Shame of it is, the price they were supposedly offering was fantastic.

And therefore very unrealistic. RvP is on huge wages with only a year left, Lazio aren't that rich that they can offer 15m Pound and offer him good wages. If he leaves we probably won't get much for him because of this, since he's not likely to join another top club at his age.

Aye, I was expecting him to leave for next to nothing anyway. If we are getting rid of a player like RVP then the wages freed are the big benefit.

Calciomercato have posted a photo of Van Persie in Rome. Apparently he's there, most probably on holiday, but will fuel the rumours even further despite Lotito's denial.

Soooo Cabaye being linked with Palace. Who would have thought that he isn't a top player, eh. Remember the summer of 2013 when he was a Caf darling and everyone wanted him. Glad we dodged that one.

It was actually pretty devided. One half had him as in the cusp of world class, the other thought he was no more than mid level quality. We all knew though that he would rot on PSG's bench

Was thinking the same.

He is a good player.

Cleverley was a first team regular then, a player didn't need to be special to be an upgrade.

If we had signed Cabaye then we'd just be looking to upgrade him too now. He was an upgrade on Cleverley but so were an awful lot of other players, he would have been a relatively pointless signing.

Cabaye would be a brilliant signing for Palace.

You have to start somewhere though when you're building a squad. He would have been a decent, if not earth shattering, start.

Seriously though, Tom Cleverley was one of our first choice midfielders...

Not many thought he was a top player. He was an obvious upgrade on the likes of Clev, Ando and Giggsy who were our CMs alongside Carrick. He was meant to be a stop gap will we could get the next level of CMs. He can do much better than Palace btw.

Aston Villa are interested in Paul Pogba's brother - Florentin, who's 24 and plays as a CB for Saint-Etienne. Is he any good?

Someone like Herrera was a better option, as were a load of other players who might have been available back then. I don't anyone thought he wouldn't be an upgrade on Cleverley, just that this wasn't enough of a reason to choose Cabaye over everyone else.

Aye, back then anyone looked liked a good midfielder to our fans as we badly lacked in that department. He would have been an average signing to displace another average player, not the right way to go.

He was very overrated on here for a long while, have a gander at his thread. I think signing him would have been a pointless stop gap. Aye, he can do better then Palace alright.

We had Clev, Ando and Giggsy. How could it be pointless? We didn't tend to be ruthless with our sales though under Sir Alex or Moyes so it'd have been left to Van Gaal to shift him out this year.

It didn't seem very likely back then that we'd spend thirty million on a spanish midfielder. It didn't seem likely we'd sign a midfielder at all really.

I think it was more of a 'take what we can get' thing than choosing him over anyone else. People would have still preferred Vidal or the like, it just didn't seem plausible.

Even worse, I remember 2012, when everyone though Tiote would be the perfect player for our midfield. *shudder*

Marca: Pogba tops Barcelona's wish list. Apparently Raiola and Braida met in Berlin today.

It would have been pointless as he went for a fair whack in the end and would have been a minimal upgrade. Our transfer policy in Fergies latter years was shambolic and that's why we were left with dross like Ando. Signing an average, over-priced centre mid was hardly the right way to go about things.

Says he was close to renewing before United showed interest.

That whole Newcastle team was wildly overrated around here.

Very true. Speaking of which, whatever happened to Hatem Ben Arfa? I remember there being a lot of wailing and teeth gnashing when we didn't sign him. Coulnt even tell you who he plays for now

He went for 20mil. Not really exorbitant. You can always sell players like him for 10mil or so. Sir Alex's last few years in terms of transfers were poor but it was also about who we "didnt" sign. We could have done better than Cabaye obviously but getting him for 20mil for a couple of years and then selling him off for 10mil wouldnt be bad business. Would have made us a better team.

He is really only a slight upgrade on what we had back then and plenty on here also knew he wasn't cut out for a top club. Spending £20m for a slight upgrade isn't good business in my eyes. Anyhow, our transfer policy back then is a debate that could go on all day. My original point about him being completely overrated on here, stands. Yes, obviously not everyone overrated him, but plenty did. His thread is testament to that. But as I alluded to, that whole Newcastle team was very overrated and the messiah Graham Carr even got his own thread on here.

Nobody, tried to sign for nice in jan but fifa wouldn't let him play because he had already played for hull and newcastle in the same season, there was talk of him retiring but i think he's still looking for a team for next season.

Had his loan terminated at Hull, got released by Newcastle and then was set to join Nice but the transfer fell through as he couldn't play for 3 clubs in one season. Not sure what is happening with him now.

Free agent - can't be too many 28 year old with french caps not at a club.

He'll play for Nice next season, their president confirmed it.

I think his shit attitude took his Newcastle career & Hull loan to a premature end. He just quit trying.

I remember Bruce taking him off at Old Trafford in the first half when he just refused to run
