Usually signing lots of players doesn't work very well because they don't know each other and or how to play together. It's better to get 3-4 each year and integrate them properly IMO.
So in your book no appropriate targets were available that we could have got? You can't think of one missed target this summer?
It couldn't be possible that the club failed to identify targets or failed in negotiations and that's before we even go into possible constraints such as budget or Woody overriding the manager etc.

Your seriously telling me with with Ole being given the permanent role as manager before the end of the season so that they could get a head start on planning for the next season, they couldn't find 2 players that would be n improvement over lingard/mata or a declining matic and supposedly bang average Herrera which was the narrative from many fans to protect Woodward for being a dummy in not trying renew his contract a lot sooner.
Other clubs have gone about making 4 or 5 signings to improve their teams and with a higher level of quality to replace as well.

As for Mata, if we actually play him as a 10 then I don't think he will be an issue. Having pace around him will suit him a lot.
