Both will/would cost a bomb, since both players were happy to stay and clubs didnt want to sell either. Five years ago, you would get these players with relative ease. Nowadays, it is very difficult with these clubs having more money and the sums going up exponentially.

Please don’t. Peaked already

Don't you think we could use his experience? Especially if we move on from Rojo and might be bringing in another young CB? I think in that position having at least one player with a bit experience can be vital.

I don’t think he’s really looked the same since his injury and secondly I’ve always felt that vertongen made him look better. My opinion of course.

I’d really rather that we invest in young players who already have experience under their belt like DeLigt, Skriniar, etc.

I personally think their hunger would outweigh any experience that an older CB would bring. For me, experience is important when you chuck a load of young players in from your reserve teams, like we did with the CO92

That's fair and I usually tend to like signing young players more than established ones. But if you look around Europe all teams that are winning or have been competing in their league have at least one experienced CB in their defence. Sergio Ramos next to Varane, Pique next to Umtiti. Monaco got better when they signed Glik. Chiellini, Bonucci and Barzagli, Thiago Silva next to Marquinhos or Kimbembe. Fazio and Manolas. Raul Albiol next to Koulibaly. Otamendi and Kompany. Boateng and Hummels, recently next to Sule. Miranda next to Skriniar.

Obviously Smalling could be that player for us, but I think we quite often need someone that is better on the ball than him.

I'd be staggered if we bid €45m for a player who hasn't kicked a football since October 2017. There's no way we're in for Ghoulam.
