With that lousy and consistently injured man-beast we have in the side, it's almost laughable to call that defensive line as something good enough to challenge for top honours. Even Mikaël Silvestre looked a lot better than Jones, and yet we all remember all the things we said about Silvestre.

Like others wrote before me, we need a settled back 4. But for that, we need players who are not as often injured as the ones we have. The sooner we get someone who would allow us to scratch Jones out of the main equation, the better everyone will feel.

I think this is unfair to say, he's anything but lousy. Jones flaws were evident mainly because we are playing a system that demands more then defending from the CB's.

All jones needs is the brain and he's easily one of the best, kinda sad actually.

Numbers don't mean quality. We had the all of them last season and were still struggling, with our GK regularly saving their asses.

Anyway,

Blackett - terrible.
Blind - Not a CB
McNair - Probably will be loaned out.
Rojo - Looked awful last season.
Smalling, Jones, Evans - all injury prone.

How long before we are looking for two warm bodies to field in central defense? It has happened before, and will happen again.

Complete and utter horseshit. You are the type of poster that wouldnt give a player a chance anyway so whats the point. If you think Rojo looked awful last season (his first season in a new country/league) then I dunno what to tell you.

Plus you are forgetting a weak CM.

And injuries

but you know patience is a virtue and all that

Evans hasn't filled me with confidence lately, but as a fourth choice defender (providing he's happy being backup), I wouldn't mind him staying.

Local lad from the academy and we've previously seen how good he can be. An injury free period where he can get his confidence up would do him wonders.

He was one of our best players last season :wenger:

But we still need to see an upgrade above him on the left flank (Memphis?) in order to challenge top honours and he already hit age 30.

edit: nothing against his signing, but I think LVG would stretch it a little too far if he is our main man on the left flank.

What's horseshit? Aren't the players I mentioned injury prone? Haven't we seen them all injured at the same time before?

Would any top team in their right minds trust Blackett and McNair to start in CB?

Rojo was not very good and looked awfully bad in a number of games last season.

And don't worry about what kind of poster I am. If you can't be respectful or reply like a normal human being, then don't bother quoting my posts again. I am not some kid you can bully around here.

Yep. Evans should be sold and a new cb should be brought it.

It's fair to argue that otamedi isn't worth 35mil, or that united shouldn't move for a CB unless they are in the same league as ramos. However, to then go a step forward and say what we have is good enough to win trophies? I'd be lying to myself.

Quit your yapping you reactionary little...who is expecting Blackett and McNair to start in CB?

Would have thought it was self explanatory mate. Swaps are often a fans answer to most transfer issues but they rarely ever happen. You feelin alright?

It's not you - it's me ;). Have a tooth ache man - pretty shitty one too.

I agree with your point about swaps - but only regarding English football though. Swaps / trades, as part of a deal to obtain a player from another club, occur quite regularly in the rest of Europe, but much has to be said that these players are most likely forced to move to a certain club & the present club couldnt give a shite about the players welfare.

Sorry about that post Rams . How you been keeping feller - all good i hope?

Yeah Im good lad, you want a quick tap on the jaw? :P

That we reward good performance? Yea ok.

I bet you bemoan a lack of 'loyalty' from players, too.

I'm far from Youngs biggest fan, but he deserves the new deal.

Pretty much this. What motivation would it be for Young, or any player for that matter not being offered a new contract on the back of an excellent season?

You ask what @Ramshock claimed was horseshit, then begin to list what you said, but it wasn't actually what you said. What you said was

Blackett - terrible.
Blind - Not a CB
McNair - Probably will be loaned out.
Rojo - Looked awful last season

Most of that is horseshit, that's to put it politely.

One of our best players last season getting rewarded with a new contract - how pathetic

If I can jump in the conversation, I understand quite well what he's saying. He's not saying that the club shouldn't have resigned him. With his performances last year, he deserves to be at the club.

What his annoying (depressing for him), is that our club, should line up players like Ronaldo, Bale, Messi, Neymar, Hazard, Sanchez (Di Maria) rather than soldiers like Ashley Young.

Young was just better than almost all of our players last year, the same goes for Fellaini. It means that our level is not high enough if he's the best player of the squad, and that can be quite alarming that an average + player is the best player of what is supposed to be the best club in the world.

But LVG said the same about him not being Neymar or Hazard. You need the likes of Young in your team, a player being 100% behind the philosophy, delivering when is needed, but in the games against Chelsea and Arsenal last year he wasn't the man who unlocked the things unlike Hazard.

Every Manchester United player should be able to make a contribution during a big game especially. And when your best player is not able to win you games alone, it means that your team is not good enough and you can't lead it (I can tell exactly the same about Wayne)

I would be glad to have him as a squad player and a very good squad player rather than seeing and dreaming about him winning a game against Barca, Madrid or Munich.

I am not being reactionary, we have had trouble with our defense, and it has been evident since Fergie's last season. Moyes decided to ignore the area and paid a pretty heavy price. Then VG came in and only strengthened with a player, I know you don't agree, who is not a very good CB. He himself said he bought him on back of a world cup game and some videos. We struggled with Smalling, Jones and Evans injury problems and had to play two kids, who didn't look very comfortable in the position. Both of them have a lot to learn before they can be starting, or even options for a team with title ambitions.

I think De Gea being our player of the year for two years running tells as much about our defensive struggles as it does about his quality as a keeper. IMO, it would be suicidal to go into the new season without strengthening the area.

I agree with your previous point, that better CM's should mean a little more protection for the defense. Though, defenders still have a job to do; there are a lot of mistakes in Jones and Rojo that would come back to bite us in the ass.

Blackett isn't even good enough to be back up, whenever he comes on we just get raped down the left side. Sometimes i see he has a little composure on the ball but just not good enough for a 21 year old, especially when looking at how shaw & mcnair are progressing. The arsenal matches were the worst for me.

Mcnair has a future here though, I wouldn't mind him as cover. Really liking his forward runs this pre season.

It's happening again...let's put the handbags away and focus on tweets please.

I agree with much of what you said - especially in the sense that Young is a solider rather than a star - but sometimes you just need these type of players (like Park) that is willing to work 110% rather than the likes of Nani and Di Maria, who are probably twice as talented as him, but just could not give a shit. From memory, while it was a team effort rather than a solo effort, Young was fabulous against City.

The last time we relied on one player was RVP - and at times the football played was awful. (I'm not saying you want us to sign a star so we rely on him)

Even when we had Ronaldo, it was a team effort rather than just relying on his individual brilliance, but yes, there were games that Ronaldo won for us so I do understand the need for that type of player - but it's not to say Young can't play a part if a player of such quality is brought in.

Personally feel we need a world class CB no matter what. Maybe some people don't think its needed, but I believe young players need to be training with a world class talent. Jones and Smalling have the potential to be great players, and could be our CB pairing for 7-8 years. But they are both still very raw. If Vidic/Rio had stayed I wouldn't have had a problem, but currently who do our young CB's have to look upto.....Evans?....Laughable.

Game time and listening to decent coaches is great but having a world class experienced player in front of you to watch and imitate cant be replicated. 50/60 year old coaches might be able to tell you all sorts, but they aren't going to don their boots, throw the likes of Rooney, Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin out of the way and put their head perfectly timed through a ball like Vidic might, or time a standing tackle perfectly on someone like Memphis as he's barrelling at them.

As for options, I really don't get some of the comments in here. People are quite happy to have 7/8+ Attacking Midfielders and still apparently be looking for "creative" players to buy, but are happy with 3 first team worthy CB's (Smalling, Jones, Rojo), 2 of whom have been quite prone to injury. Aside from that, Evans couldn't head a clearance or adequately judge the flight of a ball to save his life. McNair is too young even if he has put in a few good performances, And Carrick and Blind are not Centre backs and will be exposed when played there.

And to pile more pressure on, we could be going into the season with a CB pairing that hasn't really played together consistently, a left back who didn't play much last season, a newly bought, young right back who hasn't played in the prem before, and possibly a brand new keeper, not the Keeper who's been our best player by a country mile for the last 2 seasons and is probably the sole reason we are back in the Champions league, and able to attract some of the players we have bought or are looking at.

Also hold reservations over Ashley Young's new contract. Maybe he'll retain his good form, or maybe he'll revert to type after a new contract and be absolute dog shite until its time to get another deal, at which time he pull's a very decent season out of his arse. Done it his whole career. Hopefully he's not on higher wages, and preferably took a pay-cut.

It would be great for both players I think as neither would have any personal upheaval. Sadly Stones not being left footed may well cost us this one.

I think Evans would do well with the lesser pressure of playing for Everton.

I dont think i need to reiterate my full feelings on this whole left-footed CB shite - it does my head in, on every level Dev.

Can you imagine if Fergie had of retired in 2007 or sooner, & LvG took over. He wouldnt have paired Rio & Vida, going by his present CB "philosophy".

Picking a lesser quality player at CB - based soley on his preferred foot, is the stuff of plot-losing. I cant think of one world-class left-footed CB around now tbh, but Laporte is on the cusp of being one. Maldini is the only one i can think of, that stands out in history (of course there's many more, but i'm struggling to think of any of them) - but he was predominantly a LB all his career too..

What's this fascination with horseshit?

My two cents. We need a CB. We been waiting four years for Jones and Smalling to stay fit for entire season and has not happened. I don't think Blind is a CB. He's best attribute is passing. He's not aggressive, not great in in the air, he isn't the quickest and not the strongest either.

Stones, Ramos or Otamendi. I don't really care who.

I with you on this mate, I'd throw in Laporte and I'm sure there are a few others out there too like Abdennour that could help us.
I'm hoping Jones can suprise me this season, but I'm not holding my breathe

This would be suicidal, surely Ramos is not the only CB that could improve our defense when Blind and Jones are being used as actual viable starters.

It's madness man, it's one thing if you can simply have the pick of the litter then sure, go batshit with your preferences, but to actually take it to the point of playing Daley Blind as a CB in the PL is just lunacy.

We'd have missed out on one of the best CB partnerships ever, and in truth until LvG came I had never given a thought to which was the main foot of our CB's. Last season Barca won a treble with 2 right footed CB's and Chelsea won the PL, that is evidence enough that it's irrelevant micro managing.

the only problem with laporte is that we may have left it a bit late in the window to start dealing with A.bilbao, especially if they don't want to sell.

We all know how cnutish they can be over transfers, we may end up forking out otamedi type money.
