Transfer Tweets - Summer 2017 | Keep it on topic

Just curious why Mourinho chose him over Jones in the EL Final.

He's better than Jones but whichever of the two stays is going to be 4th choice. Jones is much more likely to be happy and settled with that role in the squad (essentially what he was this season). I doubt Smalling is going to accept being so far down the pecking order

I know a lot of people hate on Smalling but he basically never played with Rojo, him and Jones together are both awful. Jones only looked solid next to Rojo. Smalling likewise looked much more comfortable with Blind, a natural left sided CB who wasn't an aggressive style defender.

When Smalling played with Bailly I don't think their styles suited, both are aggressive and like to press and win the ball back quickly. Smalling has always looked class when playing next to Blind, I'm sure he'll do well whenever he goes but frankly he's just not good enough at this level (pretty much like Johnny Evans)

Roma and Nainggolan still unable to reach an agreement on a contract extension.

So we'll be linked to him again, maybe stronger this time, until he gets the contract he wants.

It sort of looks like if Salah goes, Radja will get a contract extension. If not, he may well leave.

One can dream, if we're really not in for Fabinho, but this makes the least amount of sense in terms of the player & selling club. Doubt he's looking to move on, unless he's going for a Big League CL Trifecta, plus doesn't seem RM is looking to upgrade it's Galactico in that position and they already don't want to deal with us due to DDG & Morata.

For me, all eggs for a Carrick/DM replacement is currently on Fabinho. One thing to get an athletic CB to fit, but another to shoehorn a young, relatively unknown DM into our current set-up. Beside Naingollan (not happening) or N'zonzi, the only other scenario I see would be to rely on Herrera as a DM, while rotating Perreira/Mata/Mhki/new transfer at the AM.
Agree with most of what you've said but relying on Herrera as DM would disappoint me, I've no doubt he could do a job for us but I think we should have a Carrick replacement as our main objective in this window. I'm hoping we do go for Fabinho as Kroos is like a pipe dream now as you've pointed out the DDG saga.

All fun and games but I trust Mourinho will make the right choices....

Its a financial issue apparently. Both sides are about a 1m euros apart in terms of wages. We could easily swoop in here and pay him a hell of a lot more than the £50k/wk he's on now.

Which might explain why we're not committing on Fabinho just yet?

Unlikely. Fabinho is a #6, Nainggolan is an #8 and would compete with Herrera/Pogba. It'll be resolved with a new contract for Radja - it looks like Liverpool will be paying for it with their purchase of Salah.

Good, with Roma's deadline to meet FFP by the end of this month happening too we might actually get Salah! What a fricking saga.

Terrible news in my opinion. Top defender, just out of place in this era where centre halves are compared to #10s.
This. We should definitely keep Smalling over Jones. Jones is a total liability with his injury record. Lindelof, Rojo, Bailly, Smalling and then Tuanzebe is a bloody good line-up at CB. Blind is also the modern John O'Shea, utility man. That's genuinely a compliment.

Dont count your chickens just yet, ive watched AS Roma regularly this season and hes Zaha/Shaarawy v2. Iturbe would be better suited to Liverpool lol

Yeah I'm not sold on Salah just yet (though his stats seem to have improved since he settled). Specially not at the price we're eventually going to pay. But I wasn't sold on Mane either for his price so we'll see. One thing we do need is another player with pace and goals (i.e. not another Coutinho, Firmino, Lallana, etc). Klopp seems to get more out of lower tier players then most managers.

If there's any truth in the likes of Everton are looking to spend £150m, then I see no problem in us going for quality players. Woody, revive the muppet in me.

Hopefully this is why we aren't in for Fabinho

We are trying our luck to get him first before moving on to other DM targets

I really hope so. It makes more sense than Fabinho being a back up if United don't get Dier or Matic. I do think the focus should be on a more offensive midfield player now that the Griezmann deal is off.

This doesn't seem a goer to me though. Smells like contract negotiations unfortunately.

You seem to have forgotten (or maybe you are not old enough to remember) that we sold them Ronaldo for 80 million pounds at a time when world class players were going for around 35 million. They paid it, because they needed the player. Neither we nor Madrid are charitable organizations, and they are under no obligation to give us their players at bargain prices. If we don't like the prize they are quoting for their player, we can always refuse to pay it and look elsewhere. No need to call them names.

Kaka went for 55/60m that summer so not sure where you are getting 35 million from, Ronaldo was also a ballon d'or winner in waiting.

Best news this summer, hope we get in excess of £15m for him.

In this current market, if we were to sell Smalling for less than £25m, it'd be a poor deal for us. Given that Stones went for £50m and Keane (who has only 1 year left on his contract) will also reportedly cost £25m, we should really be looking to get closer to £30m. It'd be similar to how we sold Evans for so little, only for him to be linked to a £25m move a year later.

You not taking into account wages though. Smalling moving to any of those teams will probably see him instantly become one of the top earners.

This is often why we get relatively low fees. We effectively have to subsidise what the new club will be paying in wages by taking a lower transfer fee. It's our own fault for paying such high wages in the first place (although sometimes that is obviously necessary).

I'm not too fussed if Smalling goes. We have to be ruthless if we want to be the best again.

Also says in the article that United are confident of reaching an agreement over Morata between 60-70m

Spot on. We seem too keen on keeping a lot of 'good' players. To get to that next level, we have to replace them with 'great' players and that requires some ruthlessness.

Honestly in this market for PL clubs getting any first xi player for 30-40 mill is an absolute steal.

They've got until the same date to get 120m to us for Dave then. Woody don't play that shit.

It's from Marca though, so I will take that report with a large pinch of salt as they are always biased. Anyway, we are still on track in getting our summer business done - it's only 14 June. This time last year, we had only signed Bailly.
