You have not completely given up faith in lindelof and bailly, Have you?
Not at all pal. As a club we should not wait around for our players to suddenly have a spark and become the next Rio and Vidic. We have done this before with Jones and Smalling. Bailly has had injury issues and been inconsistent. Lindelof has had 2 solid months. That does not warrant a guaranteed starting place in a title winning Manchester United team. What we need are defenders who are capable and consistent.

No rumors regarding United, I know we don’t have a permanent manager right now but us waiting for the summer to get the manager shows we have no clear direction.

Of course the manager should approve the transfer but the DOF (which we don’t have) or at least the board should be all over targets that go according to the club’s philosophy.

I we wait for the next manager to come and rebuid the squad we are going to have to wait another season to settle, and this is the sixt season we don’t challenge for a thing so a little bit of a hurry would be ok.

Surely us waiting until the Summer means that is the clear direction that we are taking.

I've said all along I can see Herrera going back to Bilbao. He's 30 next August and plays primarily as a box to box mf, there's only a few more years in the tank before his legs won't let him play that role. I'd look at replacing him with Barella or Pellegrini.

I think it'd be a travesty to sell him before we have a replacement that has settled in and displaced him from the starting XI. We need to progress by selling the weakest links, we don't have the luxury of selling starting XI players while taking punts on replacements.

If Fred or Pereira (or whoever else currently on the books) cannot displace Herrera by end of season then we should be selling one or both of those guys, while bringing in someone new and renewing Herrera for a couple of seasons. Then the new guy can try to displace Herrera. I'm personally more worried about a long term replacement for Matic because bone of the players we currently have can play in his position efficiently. Fellaini, Fred, Pereira and Herrera all seem better suited to b2b roles, rather than holding DM, and are therefore competing for same position.

Chelsea are really going for it aren't they? They've already got Kante and Jorginho. Add these two and that's a great midfield right there. And then there's loads of squad players there like Drinkwater, Barkley, Kovacic, Loftus-Cheek (injured) and Van Ginkel (injured). Bit jealous really. We could do with some depth in midfield. McT isn't good enough and Pereira and Fred need to step up. When one of Pogba/Matic/Herrera is injured we've got a problem.

I think we should strengthen. I have no idea of possible targets but it's clear that we don't have the depth, especially in midfield. As farfetched as it seems, our priorities should be the CL and top 4. With Chelsea getting stronger, they'll only be harder to chase. All we have to do is look back at what Liverpool did this time last year with Van Dijk.

I doubt we will sign anyone this Jan, probably leave it all till the new manager comes in in June.

Caught between a rock and a hard place really.

Shouldn't be buying players before a DoF and new manager are in place because it might not be the right player for them.

Should be buying players to stop us falling even further behind over the next 6 months.

No idea why we'd be after both Barella and Paredes. Both would be very expensive and are far too talented to be on the bench. Paredes is almost a carbon copy of Jorginho. He's a pure regista who sits deep just in front of the defense and recycles the ball. Not sure it makes sense to bring him in.

Barella is the one I'd prefer since he's much more versatile. He's like a pitbull. Perfect for the PL and reminds me of Arsenal's Torreira.

I highly, highly doubt we're after both. Even if Cesc and Drinkwater are both off.

Completely forgot about Leandro Paredes. He'd potentially be a good Matic successor.

Very true. Ideally we'd have a DoF by now but the fact that we don't doesn't mean we can't or shouldn't strengthen IMHO. The weaknesses in our squad are pretty glaring. No depth in midfield, no right winger, weak CB's and not one good enough RB. It just depends on how far the club is willing to go to salvage something from this season. If our competitors strengthen this month and we don't our chances of getting top 4 will go from slim to none. That's a decision the club can make in order to free up more funds for the incoming DoF but it would mean no CL next season thus less income. I think Woodward should sit down with OGS, Phelan, Marcel Bout(?) and maybe SAF as a consultant to decide these things untill we have a DoF.

How many midfielders they need?

Why we arent after Paredes is beyond me.

Offer from Chelsea for Nicolò Barella objectively difficult to reject (apparently exceeding £50m). For this reason, Cagliari accelerated for Nandez, while Birsa will replace the injured Castro.

We better fecking be on this Barella thing if the reported prices are true. Our cup game the other day showed us the grim reality of our depth in midfield.

We'd have no option, he can sign a pre contract for Bilbao at the end of the month.

Pellegrini would be a good long term replacement but, we might look at Pereira, Garner or Gomez to fill that role with them getting bits and pieces this season and then rotate with Matic next season, the season after being a starter in that position.

I'm a little jealous of how well Chelsea get their transfer business done in terms of efficiency and speed.

Every transfer window people say this but forget so many transfers they fail to complete or complete on deadline day. It's just that we read every transfer rumor related to ManUtd.

This is the reason why we should have appointed a DOF years ago. Otherwise, when a manager leaves, everything grinds to a halt until a new permanent appointment is made and you have no continuity in transfer strategy. Unfortunately, Woodward and the board continue to avoid/fail in appointing one.

100% correct. If we obsessed over every other teams transfer dealings as much, they would look a lot less impressive.

No need to be jealous of Chelsea folks, looks like they could lose their most talented kid to Bayern and Hazard to Madrid in the summer. Who cares about a £50m midfielder who could turn out just like Fred? We’re better than them anyway, this will be shown in the 2nd half of the season.

Exactly. For example, they wanted to sign Higuain, Rugani and few other players this season. In Conte's first season they failed to sign his targets and signed bunch of players in last few days. Obviously they do good business more often than not but I don't see them as some efficient machine.

Shameful of Chelsea of letting such a top English talent leave, but its hardly a surprise is it, the way they've treated their youth products over the last what 15 years is appalling.
