If it's a loan then I suppose its fine, but signing these crap backup keepers always feel a bit of a waste of time. Hopefully we spend the season scouting for De Gea's replacement.

Why are we trying to sign every keeper on the planet? Just sign a good one who can take DdG’s place instead of some 2nd rate keeper.
A first choice keeper would probably cost upwards of £60m unless the scouting team can unearth an unknown talent, which is extremely unlikely.

Personal opinion: I prefer a goalie good with his hands to a goalie good with his feet, given the choice. But obviously we'd want someone good with both.

Still better than De Gea with his feet while being comfortably better at everything else.

I disagree. Pope is really clumsy with his feet. Fantastic at commanding his area and a good shot stopper. I do like him, but I don’t think he’d be anywhere near the ‘perfect’ ETH keeper.

... I assume this summers spending spree (say if we get in another 3 players as often suggested) is being funded on the back of the minority sale of ownership? If so that’s a very Leeds like move under Ridsdale is it not.

I think you assume incorrectly. The glazers do not put their own money into the club. Any funds from selling ownership stakes is theirs in their eyes, that money will go to them. Any money spent on the club will be a loan which is then loaded back onto the club.

Losing to Liverpool would have seen us buy another 3 players.

wait what? so we beat Liverpool and the back up keeper budget disappeared, and we cooled our interest on Gakpo, and no more CM?

Why so surprised ?

It's always been like this.

Spend just enough to appease the fans.

No loan fee
6m transfer fee if he's a success
Covering part of his wages

Jesus Christ we're a joke
That bolded statement is disingenuous. Every reliable United journalist has reported that Bailly's wages will be covered in full (Dawson, Luckhurst, Ducker, Stone, and Peach).

Including the tweet he quoted.

But moaning is a brainless activity.

I don't think we were ever in hot pursuit for a central midfielder, especially after we signed Casemiro. On the keeper situation, we were never looking to pay a big transfer fee for a keeper, so that rules out every starting keeper we were linked with, especially since they weren't even for sale.

On Gakpo, the cooling of interest is based on the fact that we aren't actively negotiating for him at this time. We are still definitely interested in Gakpo, but I'm not surprised that United are focused on getting this Antony transfer done ASAP. Gakpo will also be relatively expensive, so I'm not surprised that United are first focusing on negotiations for one expensive transfer before going into the other one.

Not disingenuous. I was just going off what I read. Take it out and it's still a joke. 6m for Eric Bailly after a free loan is a disgraceful bit of business. I'd rather lose the 6m just so I could tell OM to do one.

Sorry about this :( But 5 more minutes passes, and there are similar twits from other sources already, so it’s likely true
Which sources are these? I'm only seeing references to Simon Jones or the Daily Mail on Twitter at this time.

That's the state of the European market, even with the big clubs. No team will ever be willing to spend big on a player that has relatively bigger wages with their current club. Even a team like Juventus, with all of their Agnelli money, is unwilling to pay much to bring in players like Paredes and Milik (who they only started pursuing because Memphis's wages were too high for them). Notice how much both Arsenal and Chelsea are also struggling to offload their unwanted players (see Pépé and Batshuayi).

Bailly has been repeatedly complaining about game time and we need to get rid of disruptive influences. I sympathise with him because our cbs have been rubbish but at some point it’s best to just move on.

We’ll save 4-5m in wages and get another 5m hopefully at the end of the season instead of having another player moaning at the club.

Yeah I don't think it's that bad of a deal all things considered.
Think about how things went with Rojo. No-one showed any interest, then deadline day came and we'd get a really shit loan offer, which we'd turn down and end up keeping him but not playing him. This easily could keep happening with Bailley. What we've got for Bailley is infinitely better than what we're getting for Jones.
