I think the Ramos thing is BS as well which explains my annoyance at not having already paid Valencia their buy out clause for Otamendi.
I don't think there is much between them skill wise. Ramos is the better all round footballer as he can control the ball and distribute out of defence very well - which is, in my opinion, LVG's main reason for having Ramos as Plan A. Otamendi is the better defender, and seems to be more professional on the pitch and off it (going by how both players have handled this transfer fiasco).
We're really playing with fire here not having already signed Otamendi. The player himself won't exactly be over the moon about being the Plan B.
But let's face it, this is all speculation and for all we know Otamendi and Ramos are perfectly happy staying in Spain.
A possibility is that Otamendi is actually the one who is holding all the cards, playing the Di Maria game. Is he waiting to see if Ramos leaves, and if so, go to his plan A, Real Madrid? If Ramos stays then he always has the good aul trusty United to fall back on?
