I don’t know why people keep saying Todibo other than he plays for a Ratcliffe team.
he’s useless in the air and would be badly paired with Martinez

That's his only flaw. I think he's a great defender, very good on the ball and will probably cost less than most other CBs. I see where you're coming from with that pairing being vulnerable in the air, but between the two (Branthwaite - Todibo) I would prefer Todibo for his ball playing abilities. If Martinez is out (which is going to happen at some point) we have no one in the back who can progress the ball efficiently. I'd hate to see us overpay for another mediocre brexitball CB just because he's English. I'm open to other options, Todibo just seems like an affordable option for a team that has a lot of spots to fill/replace.

As long as it’s not in a 2 with Martinez
As great as Martinez can/has been for us, this is one of the 2 issues I have with him as a starter.
He's height means you need the 2nd CB and at least one midfielder to be aerially dominant. This is why whenever he's started, we've always had to play either Casemiro or McTominay. We could never start 3 small midfielders like for example liverpool do. Whatever DM we sign, needs to be very capable in the air.
The other issue is that, whenever he doesn't play, we have to rethink how we progress the ball up the field, which can be a problem as can be seen with how we've struggled without him this season. He's such an atypical CB in that regard. Of course these aren't impossible issues to deal with, but I believe one of the key principles of building squad chemistry is that the subs should be similar enough to starting eleven players that they can slot in without needing a big change to your style of play.
Thilnking about it, you have the same depth chart contradition with AWB and Dalot, Completely different style of players.
This squad needs a lot of work. Good luck Ineos.

You can't really say it's a problem with Martinez, that we have no one else capable of progressing the ball. Plus, the problem has been highlighted further this season due to Shaw being out as well, otherwise he'd be an extra route to progressing the ball as he's one of the best full backs in Europe in that regard.

If we're signing 2 CBs this season, as should be the case, then we should be spending big on the RCB, as they should be good in the air, and not a complete disaster when asked to progress the ball. The other CB would then be a back up to Martinez and as long as they are decent on the ball you don't need them to be a mountain in the air.

Using your Liverpool example, Van Dijk is the superstar defender who can do it all. The rest have 1 main strength whilst being competent at the rest.

Atletico trying to fob Felix off on us to get their hands on Greenwood, feck off. Sick of clubs refusing to stump up cash for our players while demanding huge fees when we come for theirs.

Same here, but I hope the new management changes tack and players like Sancho, Greenwood, or anyone of value should be sold at a fee the club deems good enough, clubs need to know that they gotta pay.

I agree, although for the amount we’d actually get for greenwood given no one in England is going to sign him, it’s not a terrible deal all things considered.

This is why the director of football and technical directors are so important.
They need to decide on how we want to play, what functions within the team are needed to play that way, what minimum requisite skillset players need to carry out those role/functions, then reshape the squad to ensure all the players meet that minimum requirement for their position. If they get this right with recruitment, it'll solve the issues we are talking about.

Any defender brought in needs to be able to progress the ball well. Same goes for the dm we bring in.

Needs to be tall, strong fast and good on the ball to complement Martinez

Have we ever sold or bought a player from Athletico Madrid?

I don’t think so, the rumour was they don’t like us because we do business with Real Madrid so many failed attrmpt, Griezmann, Saul, Gimemez, Trippier, J Felix(Previously)
To me this is just more media noise not going to happen, Mason might end up in Italy especially if Napoli get Conte and €220m for Osimhen and kvaratskhelia he will be sold to Napoli for €50m especially seeing as his wages are moderate.

Is this the first player we sign from Ipswich since Muhren 40+ years ago or have we signed some youngster after him ? They have signed a few from us but I can't think of anyone going the other way - or am I wrong ?

Arnold Muhren, the Brighton FA cup final.. was that really 40 years ago, bloody hell.

I understand the frustration about not getting good enough offers for our own players, but in this example wouldn't we be getting a very good deal? I am not familiar with what Felix produced this year, but he is a good player, no? And to get a quality young player, entering his hypothetical "prime" years in exchange for a player that is on our books but not ever going to be in our kit again, sounds like a win!

The exact type of deal Woodward & Co. would sanction and INEOS need to avoid. Go get Tosin from Fulham on a free.

Well if Jim and his men are so good at his job - they will persuade Everton to sell Branthwaite £15-20 million cheaper.

So instead of buying a world-class talent who is madly overpriced - we should sign a good (but certainly not great) player for free....hm...interesting theory

Yes.

If he's madly overpriced we shouldn't be anywhere near him.

Provided that Martinez is likely to be the prefered option for LCB even when we sign Branthwaite it's basically a question whether or not we should go for madly overpriced or low-cost for our backups. With limited cash/budget we should spend our money wisely and on the most pressing needs (imo LCB is not where we should allocate most of our funds).

Straight from the Woodward and Co. thinking on transfers that landed us Maguire and Antony. And I also don’t think Branthwaite is a world class talent. Nothing stands out in him. Madly overhyped and madly overpriced. No, thanks.

Or we try to sign the madly overpriced talent - for a significantly lower amount. What we dont do - is aim for a much worse player just because he is free.

Wonderful use of €7m. When we had a suitable backup in Kovar.
We made our money back with Kovar and given ETH only played our Bayındır once (when Onana was at AFCON) vs Newport County means it was probably in Kovar's best interest to leave the club and in our best interest to sell him as he would never play.
