I have to agree with those saying that a stand must be made on wages at some point.

We made the mistake in skewing our structure so badly with a dud like Sanchez. It's a pain but it's vitally important that we learn from this, move Sanchez on ASAP and get the structure back under control.

I do love Ander, he's a huge player & character for us under Ole, he'd have been my pick for captain next year (should have been after Mourinho's first season).

Despite this I wouldn't be putting him among the top earners at the club. Give him a fair raise along with a 3 year contract & let's hope he puts pen to paper.

Oh and for the love of God get a DOF already please Ed.

Would be disappointing not to extend Herrera when we gave a lengthy deal to that clown Jones. Herrera is a key player and would take £40m+ to get a player of similar quality in this market (although that's what we spent on the inferior Fred).

I would be amazed if it's anything other than posturing via Herrera's agent.

PSG probably see Ander as a solid free replacement for Rabiot, and we may see Rabiot as a solid free signing to replace Ander - however, Rabiot's wage demands sound pretty damn big. And he seems a prima donna, to boot.

Hopefully it is just the usual final-stage contract negotiation drivel. We'd be stupid to let him go.

I doubt it. If he hasn’t begun considering playing for other teams at this stage of his contract he’d be very foolish.

Contract length must be the issue as it was with Fellaini
As well as, you know, just not knowing if he'll be going into the new season with his 4th new manager in as many years.

What is it with people here acting like players must all want to stay at this club in the current state it's in?

Well he said he wanted to....

Rashford to Barcelona, wow. I would go out on a limb and say that of our entire squad, Rashy is probably the one we’re least likely to ever sell.

We might not want to sell but ,homeboy or not,he's an ambitious individual. If United dont get their act together then the ambitious players will eventually start having doubts about the clubs ambitions/goals.

He was quoted yesterday saying how he was so honoured to play for the biggest club in England! There is zero percent chance he stays in the Prem if his contact expires! His agent is causing mischief to boost his clients deal- of that I am sure!

If Barcelona came in with a £100m+ for Rashford I'd take it in a heart beat.

You're certainly in the minority with that opinion.

We should keep hold of our academy products especially if they are among our best players.

I don't even rate Rashford as an elite player, but he is certainly good enough to be a part of our team, possibly for the next decade.

It's also important to remember that even if we received £100 million+ for him, there is no guarantee that the money will be spent acquiring new players, and even if it was, there is no guarantee it will be spent wisely on the correct player(s).

Selling Rashford sets a bad precedent IMO, not to mention it goes against the DNA and tradition of our club.

Would Herrera even get a game at PSG?

This all sounds like stories put out by his agent to get a better contract.

Seems strange that he would leave now that he's getting regular games under OGS and there's talk of him being our captain next season.

Oh, I was under the impression that we don't always get the truth in interviews. Is that not the case?

Well obviously but its more likely he does want to stay since hes been saying so for a while and if he didn't he would more than likely say nothing like Mata.

So that's just a guess without any real knowledge of the situation.

This is also just a guess without any real knowledge: Ander Herrera would have acted like he loved any club that bought him from Bilbao. It's part of his thing. He knows it gets the fans on his side and makes life for him and his family that much easier in town. His affection for United is not something especially reserved for just United. Beyond just that part, I can't just assume that he wants to stay in a situation where he is in and out of the team as often as a new manager is. It's much easier to assume that he's grown tired of the turnover and turmoil and lack of progress at the club and doesn't want to say as much to the press.

Of course that also your guess you could be right. I think its more likely if he was thinking along those lines he would just keep quiet and secure his move, to PSG where hes likely to also not be in the team much but get a longer contract and be paid well.

Lottery for me despite the work thats goes into them. You can sign a world class player thats proven everywhere that hes played and still cant guarentee whether he'd be a success.
That's not what a lottery is. The word you are looking for is 'risk'.

Slightly controversial here but I won’t blame the club if they are refusing to give him large wages on a long deal.

When Herrera’s legs go, there won’t be that much of a player left there.
That's not controversial but rather common sense.

It's not common sense to give the club any credit for the situation we are in now. We could have extended his contract last season for much less money and we would have the perfect scenario - our 2nd best midfielder on fairly cheap wages until he's 32, then we extend by one year as we see fit. Instead they did nothing, and now we lose him for free, or give him a contract on inflated wages until he's at least 33.

Just another disaster by Woodward et al.

Madrid have this wonderful policy over the last six odd years of linking themselves with the best players to act big balls only to sign lesser players instead.
Oh we could have signed him, we just decided to go another way..

Huge wages and a long deal is for me. Do we know when he got the contract offer?

Nobody knows the details. We could have offered him ‘much less money’ last year and he wasn’t willing to sign it. Because he wants more, otherwise he’d sign it now if he didn’t want more.

I don't think offering him a long term deal on big wages is the very smart. I'm also asking if we know when he got offered an extension?
I didn't say it was. My point is we shouldn't be giving credit to Woodward for letting one our best performing players leave on a free at the age of 29. He obviously wasn't offered a new contract until recently, or we would have given him one. During the summer last season, he was 28. That would have been the perfect time to give him his last big contract, taking him to 32. He wouldn't have been able to talk to other clubs, so we wouldn't have to 'match' wages from PSG etc. That's common sense.
