It's the same shit every summer. We all sit and chat about how a major rebuild is needed but it never happens. The inability of us finding and spending money on the right players is what has put us in this position. We are now left with half a squad that needs shipping out. If this summer is not used wisely we'll be in the exact same position next year scrapping for 4th place.

We might still sign a new CB however the chances of it happening went down considerably once the club decided to keep Jones on our books for the foreseeable future. A ridiculous decision but it's been made and we are stuck with it.

Sometimes players are given contracts just so i better price can be negotiated if that player was to leave. Jones contract will have no bearing on weither we sign a CB

Who the hell would be willing to spend any money on Phil Jones?

Jones new contract if anything makes him harder to shift, it doesn't benefit us at all. No one is paying good money for him, and he has no hunger or need to leave when we're paying him so well. It was a beyond stupid contract.

I agree. It doesn't change the fact that someone thought that it was an investment worth making.

Alot of bottom half teams would take Jones. Even some midtable, we could get 10-15m for him from someone like Newcastle or West Ham.

We wont because he will just stick with his new deal. We also seem to be exceptionally shite at getting good prices when players are sold.

Plenty of teams would. We do an excellent job of overrating and underrating our players here.

He'd be a quality signing for mid table teams.

I predicted this CB thing months ago and actually quoted almost that exact headline as the board's narrative for the summer yesterbloodyday.

We're getting shafted again this summer lads.

We're all hoping for a great summer but it seems it might be a depressing one. Ed's briefs and preparing bids for 1 or 2 players tops.

No it didn't. We've been linked with nearly 10 CBs, the club is clearly looking for a CB. Jones extending and this Chris wheeler scatter gunning has no effect on this, we will continue to look to buy a CB.

It's naive to assume we are buying a new player because of 'links'. United are linked with dozens of players every week. I expect last summer you were also certain we were buying a new centre back because we were constantly linked with Maguire/Alderweireld/numerous other players.

The problem now is the same as it was then. Centre back is a crowded position for us, even if Rojo leaves we would still have four senior CBs plus Tuanzebe and, to a less extent, Fosu-Mensah. Difficult for us to buy another one when we have multiple other positions in a worse state. Letting Jones leave would have be an indication we were planning something but instead we gave him a new long term contract. That says to me that the club are content with the current options and, just like last summer, will only buy if one of Woodward's dreams like Varane is available.

I imagine Alderweireld for 25m is Woodys dream. Experienced and cheap. I said months ago that we wont spend 100m on a CB (Koulibaly). We either buy a young and cheaper one for 40m or go for Toby. We would never do a Liverpool and buy one for top money and solve our CB issues, thats too easy.

Can some of you stop acting like little babies already? It's March 27th and some of you are panicking over a Daily Mail article...

You can't say we didn't obviously try to buy one last summer, we just got stiffed on prices. The market has calmed down since then, with options like Alderweireld that are available for 25m - although I think that we won't go for him.

Rojo will leave, Tuanzebe will go back on loan to Villa if they come up, or another prem club and TFM will be moved on. There's probably quite a strong possibility Bailly will leave too. It also seems like Varane is potentially available, so I'm not sure you're on the money here.

Alderweireld was one of Mourinho's targets last summer which Woodward vetoed because of age and wage demands. At least that was the story leaked/briefed to all the press at the end of the window.

Mourinho wanted a new CB last summer but Woodward was happy with our current options and only wanted a superstar like Varane. At the moment I think it will be the same situation this summer.

If Bailly leaves then yes we will buy a new centre back. However that's conditional. You seem to believe we are 100% buying a new centre back no matter what and I'm trying to say we might but it will depend on our sales and if there is a player out there that both Woodward and whoever our manager is can agree on. I'm not trying to pick an argument with you, just don't get your hopes up basically :)

You better watch out for a Nigerian Prince email if you believe that.
Woodward handed Jones a new contract after he stayed fit for 6 games. After he signed, he went for a disappearing act again. Woodward gave Rojo a new contract on massive wages, since then he has played a handful of games. Woodward gave jose a contract extension and then proceeded to sign Grant, Fred and Dalot. He has also made Shaw the highest paid LB in the world. Our converted winger-RB Ashley Young is also paid more then the majority of forwards in the league. Is it really that unbelievable for Woodward to give Jones a pay rise?

Ed can feck off. Why the hell is he the one to judge what this squad does or doesn't need. fecking sick of this.

No one is panicking. The article is a mere suppliment to the mountain of ineptitude Woodward shows. The concern is real and won't be solved until a proper structure is put in place. Not surprising that we havent really made a breakthrough on that side either.

The manager gives Ed Woodward a list but Woodward has veto power. What the feck is that all about? I'm not surprised that LVG and Mou complained about him, he's a banker telling football people they are wrong. Woodward should give the manager a budget and that's it, he has no business saying a player is not good enough, not worth the fee or not an upgrade. He has no expertise to make those claims.

Our financial mismanagement is well documented, but we obviously didn't give Jones a 140% pay rise.

For sure, Sancho is only our target, mostly reported by 1-2 tier but it feels like we have not identified players this summer for other position like CB, midfielders, and fullback, I don't know who we can buy in summer. We know Bayern want CHO, Havertz, Hernandez. Barca wants Jovic and De Ligt. They are more open to the media about their transfers plan than we do.

If I'm going to make guess, we'll get one CB of Varane/Koulibaly, Sancho and Bruno, that's it. Probably will get Ndombele if Herrera leaving. I'd like to see NDombele replace Matic as holding midfielder, deepest midfielder of three.

It’s a joke. The recruitment has been damaging this team for years now.

It's time for everybody to accept that Woodward is playing real life Football Manager. Where is this mythical Director of Football? He spins that line to appease fans, that's all.

The guy has no intention of handing over the fun part of his remit, which is signing players. Brian McClair said himself he got that impression. Wait till it's season ticket renewal period then we get linked with Neymar etc. The outcome is the same, Woodward decides who we sign and our profit margin is the main focus.

Just a reminder, to prepare everybody for the summer...

To be fair, I always sign a director of football in FM and they're routinely terrible at picking out, or signing players.

The soul crushing part is I see no end in sight. The Glazers only care about competing 'just enough' to keep the sponsors happy so to keep the gravy train rolling on. Ed talks a big game but he's full of s**t. Like when we spend big if we finish outside the top 4 but then immediately tighten the budget once secured.

What kind of strategy for success is that?

That's why do I believe De Gea & Pogba will be off. They see through Ed's bulls**t. They know we won't be investing enough to compete properly.

It's a complete joke.

Let's see how the Glazers react when their best players start looking elsewhere.

I want to believe this can't continue forever. This strategy is flawed. You can only fool the players for so long. They will leave if you don't match their ambitions. Then what?

The truth is we do not need what you think we need. We do not need to ship anywhere near half the squad out. Many of our players are not inferior to several others at top 6 clubs, and even beyond in Europe. What we DO lack is the same first XI quality as a few of these rivals, largely because we have our ‘United Way’ of buying our top quality players at a stage in their career where they are still practically in school. Our most talented players are on the whole, ‘developing’. Our players in their prime are not all that, or not very top level at least. The likes of Rashford, Martial, Dalot, Shaw, Lindelöf and even Pogba are maturing players. The likes of Herrera, Jones, Smalling, Sanchez and Matic are the ones who are in their prime right now, but they are not as good as the developing players. Fair chance we will add Sancho, who will also be one of our most talented players, but still only 19. That would be better if we had a Griezmann at 27 delivering, but every other forward around Sancho will also be young.

The best players at most of our rivals are 26-30. Ours are 19-25. De Gea is in his prime, and it shows. Yet there is great resistance to buying Koulibaly, for example, as he’s ‘too old’ at 27. I think our fans would like us to buy all the most promising 20 year olds and that’s it.
