Whatever way you spin it, its a disappointing team to be starting the season with. And no, I wouldn't complain regardless, there's plenty of permutations from the available squad that I would be very happy with.

And fwiw Memphis didn't play centrally last season, he played from the left.

Memphis scored 22 goals in 30 games from the left? I didn't realise he was that good, even more reason to try him out as the support striker if he fits the manager's profile, he is a goal machine if he did that from the left flank.

It's not Louis' fault Rojo isn't ready yet or Angel di Maria, blame the international tournaments. Signing a player can take time therefore it is not uncommon for player or two to be signed in August, it's not Louis' fault Schweinsteiger is injured.

Out of that team I think De Gea, Shaw, Jones, Darmian, Carrick, Schneiderlin, Young, Depay, Mata and Rooney are fine, the only player you can have a problem with is the lack of Smalling for Blind however it is understandable his reasoning for playing Blind especially if he wants him as a centre back.

The team isn't really disappointing, it's at least as good as the team that beat Spurs 3-0, in that match De Gea, Jones, Blind, Carrick, Mata, Young and Rooney played, this team has Darmian, Shaw, Schneiderlin and Depay instead of Valencia, Smalling, Herrera, Fellaini.

i agree with the majority of your post apart from this one. Biggest changes last season were all spurred on via injury.
Lvg persists with things that don't work for extended periods of time before he switches up. He tests things thoroughly, whether or not that is a quality you like in a manager is up for the fans to decide because it has worked before.

I could see depay as a no.10 and blind as a cb right up until xmas, even if it means herrera stays out of the side, mata is pushed wide and even if it looks like we have better options for each role, he'll have a reason for it and that reason will stand, regardless of results.

That's just the type of manager he is. Pragmatic through and through.

As an example he didn't persist with Angel di Maria in the striker position or Rooney as the central midfielder or the 3-5-2, he will not persist with 4-2-3-1 if it isn't producing the results, that is to say above all else he wants to win (at the very least to keep his job).

As you say 'he tests things thoroughly', the way I would put it is that he doesn't see a few games as a big enough sample size, he is willing to give time to something because in theory it sounded good but if in practice after he feels he has enough data he will abandon it, I don't see anything wrong him deciding on a system that he feels will be the most effective for us this season and then giving it time to succeed, as I mentioned in my previous post if it doesn't work out for him then he will change it, I didn't say he will change it after a few matches though.

But can you win the premier league adopting this philosophy ? Find your best 11 as early as possible and play it, with minor changes depending on big opponents. continuity alongside depth wins the premier league, not trail and error. Especially when we are talking 3/4 games per "idea".

I guess everyone was under the impression that we'd take of where we left off last season with the 433/4141 that worked quite well, would be annoying to see us go through the amount of changes we went through last year, now is pre season so it doesn't matter THAT much. imo we've got to have the best 11 with players settled in their roles by mid October latest.

Meanwhile L'Equipe are on twitter reporting a deal has been struck between united and psg over di maria.

Well according to L'Equipe City had agreed a deal for Fabinho a couple of weeks ago, I wouldn't read too much into this either.

L'Equipe is hardly the fecking word of God. They reported Fabinho to City as a done deal.

I think this story is bullshit (once again), as I don't think we'd sell him at a loss. The French media have been pretty shit with this whole Di Maria saga.

Another unreliable outlet reporting it. Still waiting on whether this is true.

Can we ban an entire country's media from this thread? Has that been done before? Fecking French..

: L'Equipe: Di Maria to undergo medical in New York at NYRB's facilities before signing contract. Few details left to iron out on that front.

"Few details left to iron out" - Agree, it's nothing news. I thought L equipe are reliable.

Last summer to get most of our money back off Di Maria, so its not the most surprising thing in the world if he's sold.

We don't know what the original price is. 65m euros and realistic bonuses could easy be enough to cover the whole transfer.

If it were true, everyone, including all the big journos would be all over it. As opposed to random muppet twitter accounts just retweeting what Lequip said.
