When all's said and done the onus was on Real, not us: they wanted a player who we were reluctant to sell; it was up to them to get things sorted, ages ago.

The point Real are making is that United are the ones who contacted Real yesterday morning. Presumably they themselves (Real) were prepared to let events take their course. But United delayed so long in opening negotiations that insufficient time was left to complete a complex deal.

We'll have to await United's response. If we make one.

Why would he bother coming back here if he's a big success at Dortmund, they'll have given him the time to succeed, so maybe he'll see them as a better place to ply his trade.

Madrid took 2 hours to send contracts signed by Navas and DDG to United.

That doesn't work though, the honus isn't on us to do anything at all. He's our player and there was a clear asking price. They can't blame us for delaying when they've had the whole summer but left it till the last 24 hours to make an acceptable offer. They're making out as if they bid whatever it was £29m and Navas 2 months ago but we responded saying we accepted yesterday morning. That's obviously not what happened, we entered negotiations yesterday morning because that's when Real finally made an acceptable offer, they have only themselves to blame.

Probably because he's contracted here.

I imagine it will be pretty simple, we have contacted them to say it's the last day of their transfer window to buy, do they want him...they have sorted an agreement, we sorted out paperwork and they got to last minute and decided they can just get him free next season anyway...and didn't bother submitting. But in Real Madrid style they don't want to make themselves look bad, so they pass the blame.

New contract or reserve for a year. United should issue an ultimatum IMO.
Not sure how that would go down. If he does opt for the reserves we're playing Romero in net for the season...

If it turns out it was not ours but Real Madrid's incompetence then he has to consider it, they should have put in this offer earlier in the window, he should be going with Spain to the Euros.

What happens in January? They sign him on a free for the end of the season but he still won't have played enough to be the starting choice for Spain. If I were him I'd sign a contract with a £40m release clause.

DDG being offered a new deal doesn't mean he will sign it. I fully expect us to try and convince him to sign a new one and leave next year.

I can see it if he gets a pay rise and there's a reasonable buyout clause, but I doubt he will sign it. DDG already turned down contract offers from us.

Can't for the life of me see a player who was literally seconds away from leaving us signing a new deal, just doesn't make sense.

Didn't Suarez sign a new deal after Liverpool broke contract law to reject an Arsenal bid?

It isn't that hard if you think about it. With the way players jump ship overnight for money. Nothing surprises me about modern day football deals and transfers.
