Real thing or wishful thinking? (Kieran Maguire is a Lecturer in football finance at Uni of Liverpool.)

Isn't that just down to the way that transfer costs are amortized over the length of the contract rather than paid upfront thought?

Sort of been touched upon in the responses to that tweet by the looks of it. It sounds like we're operating as we have been over the years.

I don't rate Ed for his football brain but I have no fear he'd feck up the financial side.
So we buy in installments? That is the usual way isn't it. The only problem is when the big price player doesn't work out and you have to get a lot of money for them to pay off his former club. Is that how it works?

Reading the highlighted part in tweet, it looks to me that 258M was total cost of acquisition, of which only 102M is pending. Of that 102, 65 needs to be paid between 1-2 years and balance after that. It doesn't read we still owe 258M.

It's just standard amortisation. Every club does it. It's very rare for a fee to be paid in one lump sum, other than for buyout clauses.

To my mind, I think Ronnie to Real was the only in recent memory which has, and that was cos Utd insisted on it. Everyone else has paid fees in installments. It's why, despite ostensibly making a loss on Di Maria, we actually broke even because we only paid the first installment.

He's just mischief-making and drawing in the uninformed.

Yup, it's for the taxing/amortisation reasons, most of the clubs seem to operate this way, most of the big companies do actually.

As others have said, this guy knows exactly well what he's doing, throwing around big numbers, trying to connect dots that aren't really there, much ado about nothing really.

I get people being annoyed, and I get the negatives about going to France, but he's moving to a great city and will be paid big money. I don't blame him at all. Successful team that sooner or later will crack the CL, it's not exactly hard to work out why he'd go there.

He could play in Holland his entire career, and still earn more than most "normal" people, feck, he could play for Sheffield United, and earn more than normal people. If you're rated as one of the top talents, you should rather play for the best clubs in one of the top leagues, he'll be rich as feck at some point anyway.
And i don't buy the "but football players have so short careers" bs either, all they have to do is to invest the money, and they can have a good income from there the rest of their lives.

Yes, i think footballers could/should study economy on the side, to learn how to invest their crazy income, should have plenty time for it.

Edit: i doubt footballers care much for a beautiful city, what are they going to do? Go to museums, or watch the Eiffel tower every day? Can sit at home and play fifa in Hull or Paris

Seems like you're just making a lot of assumptions. "You should rather play for the best clubs in one of the top leagues" he's got plenty of time for that anyway, unless he suddenly turns crap, he'll probably join one of them next.

But their wives/girlfriends/families do

Also in regards to them learning the economy side, that's supposed to be what the PFA help them with, but I remember reading somewhere it's been failing

Why would we be reluctant to agree? Our player is suffering.

Yeah, it doesn't bode well for TFM if we are 'reluctant' to have him back, especially when he isn't making progress at Fulham.

It probably about some money. Fulham probably agreed a loan fee for the season and we dont want to give them a discount.. They'll pay up. We'll move on. No biggie

If he doesn't suddenly turn crap, he could do a Verratti and spend a significant chunk of his career there.

Become too expensive to buy for other teams, with high wages on top of that.

I'm sure that if they already have a girlfriend when signing for one of the top teams, they'll be super happy with their partner moving up in their career. Doubt they'll start crying for moving to Manchester, Madrid, München or Turin instead of Paris or Barcelona.

Swap deal and £50m should do the job.

You’ve got to be kidding? Absolutely no chance, Napoli would accept that fee for Koulibaly. They value him at £100M and selling him for half that price in January and receiving a crocked defender in return is just simply impossible to happen.

Actually none of those clubs are bigger than United. Barca are as big as us but the other 2 are small clubs in comparison.

That means feck all anymore. that other two have won more in the past few years than us,and are rich. That's all you need to know if a neutral player wants to move clubs.
