Why would he join United when he's had offers from PSG, Barca and City?

Certain players might want to choose us over the teams that you have mentioned as they might want the challenge of making us great again and then that particular player going down in history as providing a vital contribution in doing so

Real thing or wishful thinking? (Kieran Maguire is a Lecturer in football finance at Uni of Liverpool.)

My first reaction to the tweet was of indifference but then I dug a little deeper and looked at our last six years of financials, our trade payables do seem to be increasing faster than our revenue. It's definitely at least a little worry-some. It may actually mean that we have to sell before we can buy.

Would this work, considering he's on loan from Benfica, and if Barca wanted to sign him, Frankfurt would have to take up their option to buy and then Barca would have to immediately buy him from them, surely not.

Why not?
Think Kimmich transferred in a similar way. Only he was playing for Leipzig and bought back by Stuttgart due to clause and sold to Bayern.

It looks scarier than it is, almost no-one pays up front anymore it's not a huge deal.

Take Transfermarkt as gospel price (which it's not but whatever), this is devoid of all player bonuses/ agent fees and all other bullshit. Of the 735million we have spent in the last 5 years, we owe 267mil to be paid over the next 5 which given the limited data we have is probably the last 3 years or so. Keep in mind, unless I'm reading this wrong, this is only spending.

Even though we are "shit at selling", we have sold 219mil worth of players in the same time frame, of which we are probably still owed 79mil (rough as shit guess) over the next five.

This figure will drop unless we go mad in the summer.

My problem isn't with the absolute numbers itself, I obviously know we pay transfer fees in installments. We also receive money for players we sell in installments and the exact figure for trade receivables is around £133m(source: 2018 annual report filings). My problem is with trade payable as a ratio of our revenue is at an all time high. Plain English, our transfer fees is increasing faster than our revenue and I don't think that is sustainable in long-term. We have to sell but good news for us is that we have plenty of deadwood to shift.

That true of every club though, the market is insane, but we will see a considerable drop in next years accounts unless there is additional spending over greater or equal to the value of the accounts being paid so >140m in the next two windows (including now) or so.

PSG are well known for keeping players when they want to leave. He’ll not be allowed to leave until he’s well past stagnation.
If he does well he could leave when his contract ends and he would still be coming to his prime. If they win the CL it will be worth it for him. If he doesn't then he might just let his contract run down. It is now up to him to keep the other big clubs interested and not just fade into oblivion.

Why we ain't interested?

Who's says we are not interested? Just because a player is linked it's absolutely no indication the club is or isn't interested. The press make it up as the go along.
I'll be honest I hope we are but even then there may well be lots of others interested too.

Whilst, surprise surprise, we're clearly twiddling our thumbs doing nothing, letting all the talents get away

Do you honestly think the club are not looking at improvements all the time? We have scouts all over the world. The issue is that so does many other big clubs. We can't sign everyone and the same is true for every club.

He’s a lecturer of football finance and comes out with nonsense like that?

If and only if it's true then you can't tell me we are the only club which operates in this way. All clubs will be doing the same and if anything it's probably been a smart way to pay given the huge jump in transfer free recently.

I bet we're at best preparing a bid for someone. If that, while all the other clubs are working on transfers.

Lot of sense in this post. You don't belong in this thread.

They’re hardly well known, let alone being well known for any particular behaviour. They’ve only been relevant for less than a decade.

Gotta give it to Chelsea. They are specialist in moving out unwanted people. Wish we learn from them

Higuain won't take us up a completely new level or anything like say Icardi would, but so long as he isn't total shite like Morata has been we should have a much better time cementing a top 4 place. Like, if he knocks in 10-12 goals in the PL this season that's good enough.

Valverde has opened the door for the Brazilian to leave this January. He has told him that he will have very few opportunities
