in our midfield.

No, I meant exactly what you read. I don't know what i've said that's so unfathomable, Carrick ended up being a good player but its not like he's an all time great, there's been some revisioning regarding carrick's quality, especially on this forum and in the past few years. Dude went from under appreciated in his early years to being grossly overrated, somehow his legend just took an amazing uptake to levels that just aren't true, its a curious case really. @Balu articulated some of my thoughts in a different thread:

Carrick is such an odd case on here. He really went from underrated to overrated on the Caf during the 12/13 season when he was absolutely fantastic in the league. He's clearly a few tiers below United's greatest midfielders and could never handle battles against elite midfielders of other clubs like Keane, Scholes or Robson could. He stood out in 12/13 when the midfields in the Premier League were in general on a truely poor level compared to the past (and probably soon present), but at no point did he excel in the CL or was worthy of a regular starting spot for England (judged on his actual performances for the nationalteam).

He was a great support to the elite players in the team during United's sensational years from 2006 to 2011 and you could often read harsh criticism about his role on here, which then all of a sudden changed when the team around him declined while he still kept his level. Now you can read comments how England failed to build a team around him and stuff like that, which is frankly nonsense. He was never good enough to build a team or a midfield around him if you want to actually challenge for the biggest trophies.

I appreciate the opinion that both of you have, but of course disagree. I have an admitted United bias especially considering nostalgia of some of United's (recent-ish) best football coming with Carrick at the core. I think the difference in our expectation in him and reality is defined by the kind of midfielder you're comparing him to. I never expected him to be a Keane or Robson. A more similar contemporary to gage against might be Xabi Alonso, Kroos or in effect some hybrid of Xavi and Busquets rolled into one. And yet even in his Spurs days he did take games 'by the scruff' including good teams like an Arsenal with Vieira marshaling it.

The swing from under rating to perhaps excessive praise here and elsewhere probably occurred around the time fans stopped viewing Carrick in the shadow of Keane. Helped by winning title after title and Chsmpions League. If anything, not being able to come on top against arguably one of the most successful CM trios in Xavi, Busq and Iniesta is used too heavy handidly as a black mark on Carricks whole career. And that's one of those instances where it was the team and tactics as a whole. I mean, we had Park single handedly take out Pirlo...doesn't make him any less of a player.

Anyway Too long a reply and too much thoughtful discussion between us for the Transfer Tweet thread. Don't want to enrage the muppets! :wenger:

Axel is made for the holding midfielder role. So composed, good vision, pace to burn. He could quickly grow into that role, if given the chance.

We're looking to close out the Perisic deal but still around 10m short of valuation of Inter. How does that work out then?

Ideally? Ideally, we suddenly brief the press that we've agreed a fee with Arsenal for Sanchez and are no longer interested in Perisic. Realistically, we agree a midway point with Inter with some stuff linked of performances etc. and close this out.

It says in the article that Inter are really pissed of with us due to the fact that we kept on lowballing them with offers in hope that they've to accept it due to FFP restrictions. It's funny how alternative options for every other position we're pursuing have been leaked in media for eg Keane for Lindelof, Matic/Bakayoko/Dier for DM, Lukaku/Morata for ST but with LW, apart from Perisic the media doesn't have any clue.

Hoping for Woody magic on this one.

In hindsight we were far too quick to give him 11 and Depay 7.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Big difference between Giggs and Januzaj was that the former was managed by Sir Alex at a relatively settled time for both manager and club. Giggsy himself encouraged Januzaj to take up the number. Talent-wise, it was not that big a difference.

Agree about Memphis though.

Talent wise was a huge difference.

Giggs the most exciting youth we have ever had, and Januzaj .....well.

Luckhurst knows about as much as me = nothing. He's just been guessing for weeks, twisting his words every couple of weeks to fit his current narrative. He really is one of the worst journalists out there at the moment, alongside Delaney who has really been shown up during this transfer period as someone who knows feck all, despite acting the "know it all guy" on Twitter all the fecking time.

I wish people would stop moaning about who we are signing. Just because they want a name for the back of their shirts. If Jose thinks these are the right players then so be it. Stop trying to do his job for him.

his point is he is always there at the start of pre season. Every year hes on the plane with the team when they start the tour. Him not being there is slightly odd. One would figure hes trying to finish up a deal or two

Just sounds like more gossip. Like the turd journalists who said Morata left his honeymoon early etc.

Lol not bieng funny but the big difference is talent not who they were managed by. Giggs was electric when he first come on the scene. Januzaj had 2 good performances and that's it. Giggs would of been great whoever he was managed by.

If there's any truth in that, Chelsea would be mad to turn it down. He's a guaranteed goal machine and adds an extra dimension to their attack with his pace and runs which Costa didn't have.

So we're gonna spend more or less a combined 100m on Dire and Perisic? For that amount we could get most players in the world. They're not better than what we've got. If we do sign them it'll probably kill all my enthusiasm for the upcoming season and not even our shiny new striker would keep us from finishing 6th again.
