We can afford to let Mata and Sanchez go, they both offer very little at this point.

Well you mentioned 2 I already said and Varane isn't a legit option, Skriniar is too flat footed and slow for the PL in my view and why fund Barca's de Ligt move by paying no doubt huge money for an injury prone CB they no longer deem good enough? As for Ruben Dias, he is the Benfica CB, right? Never seen him play but he's inexperienced and from a poor league, not sure he'd be usurping Smalling.

Do you not think that Lindelof is better than Smalling? He came from the same team with not much more experience.

Skriniar would be a good option. He is good on the ball and reads the game well. Speed is not as important if you can read whats going to happen.

Umtiti. While i agree the injuries are a concern, on his day he is amongst the best in his position. Barca are mad if they deem him not good enough. They just want a new toy.

I honestly do not think Varane is leaving but i also think its more realistic than some people believe. He has done it all at Madrid and is young enough that he can move elsewhere and grow into a new team.

We're not going to make it sound like we're desperate to get rid, even though we are. I wouldn't read anything into what Robson says.
Agent: "Mr Woodward, is Alexis..."

Ed: "Yes!"

That desperate enough for ya?

Out of a cheaper, inferior footballer or a more expensive, better footballer, as a football fan remember, which is the "excellent decision"?

Shaw is not the same caliber alright but I don't think the difference between Hernandez and Shaw is £38M.

See the doom and gloom about a possible bad summer. I do think the last few summers we should have made a couple more signings in the windows than we have.....but that isnt the biggest problem for me personally.

The biggest problems is we just havent made many good signings at all since Ferguson retired. We have signed older players including big names that some have been successful but very short term, some big names like Sanchez. Schweinsteiger and Falcao that havent worked at all, players like Mata ad Fellaini that dont really suit our style of play and top pretty young players like Depay, Bailly and DiMaria that just havent worked.

That kind of leads on to the second biggest problem, our signings have on the whole been very poor and nearly all of them have either moved on or in the case of players like Rojo and Darmian....should be. That is why we are still giving contract to the likes of JOnes and Young because the replacements havent been good enough.

I think this will be a similar signing numbers wise with 3/4 max in, I just hope we get the quality right and in the right positions. If we are able to add a quality centre back and players like Bisska, Sancho, DeLight or similar players.....added to a few good youngsters we have, we may actually be in a position to move on more of the bang average players we have had at the club for far too long

If I'm honest I'm tired of comparing or moaning about prices. Clubs with aspirations to be the best, like Bayern for example, pay what it takes to get the players they want.

Just like City, Liverpool, Barca, Real and Juve.

Everyone thought it was mad to pay £100m for a 34 year old Ronaldo or £75m for a CB.

No they didn’t.

This is the first time Bayern paid that kind of money for anyone. They benefited a ton from taking talent off of Dortmund and other German clubs in recent years with most players running down their deals and arriving for cheap.

Yep, and this is the first time since prices have really inflated that they've had to spend as their squad was generally okay. First time they have to spend the real big money, they do. £70m-odd on a CB.

Top teams are paying top money. We've done the same, just not spent it as wisely. For a number of reasons.

Everyone has hits and misses. Some more than others. Even Barcelona in their infinite wisdom have spent on absolute duds and still kept winning because they have Messi.

Where have I argued they haven't?

My point has been I'm done caring about price tags as long as the money is spent on the right players for the team.

City batted no eyelids at spending £120m on 3 fullbacks in one summer because that's what their manager wanted. Liverpool identified VVD as the CB they wanted. They fecked up, then came back and paid what it took.

If Ole, let's say it is him, says he wants Sancho and it's going to take £100m to get him, as fans of the football club, we shouldn't care. As long as the manager feels he is the right player and he does produce the goods.

Not sure if applied to you, but everyone is an expert in looking over the fence. The same people making this complaint will continue to voice concern over us paying what it takes to get Koulibaly, despite him being a world class centre half in his prime.

I agree in a vacuum.

However given the scale of reconstruction job Bayern have on their hands, unless they have an unlimited budget this time (which is quite possible considering they not been spending before), they could have found a cheaper, workable option there and invested more into their attack to replace the likes of Robben, Ribery etc and add more depth to a midfield that lacks life behind Thiago, Martinez etc which are bigger priorities for them.

If defenders are worth 68M, those positions are going to cost a lot more.

With Boateng and Hummels on the decline, I think they're mainly bringing in replacements in Pavard and Hernandez. They may play a few games at full back but will mostly be playing at CB along with Sule. They like their versatile players with Alaba and Kimmich capable of playing in midfield as well as full back

I was reading Kovac wants to play 352 with Sule, Pavard and Hernandez at CB's, Kimich and Alaba at wing.

We should let Alexis go away for free, I believe that's the only way any team might want to pay his wages.

No team will pay his wages simply because he isn’t worth his wages. Many teams won’t pay Messi’s because they can’t afford it, however, Sanchez simply isn’t value and not worth it.

I can’t imagine a Chinese side wouldn’t take him on a free if their “only” expense would be his wages.

True, a Chinese team perhaps. No European side will though. Even PSG who are loaded. They wouldn’t make him their highest earner, as he’s rubbish.

If not China, a wage cut is most likely if he’s to leave I suspect.

How much of that do you think could be attributed to the overall strength of the squad?
Of course Austria hasn't the best squad but as I watch every international game of them, I can say who is performing or not in his position.
As a CDM Baumgartlinger stands out in the team for example. Alaba has his best performances in the NT when playing on the left combined with Arnautovic (as a LM/LW pair or as a LB/LM pair) but as a CDM, he is nothing special. I'm not saying he is poor in this position but even in the NT we have a better option there.
He plays there often because he don't want to be a LB there and that wasn't a big issue for me when we still had Fuchs playing there and not a good CDM pairing for our 451 but now we need a top LB more than a decent CDM as we have Baumgartlinger, Ilsanker and Schlager for this position

Oh yeah, that's definitely not me.

Knowing Bayern they've probably got Havertz lined up in a swap for a packet of chocolate biscuits.

I think he's different to Smalling, their strengths and weaknesses are ideally matched, but it took Lindelof a year to just settle here and he was already an international, is Dias? I just think he'd be an expensive and inexperienced risk, I mean he's the same age as our own Axel.

Speed is important to have in at least one CB which would be missing in a partnerrship with Lindelof, and he's also flat footed, that mobility issue can be exploited in the PL.

We should be going for de Ligt not funding them by buying Umtiti, Barca rarely make transfer mistakes, if they are getting rid of Umtiti chances are there's a good reason.

I just can't see Varane leaving now Zidane is back, especially not to come to a club that isn't even in the hunt right now.

Would cost 600 million for that team. Not a chance.

CB, RB, RW?
Three areas in which we need the most investment. We should be buying a CM irrespective of Herrera's contract situation. I can see why the chances of that happening are slim as Sancho + Koulibaly + RB would cost us 200-220 mill.

I would like to see us not renewing Mata's contract plus selling Sanchez and replacing them with Sancho + new backup attacker. Plus sell Rojo + Bailly + Jones and replace them with Koulibaly /Skriniar and a younger CB. Yeah that's a bit too much to hope for but, here's hoping

It said FB, not RB. I don’t understand why more is not said of LB. We have one in the whole squad.
