That's part of my original point though. Perisic might be great in big games, allowing us to play a more defensive full back on the left but for the games against dross we need a full back who can provide the width so an inside forward like Martial can flourish.

It's not a coincidence that no matter who has played on that wing this season has been rubbish, we have no support from the left back and don't have a Hazard to compensate for it.

We don't need our left winger to supply our main creativity. Plenty of teams play an asymmetric system where one winger plays more defensive, Fergie used to do it all the time, especially in his 2008 team

If signing Perisic gives us a workhorse on the left then that could allow players like Pogba and Mikhi more freedom and less defensive responsibilities. There's more than one way to create a fluid attacking unit and sometimes signing a disciplined/defensive player allows the rest of the team to flourish

Our defence and midfield are already very good. That's why our defensive record was amongst the best in Europe for a while, and why we went on such a long unbeaten run.

The issue has been the attack. And, more specifically, how the attackers work as a unit. The talent was already there - Zlatan + the best player from the German League + a couple of the most talented youngsters in world football + a player in Mata who's been the most productive midfielder in England over the last few years. There's enough talent there for title winning combination. But, for whatever reason, they don't gel well together.

Sideways moves aren't a bad thing. Bacon, lettuce and tomato work together. Cheese, peanut butter and chilli peppers don't.
Leave me out of this!

Fabinho the only one that excites me, name-wise. The rest could be underestimated but hopefully can help us become more than the sum of our parts.

Ah yeah, sorry I get a few alerts. On paper, Ronaldo has mainly been LF under Zidane, with Benzema as the ST but Ronaldo moves around. Got no idea how they intend to use Mbappe, but with Ronaldo as his idol maybe they do see him as the long term option. I think it'd be better to have Mbappe in Benzema's position but Zidane really likes Benzema.

Cheers. I'm hopping Ronaldo will see it as an insult and come back to us

Confirmed, Andre silva at milanello tomorrow medicals with @acMilan

Holy shit, that escalated quickly, I think that's a great move for all parties. Will be very interesting watching him next season, I like him a lot.

People seem adamant that Fabinho, Lindelof, Morata and Perisic would be a good window but i don't think that's true.

Morata - sideways move from Ibra at best

Lindelof - sideways move from Rojo at best

Perisic - sidewys move from a Martial, Mkhi or Mata at best. The man has a conversion rate of around 10%!

Fabinho - massive improvement on Carrick

That's only 1 position improved from last season imo, is that really good enough to go from 6th to title challengers? Where are the 30 goals we were lacking last season gonna come from? I know injuries have put a lot of pressure on us to have a big window but i can't help but think on top of these we will need a world class left back and proven goal scoring winger if we want to think about competing for the top prizes.
Morata. Maybe he is a sideways move from Zlat. But considering who he is and the season he's just had for us, sideways might be the best we can manage with who is available.

Lindelof. I think you're comparing him to the wrong person. He should be an improvement on Smalling and Jones. Also, I think a lot of us were surprised with how good a season Rojo had. Hope he returns in similar form.

Perisic. He's quite a polarizing topic. I think he'd be great for us.

Fabinho. I don't think we have a CM like him at present.

Thought Alonso did well for them last season too.

Surely a replacement for Moses on the other side would be more beneficial.

Moses was much, much, much better than Alonso last year. In fact, Moses was one of Chelsea's most improved players last season and a great asset to that right flank.

Back to the bid for Sandro though - £52m :wenger: Can't believe that much though - surely Mendy would slot into that sort of role better and is rumoured to be the same value?

Probably people playing FM - he's listed as a winger on there. He is a striker but guess with some of his goals coming from a wide position, some people think he's a winger rather than a striker who moves around.
this makes a lot of sense now

You made the claim. Who was played out of position for us?

Valencia playing RB, Darmian played LB/LWB/CB, Rojo played RB, Jones played DMF, Tuanzebe played DMF/CMF, Pogba played DMF, Herrera played DMF, Young played RB/LB/RWB/LWB, Fellaini played DMF/CMF/SS, Rashford played LW/RW, Martial played RW/LW, Miki played RW/RWB/RB/LW/LWB, Mata played RW/CMF, Rooney played RW/LW/CMF...

So if we mention PSG with Wayne we will make a killing?
Literally got nothing to do with what I said. We bid for Perisic and value him at a price. They want more because they need to make some money. Pretty easy to throw a name out in the press to try and drive the price. Considering no one has bid for Rooney don't really get the comparison

If we let Juve just take Douglas Costa without challenging them that is poor imo, especially for the prices being reported. Also disappointed to see James is probably going elsewhere. He would have improved our team for sure.

At youth level he was an inside forward but at professional level he is definitely a striker.

Well, Zidane said if the squad stayed the same it would be Bale making way. With Morata and James leaving he would be Benzema's sub for now.

Long term I think it's obvious he is regarded as Cristiano's replacement.

Nothing to do with the manager. Ultimately, the manager will sign who he signs regardless of what any of us discuss, of course.

That said, we are basically telling football watchers to think a player is good because someone else does. Which again, is ridiculous.

Nobody would have a problem with a poster not rating Perisič if United were not linked with him. He's not some generally accepted top player.

Personally, I am indifferent about us signing him, it's this notion that I thought was wrong, is all.
I get your point. Problem is the unsubstantiated negativity. If people made a case fair enough, but it comes across as "don't want because he isn't shiny enough".

Sure, flavours aren't to be discussed but when you're parking the bus against the likes of Celta, Anderlecht and Ajax, it begs the question.

Are you 12? His Porto side was as negative as his Chelsea side, if not worst. He racked up 100 goals with Madrid back when it was a 2 team league.

If you don't like it, don't read it idc.

Yeah you keep ignoring and keep twisting my words the way it suits you, utterly pointless to talk any further.

Actually his Porto side was pretty exciting. His midfield led by the brilliant Deco and his attack led by Derlei, were fabulous. It was during his champions league winning season that he went all pragmatic (defined as boring) especially in the CL competition and that ultimately won him the title.

His first Chelsea side was also great to watch not in a Barcelona tiki taka way but in a way that conveyed methodical preparations and ruthless efficiency. The forward line was quick and deadly. Who didn't want to watch Drogba combine with Arjen Robben, Damien Duff, Joe Cole, Gudjohenssen and Hernan Crespo?

And of course, two horse race or not, that title winning Madrid team was far from boring. They were arguably the best counter attacking side in the last decade or two. Higuain/Benzema, Cristiano and Di Maria were fed by Ozil and Alonso. They scored for fun.

I think Mourinho playing boring football is a myth. He seems to tweak his play to fit the opponent at hand. What is probably indisputable is that he tends to play very conservatively and mostly defensively against the big teams and his games against the big teams are often the most watched and defining games during a season. Perhaps this is why the 'boring' tag has been hung on him.

Sky saying Joel Pereira is linked with a move to Man United :wenger: Being linked with our own players now
