Nah I don't think Ducker would use the words 'United still adamant' if he got it from another source. He got that from someone at United.

They are in the business of drawing in viewers to their web sites, so it wouldn't surprise me.

Given he has a release clause and there's little Barca can do if we pay up, you get the feeling that we're slowing any progression down.

If we really wanted him, we'd have bought him by now (although I said exactly this about Schneiderlin and we bought him that same day).

The release clause is slightly overplayed. This is an agreement that Pedro has with the board rather than a contractual clause. Utd will also want to ensure relations are kept positive with Barca rather than strong arm them via the clause.

Well he didn't link an article. Also, he's not the first to say this. All British papers broke the whole 'No Ramos, no new CB' story in unison pretty much. Which usually means a briefing. All in all, it's not what he's 'thinking', it's what he's been told but his comment 'that things can change' clearly shows he's skeptical of the info he's been given.

It actually doesn't mean a briefing. It could all just be groupthink journo BS. One journo gets it in his head or infers it from a conversation he had with someone at the club, the information is then circulated privately among journos, and several of them run with it. It could be true, it could also be completely invented. We have to stop believing what journos say as gospel and start being a bit more dubious of their content.

Agree that we can't believe everything a journo says but I've found it's pretty clear where they've been briefed and where it's just BS or herd mentality. That much is clear for me at least. I just don't think that tweet is his personal thoughts nor thoughts he got from someone that's not connected to United.

It's abundantly clear when there is a briefing. As for them getting together and pushing the same story - not likely at all.

Nobody believes what journalists say as gospel. If anything people, and I think your recent posts are an example of that, have become overly skeptical, refusing to believe that a journalist could ever have any real sources or solid info.

I actually don't particularly rate Cahill, Terry next to him makes him look much better. I think Zouma will definitely become much, and probably is, better than Cahill, purely as he is a monster physically. Terry can go on for a few seasons though the way he plays. Probably the best CB we've ever seen in the last decade.

Back to us though, I think we forget that Jones is 23, (24 in Feb). He's been playing ahead of his years for a while, so whilst you'd hope the growth trend would continue, maybe it was slightly inevitable he'd have a wobbly season as we transitioned. I'm giving him one more season, but I think he has it in him to become the other CB with Smalling. I don't think it would be beneficial to anyone, bringing in anyone lower than the calibre of Ramos. Plus I am a bit of a Rojo fanboy :D.

Terry is quality but Rio wipes the floor with him.

I'm sure they do, but at the same time, it's worth remembering they are in the business of drawing in readers to their websites. What Ducker said, whether he got it from a legit source or is just inferring it based on deductive logic, could've been said to any number of teams or scenarios (Arsenal aren't buying a striker, City aren't buying a midfielder, United aren't buying a defender etc). As we saw with the pressers on the US tour, the journos are generally clueless as to what is going on. They are at most making educated guesses to remain relevant.

The amount of people telling me United are going to sign someone referring to some half baked story in the Sun or Express does my head in.

We're in the unfortunate position that a *lot* of people do take newspaper f*ckery as gospel, and it's NUTS!

I absolutely agree with bolded part. We bought Rojo last season who was the best of the available ones and our best CB's are still Jones and Smalling and we are again in the same position as last season. It would be no good if we again spend stupid money on player who will not be as better than the players we already have.

And i agree with underlined port to. Many are discussing Jones like he is on finished product and his age is on the wrong side of 30's. He is youngster who have to learn like everyone. He is still one of the most promising defenders. I still think if he will have relatively injury free season he will show that he can be up with the best defenders around. And i believe this injury free season is right around the corner.

No. Just no. Jones has defended well most times he played.

Who do you want to buy? Otamendi for £35m? Clearly they aren't convinced about him at that price. Stones maybe but Chelsea is in it too. There isn't a lot of players we should be going for

I would pay the money on Stones knowing that he can offer 2 things Jones will never have: improving composure and solid ball-playing ability. I don't care what it takes, but I wouldn't mind United doing with Stones what was done to get Luke Shaw on board at all costs.

Yes very naive from a coach in his 60s thats won it all :wenger:
I understand they only want to bring in a player (Ramos) thats better then what we already have. However, going by the last few years we know that defence will have a major breakdown and we'll play Carrick and/or Blind there. And thats hardly ideal.

If DDG, Valdes and Lindegaard are leaving, we must be looking to bring in another GK or has Sam Johnstone done enough to impress LvG on tour to be our #2 this season behind Romero

Jones, Smalling, Rojo, McNair, Blackett, Blind, Evans. Not to mention 2 top class CMs to help improve our midfield. A lot of people forget a weak central midfield hinders a defense greatly.

As well as CBs who have issues staying fit. Please lets not talk about Blackett too, he can't play CB well enough for us yet.

I get why and partly agree. We want to improve in defence and not buy just for the sake of it but surely our injury record is a cause for concern? I also wouldn't be comfortable with Evans and not convinced by Blackett.

That would be suicidal of Van Gaal to let all 3 of them go and bring in nobody else. Beyond stupidity.

Numbers don't mean quality. We had the all of them last season and were still struggling, with our GK regularly saving their asses.

Anyway,

Blackett - terrible.
Blind - Not a CB
McNair - Probably will be loaned out.
Rojo - Looked awful last season.
Smalling, Jones, Evans - all injury prone.

How long before we are looking for two warm bodies to field in central defense? It has happened before, and will happen again.

If we do look to ship him out after next season, at least we might get a bit more for him.

I'm happy for him, he deserves it, even if it highlights more how poor we've been in that area that he's getting such praise.
