"Jose Mourinho was told by Manchester United that the club would only sign a world-class defender of the calibre of Real Madrid’s World Cup winner Raphael Varane rather than compromise with a lesser light, despite the manager’s demands otherwise. United would have paid £100 million for Varane but the World Cup winner was never available and as the options were put to them over the course of a transfer window there were too many good reasons to ignore them."

Seems like PR from the club.

Mourinho wants the right player. Woodward wants a galctico. In other words, the money was there, but the decision was made above the manager's head.

United are on a hiding to nothing.
Mourinhos already had a few chances at signing the right player for CB so can you blame Woodward if he is hesitant about mourinhos choices for this summer

Yup. Was thinking the same.

If the manager had come out and said he's fine with what he has then I'd have accepted it. But him, Herrera, Sanchez...it's pretty indicative we've been fair (as fans ) in feeling our squad is lacking some quality. Actually, Matic said something similar too mid season didn't he?

ok lets assume Ed is hesitant about Jose's choice - Toby!, if Ed was a football man he would know Toby is and would be better defender than all our CB's at the club. So why didn't he trust his own judgement?

"Senior sources at the club claim the lack of activity was not a question of money but value, with few defenders on the market considered an upgrade on Mourinho's current crop. If Raphael Varane was available from Real Madrid for £100m, United would have been prepared to make the 25-year-old the world's most expensive defender."

Sounds like the good old "No value in the market"

You guys realise that all those 'stories' are made up?
It would be some coincidence for so many to make up the same story simultaneously. Of course it may not be an accurate portrayal but it's clearly the story someone in the club wants out there.

face saving isn’t it. Willing to pay £100m for Varan since he’s much better than what we’ve got but refusing to pay £50m for Sandro even though our LB situation is abysmal and he would have been head and shoulders above our current lot in that position, yeah right.

so not only did Ed mess up the transfers. We know have the same defensive unit add to the fact that they would be annoyed/demotivated because it would have been anyone of those who would have been replaced by the new signing!

"United have the money to do big deals. They were prepared to do exactly that to get a top player, which Varane undoubtedly is.
Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward would not have flinched had Real Madrid told him to write a cheque for £100m for the Frenchman"

Great perspective this gives. Clearly seems to indicate that the club don't agree with JM's stance of wanting 29 year old's at any cost. It also suggests that JM might not be around next season.

Alot of stories coming out regarding CB's. Either it is a briefing by the club, or the tabloids just can't wait to release non-stories with predictable headlines. I, for one, disappointed with this window (even though I am happy United got Fred and Dalot deals done early) not because of CB but lack of proper LB and RW.

Having said that, I wonder if Dalot would slot in that RW position? Joao Cancelo played as a FB at Inter (right?) but during pre-season (at least from the games I watched) was playing as LW.

I'm not saying I believe the reports above about having to nurture young talent with an eye on the short to medium term. But if they are true it is very hard to see how Jose is the manager to take us forward with this policy and I've always backed him.

Amazing isn't it? While the likes of Liverpool manage to sell their useless players like Ings who has scored like 3 goals in 3 years, we struggle to sell Argentina and Italy NT first choice players like Rojo and Darmian.
It's not like we sold Blind just recently for decent money.

The majority of people on here agree that the last thing we needed was another centre back. They also agree Mourinho should be getting the best out of our current attackers and selling martial and buying a non-world class 29 year old for 70m in Willian or Perisic is shortsighted folly. So what has the club done wrong exactly!?

Bailly, Lidelof, Jones and Smalling were set to be our roster of CBs this season. That 4 for 2 places, which would ordinarily be fine. The problem is that they're so injury prone, you need at least 5 options to get through the season. Mourinho is rightfully asking for another option. It's not an illogical request. As it is, we're going to have to keep Rojo as the fifth senior CB to provide cover. Not ideal when he's as rash as they come.

The £100m transfer kitty also applies to other areas of the pitch. Woody's stuck in a Football Manager headspace if he believes that superstars are the only worthwhile additions to the team. Jose's won the CL with lesser individuals who have adhered to his philosophy, so he should be afforded the same kinds of acquisitions here. You're handicapping him if you don't and that can only hurt MUFC.

On balance, Mourinho is a proven winner as a manager, but Woodward is not a proven winner as a football Chief Exec. So the latter undercutting the former is detrimental to Manchester United. If it were an experienced and successfull CE (like Gill), I'd maybe have a bit more sympathy. But Woodward's track record doesn't afford him that leeway. His failures are too many to excuse. Mourinho may have made some missteps as well, but he's made enough good decisions to be given the benefit of the doubt. Otherwise, there's no point in keeping him as manager.

Incidentally, I didn't want Mourinho before he signed. But whilst he's here, I'm going to back him as he tries to mould the team in his image. He's one of the best squad builders around. Even when his philosophy doesn't quite work, he knows how to get the right players in to fit any style. The next manager will do better with a Mourinho squad than a squad left behind by almost any other manager. Hell, even Avram Grant got to a CL final with one.

Did we even want a LB though? Mourinho said he expects Young to play 50 games. Maybe if he wanted Sandro the board would've pushed on with it?

Remember when Andre Gomes was the hot property a couple of summers ago along with his compatriot Renato Sanches? Both were thought of as the next big stars and were linked with the very biggest clubs around Europe.

Both have since flopped massively. Still, worth a punt for Everton I guess. Can't be worse than watching a miles past it Rooney struggling through matches.

Have to admit I thought Sanches last year would hav ebeen a great signing for us and kept sayin git and gettign slated.....in hindsight it appears rightly so

Hired Mourinho, if they bothered doing their due diligence they would have found exactly that so it doesn’t make sense to hire him and not follow his proven approach. Otherwise just sack him.

Who says we refused to pay £50m for Sandro? I doubt LB was high on Mourinho's list to begin with.

Although a lot of the list was underwhelming in my opinion....they are ALL better than those already at the club on the performances at least of those at the club, even Boateng (cant really include Mina as seen so little)

I wonder if the £90m bid for Koulibaily his chairmen mentioned was true, if so, definately us that made it

And Drogba wasn't worth his fee. And Essien. And Robben. And Carvalho. And Costa. And Willian. And Modric, etc, etc. All youngish players who weren't galacticos but proved to become top class, despite being overpriced.

If the club wants to get rid of Mourinho, do it.

But if not, back him to do things his way. It's a way that works.
