Although our defence was all over the place at times last season. A lot of that was down to an unsettled back 4 and a unconventional midfield. If our players can stay fit and LVG gets it right our defence is more than capable. There's is no need to buy for the sake of buying either a world class defender is the order or a gamble on an up coming (although this is not what we need right now)

Yep I dont think it helped that our midfield was regularly left for dead in counter attacks. CM should be the first line of defence and if they can't snuff out an attack they should at least slow it down somewhat and allow the defence to get their shape. Instead we had strikers constantly breaking from midfield and a central defender and probably a fullback chasing them.

Spot on I think if we get a creative player in and Rooney stays fit we won't be far away and have a genuine shout of winning the title back.

Yep, it was already the case under SAF, the midfield not providing any support against fast attacking play.

What a flashback.

Some people are really starting to sound like arsenal fans during their trophy drought. Smalling is the only quality CB we have, even then that's debatable to some even though he has definitely improved.

Jones it's just the same story it's been when seen over the last two seasons. Has the steel, build and the pace to be a great CB but is just so error prone, sometimes rash and one dodgy backpass away from losing possession in dangerous areas. Saw way too much of the above last year to maintain faith that he's good enough to start for utd

Mcnair has shown good promise at CB, also starting to look confident with the ball at his feet, even more so than jones.

Evans has to go now, just not good enough, not even for back up.

Rojo i'm still unsure about, hopefully gets more game time.

Now compare our CB's with the opposition in the prem and over europe, we're so easily behind them.

Pretty much this, we need to strengthen our selection at CB if we want to compete with the best, end of.

Whilst I agree with your point about Jones and Smalling being our top CB isn't ideal, I can only think of Chelsea's back 4 (even that is only because of Terry holding it all together and Ivanovic) that are particularly studded with good CBs.

Arsenal and City don't have much better, if at all and they're our main competition aside from Chels.

Defences are all about a unit, it's not about individuals. See Southampton and Atletico for prime examples of great defensive unity paying off. ACROSS the back four. With whats almost two new full backs with Shaw looking fit enough to play, we'll be a lot more solid.

CB wasn't an issue?

Constant chopping and changing due to another season of injuries there. That alone is a reason to buy. A settled pairing is important.

We were giving away too many easy chances last season, to some bang average sides as well. I could write on the back of a postage stamp the amount of times I felt comfortable we'd hold onto a lead.

A CB must be brought in. The CB's are hardly difficult to replace here, they're pretty average.

So good job we have the 2 guys whose names I can't spell then.

Absolutely. Midfield will help take the pressure off the defence, however, still think we need a centre half - largely because i do not believe Jones to be good enough, nor will he stay fit.

There was a period last season where we were frankly quite unlucky. I think West Brom away comes to mind, where they seemed to just score with their only chances. We wouldn't give up too many opportunities, but when we did, we were punished.

He's 31 but should still have 2 years left, excellent player in his prime and at this price it's a no-brainer really. Good replacement for Cambiasso.

With three days left and nothing concrete on the Pedro deal, you get the feeling he isn't our first choice.

It's not naive, at least not more naive than thinking that you improve a defense by purchasing a defender. From what I see our defenders are individually good but collectively average, the solution for us isn't on the market but on the training ground and we won't find that solution with LVG.

With that lousy and consistently injured man-beast we have in the side, it's almost laughable to call that defensive line as something good enough to challenge for top honours. Even Mikaël Silvestre looked a lot better than Jones, and yet we all remember all the things we said about Silvestre.

Like others wrote before me, we need a settled back 4. But for that, we need players who are not as often injured as the ones we have. The sooner we get someone who would allow us to scratch Jones out of the main equation, the better everyone will feel.

The durability is a problem, that's true.

Yep agree with you Lash Chelsea have Terry and Cahill and two solid full backs but I wouldn't swap our full backs for any in the league and Smalling is going to become number 1 in England. It's the left side centre back we need sorted out but with our midfield more balanced and much stronger I can see either one of Jones Evans or Rojo being enough. As for Chelsea Terry won't last much longer and they will need to buy big and probably still not fill the hole he will vacate.

No. Just no. Jones has defended well most times he played.

Who do you want to buy? Otamendi for £35m? Clearly they aren't convinced about him at that price. Stones maybe but Chelsea is in it too. There isn't a lot of players we should be going for

What Ducker thinks United will do and what United do are two different things.

Tbf he's not thinking it, he's been told that by someone at United. Like he says 'things change' but that's United's current stance they're communicating.

In this case I think it's more to do with Barca wanting to keep him for the next 2 games rather than us procrastinating

Given he has a release clause and there's little Barca can do if we pay up, you get the feeling that we're slowing any progression down.

If we really wanted him, we'd have bought him by now (although I said exactly this about Schneiderlin and we bought him that same day).

We don't know that do we ? He could've inferred it through something another journo told him.

I actually don't particularly rate Cahill, Terry next to him makes him look much better. I think Zouma will definitely become much, and probably is, better than Cahill, purely as he is a monster physically. Terry can go on for a few seasons though the way he plays. Probably the best CB we've ever seen in the last decade.

Back to us though, I think we forget that Jones is 23, (24 in Feb). He's been playing ahead of his years for a while, so whilst you'd hope the growth trend would continue, maybe it was slightly inevitable he'd have a wobbly season as we transitioned. I'm giving him one more season, but I think he has it in him to become the other CB with Smalling. I don't think it would be beneficial to anyone, bringing in anyone lower than the calibre of Ramos. Plus I am a bit of a Rojo fanboy :D.

Nah I don't think Ducker would use the words 'United still adamant' if he got it from another source. He got that from someone at United.
