Which part dingus? The insane fee, Juve effectively replacing him and still being as good, or him not being good enough to warrant a discussion at 70m?
Worth it for one of the top 2 players in the world in the position. If a club can afford it and it will help then achieve their goals then it's worth it. Wish we showed some initiative and upgraded our Conference level LB's with him.
Probably only Marcelo that's better than Alex Sandro. Even then, Marcelo is a liability defensively at times. Which other LB's are better than Alex Sandro? You can make an argument for Felipe Luis but he's 31 and doesnt have room to get even better like Sandro does.
I have no problem for Sandro price due to the heavy inflation of the prices in the market. Most players are overpriced now that it'll become a trend eventually. Clubs have to cope with this or else they won't be able to bring any top player.

In addition to Marcelo and Luis, cases might be made for Alaba, Guerreiro, Mendy, Emerson.
He's better than all of them bar Marcelo.

Fair enough, that's a point of view. Sandro is very good and I think most people would rightly have him somewhere in the top 5 for the position.
Alex Sandro is very good but one thing is to work in a well drilled unit, another is being asked to do it all by yourself. I am pretty sure Conte will use him wisely, in that sense. As for Juve, no problem, 70m euros are a steal for a LB and they will find someone else for 20-25m, not as good as Sandro for sure but good enough to work in a well drilled unit. We will not make the CL final again next year but any less than QF would surprise me.

I can see someone paying 40m for him in today's market, but at 70m you've just got to walk away. They only signed him for 26m two years ago. Buyers would be better off doing a bit more scouting.
Which says everything about what is crazy in the market. If a foreign club had come in and bid 63m quid for peak Evra - as much as I love that magnificent little man - I'd have endorsed the club selling him, making a huge profit, and finding an excellent replacement.
For great managers, I think only a tiny handful of players in a team, are irreplaceable. For the rest, tactical systems and man management skills sees the rest as fairly interchangeable.
To me, Chelsea look like they need more depth and options for a busy campaign next season. Rather than spending a billion dollars on slightly upgrading their left wing back.
It's been widely reported that we'll be signing 6 new players so we'll address other needs as well. Our new Nike deal kicks in 1 week from today I believe and apparently well start announcing players then. Starting with Bakayko and hopefully Alex Sandro.

Yeah but even with your shiny new Nike deal, you've still got a finite budget. And if you're spunking 120m euros on Sandro and Bikramyoga, you've got to imagine that you've taken a massive chunk out of it, with only marginal improvement to the first xi. Then you've still gotta spend 100m to replace Costa.
But tbh, I don't really follow the nuances of the Chelsea transfer policy, nor am I a football manager; so high probability I'm talking bollocks.
He scored 40 in 46 last season. How many could he have missed?
We shall see. I have a feeling we'll come out of this transfer window with a much improved squad and much more capable starting XI to deal with the CL.

There's a serious flaw in your logic. There's a reason why top players cost so much money. If you'd have sold peak Evra for 63m, what makes you think you'd be able to find an excellent replacement, even for a lot of money? Top players are normally playing for top clubs and are rarely for sale unless they get old/lose form, etc. So at best you'd probably have to replace that world class player with some second tier LB with great potential, hoping can replicate what you've lost by selling a star. And the selling club knowing your situation, he won't come cheap either. Which means you're taking a chance it'll be OK, but what's guaranteed is that you immediately downgrade your first eleven and the buying team improves theirs.
As for fees, yes, they are absolutely ridiculous. But if you have a shot at a top quality player entering his prime years, you should go for it. I'd rather we massively overpay for arguably world's second best leftback than spend the same money on two fullbacks that have just have top class potential because that's what it costs now. (Luke Shaw, anyone?)
If Real Madrid's recent success taught us anything, is that you can never have too many world class players in your squad.

I was not aware of this, but I think it's positive that the Premier League tries to do something about wages. Very unfair for the smaller and newly promoted clubs though, and can't see it bothering us as we'll only get a new official noodle sponsor.

Completely get what you mean. I think Chelski will always have an element of that tbh whilst Abramovich is in charge. I'd like to see how they'd cope without him first before ditching that view of them completely.
To be fair, I'm starting to feel less and less like this about Chelsea and City simply because the entire PL seems like this now. Yes, TV money isn't exactly a sugar daddy, but every team spends loads of money, and it doesn't feel natural to see Bournemouth bid £19m for Nathan Ake either. Newcastle spent £60 odd million in the Championship last summer.
Only buying "top players from top clubs" is not a counterpoint to my "seriously flawed logic" but instead itself indicative of unimaginative and somewhat unsustainable recruitment. Look at our last two brilliant back fours, and where we signed them from:
Brown (academy) Ferdinand (WHU), Vidic (Spartak), Evra (Monaco), VDS (Fulham). Only one signed for big money.
Neville (academy), Stam (PSV), Johnsen (Besiktas), Irwin (Oldham), Schmeichel (Brondby). Again only one for big money at the time.
Even our prospective back 5 for next season:
Valencia (Wigan), Bailly (Villarreal), Lindelof (Benfica), Darmian (Torino) and De Gea (AM). None really signed for what is considered big money today.
So tbh of all those players, maybe only DDG came from a top club, and only Ferdinand and Stam demanding big, big fees for their respective eras.
So yeah, I'd be hugely hesitant to spend 70m on a lb, and would definitely consider selling one for that amount, if I had anything approaching a competent scouting network. Case in point, Luke Shaw/Ryan Bertrand.
Restricting signings to a pool of established top players at top clubs, is an incredibly expensive way to pursue success. Whereas more innovative thinking has proven successful time and time again. There are plenty of top players who have yet to establish themselves at big clubs, but are just awaiting discovery/opportunity.

Just about to post this. Good to see Utd aren't going to be held to ransom for Perisic. Caught a bit of Bernardeschi yesterday in the u21 game and he looks a talented player.
According to whoscored Bernardeschi has played most of his games through the middle?
That's very impressive, I have to say. I guess it's just the games I watched then. Saw a few Dortmund games and watched the Nations Cup where he practically eliminated his country by missing some sitters.

£35m for bakayoko
We look close to selling Ake for £20m and Traore for €20m+ and Begovic was sold for £10m. If we do sell Ake and Traore (which look quite likely) then Bakayoko is paid for off profits from those sales. if we buy Lukaku for say £80m then sell Costa for £40m then we only really spent £40m on one of the best young strikers in Europe and arguably 2nd best striker in the PL.
We still have a kitty of close to £200m to spend on another CB (possibly Van Dijk) and Sandro (if we get him) so that's really nice business with money still left over to strengthen another key area.
