I agree he's not suited to the Prem. He's too small for one thing. However, we all know how could he can be, and he's certainly vocal when confident.

I wouldn't be too gutted if he was our main keeper.

I'd be gutted, I think we could kiss any hope of a title challenge goodbye with such a huge weakness in the team.

If we become good enough, we won't be facing many typical PL games. It's a big IF though so I can see your reservations. I myself am torn on this one. On the one hand I think it's worth giving a shot and that it would be worth it to have the odd mistake here and there if it meant we are dominant and authoritative most of the time. On the other hand, I think if we do not reach a certain level, we will be left with eggs on our faces. Up to Van Gaal to decide the potential of this team I suppose.

It doesn't really matter how good we become and we are still miles off to boot, but in the PL aerial threats and set pieces are a big part of the game, we'll get punished time and time again with such a weak keeper who is useless on crosses.

What makes you think he isnt a good RB? You do know thats where he used to play right?

Nobody is denying that. But buying one of the best CBs in the world and shifting him to right back isn't a good idea. Especially when he is miles better than our CBs.

Surely a man who has won a World Cup and European Cup at RB is also a top RB? I think people are recognising that our right back position is weaker than our CB, and that there is a lack of talent available at RB. We could conceivably sign Ramos for RB and Otamendi or Hummels to play alongside Smalling which would strengthen us across the board.

If we signed Ramos and nobody else for CB, we are still stuck with who to bring in at RB.

The other issue might actually be his preference. A player of his profile will have a sizeable ego and I am not sure but I think that his preferred position is CB.

Very true. The third issue is that this is all highly likely to be bol|ocks and he was never close to coming!
Saw a funny quote on twitter a few minutes ago but can't find it again. Said something like: "Fancy an extra 100k a week and 3 years on your contract? Text "flirt" to Ed Woodward at..."

Over the past 2 or 3 months of the previous season, we were not even that good or as good as I am talking about and we still dealt with a relatively small amount of pressure even against the best sides. Yes there was games against Palace and West Ham where they put us under massive pressure at times but most of the time we were in total control and it was our impotency up front that held us back. I understand what you mean about the nature of the PL but I really believe that we overstate that since we enjoyed so much success under Fergie playing a relatively more "conventional" style.

I think that using Ramos as a RB would be an unforgivable waste. He is not playing in that position for 4 years and I do not think he has any interest in returning there , if the team really needs a RB should look for one acting as such instead of spending a fortune on Ramos

In the games where we didn't seem to face as much pressure part of that was down to De Gea mopping up set pieces easily, corners and free kicks were not that big of a threat when lumped in because of how good he is in the air. If we have Valdes every side will fancy their chances off a corner as he's hopeless in the air, it's stupid to leave such a glaring weakness in the team.

I didn't say he wasn't a good RB, just that he isn't as good there as he is at CB. If we sign him it will be to play him in his best position.

1.83-1.93 according to wiki.. which would mean Valdes is just over 6 ft, De Gea is more like 6.4.

Although, it is Wiki.

You can tell just by their stature on the pitch that there's a significant height difference. 4 inches is a fair amount!

I hope we dont go for Ramos.. He's not really that great and not a huge fan of his attitude either.. Rather have us give Smalling and Jones a go and being in someone young as cover alongside McNair and Evans..

We've gave Smalling and Jones ago, one or both ended up injured.

Yeah, it's basically an 8 inch in that wingspan is probably what matters moreso than height for a keeper, assuming both men have average wingspans for their height, which might be dead wrong.

Out of the 3, Godin would be my first choice every time. This guy knows how to defend, not spectacular, but a very good defender.
Personally I am surprised not to see him more often in the transfer conversations. I guess it's a matter of age(although he is 29,as Ramos) , besides Simeone said a few days ago that him and Koke were the only unsaleable players

But we are signing those players willing to make a step up and improve.
Shaw
Rojo
Depay
Herrera
DDG
Blind even.
Depending on the De Gea situation, half our team could be based on the transfer policy you're in favour of.
It's not as if were going out bidding for Messi and Naymar and abandoning the rest

You can add jones and smalling to that list as well.
