Didn't know much about him but looking at Wikipedia, his goal record is very impressive.
That's been edited. If he'd scored that many there's no way Atletico would've sold him or loaned him out as many times. Three or four years ago he was a big deal though. Looked like the next world class Argentinian forward. Never kicked on though.

Go down further and you'll see his real record.

Obviously a poor window, but how anyone can say spurs have had a better one is just plain stupid.

We've addressed our midfield with Fred coming in. Pereira is also like a new signing and if Sanchez brings his true quality to the side that will be a massive addition.

If we can get Pogba playing well along with Sanchez and Lukaku kicking on (as he has every year) we should at least be comfortable in the top 4.

Before anyone says it, no I'm not happy to settle for top 4, but spunking 50/60 million on Alderweireld wouldn't have made us title challengers either. Makes no sense to overpay for him now.

He was good at Villarreal but was poor at Atletico and really didn't fit into their style of play. Had loans at Sevilla and Valencia where he also failed to set the world alight. Not sure what goal record you've seen but he's generally hovered around 5-10 goals a season since Villarreal. I heard that he's also not the most focused and will shags anything that moves (Seville does have great women tbf). I think he may be too slight to really do well in England.

Yes prices have increased, but there has to be a limit to everything, a point at which you say, that's too much.

Is Maguire one of the best defenders in the world?

I don't think so, he's better than what we have, but should we have spent a world record fee for a defender on him, I don't think so. Evidently Ed thought the same, as did the majority of the caf.
It's not for Ed to decide. Mourinho is the expert on player ability.

Woodward simply has to pay, at worst, market rate. He couldn't even manage that much, despite having multiple targets to play off against each other.

I've worked in sales. I know that I'd have got the sack if I'd come out of my most important business period with a result as shit as Woody's.

Individual contexts are only so much of a defence. I couldn't go into school every day for a week saying the dog ate my homework. Overall results are what matters. United are a football team whose image and quality define their marketability. Profits are not seperate from league position. This window will adversely affect both in the long run. There's no getting away from it. It's a kick in the balls for the club and the owners.

2 out of 5 targets signed is not good enough.

Ah, I thought that was far too good to be true. Yeah his goal scoring at Villarreal was pretty good.

Was edited on Wikipedia for a bit. Now its been fixed.

It's a two way street, you could just as easily say that Jose doesn't know the market value, just what player he wants.

The market value isn't set purely by the asking price. If it was we'd all be selling our houses for a million pounds.

I work in sales, I often have to walk away from deals because the asking price is too high.

Jose and the scouts identify players that would suit the team, Ed tries to buy them, but if the asking price is simply too high, his hands are tied.

In my line of work if somewhere is asking too much I go elsewhere. But Ed is restricted by the list he is given. So he has two choices, pay way over the odds for a player, and set a precedent for the future, or walk away.

I'm not saying the window was good, just that you can't solely blame Ed for it, not least because we, as fans, know about 1% of what is going on, the rest is utter tripe made up by the press.

And it is precisely Ed's Job to decide how much we are willing to pay, once he has been given the list of targets. That is quite literally his job (or at least part of it)

We're in constant contact with agents and scouts, so most of the leads were warm.

If you had 5 deals to complete with 2 or 3 different warm leads for each deal, and you only completed two of those, you'd get the sack. Particularly if you left your contractor with three gaping holes in their organisation.

Mourinho doesn't decide on market value. Woodward does, because he's the money man.

Jose only says what position he needs filled and hands over a list (this has been explained by him and many other sources numerous times).

Ed couldn't complete the deals that a plethora of other team negotiators could. United have the money, so that's either because Woody did a worse job than them at gauging market value. Or because he did a worse job than them at negotiating.

 Fulham are having an absolutely fecking mental deadline day.

Chambers, Sergio Rico, Joe Bryan, Vietto and TFM confirmed with Anguissa on the way...

How much did Barca want off of us for Mina ?
What Everton paid don’t seem too bad..

That's way to simplistic though, different clubs, different players, different situations.

I'm pretty confident if I was given a list of 5 things to buy from a list of say 8, and the prices being asked were astronomical, I wouldn't be given a blank cheque book to ensure I got those 5 things.

If Ed had paid £75m on Maguire then he would have been pilloried on here, that isn't the going rate for a defender of his calibre, that is a world record fee for an above average player.

You can't compare Ed's job to yours, because whatever you trade in, I'm pretty confident it has little similarity to the football world, that lives in its own unique bubble.

Ed literally can't win on the caf, he overpays, then he's been 'bent over', he stands his ground, then he should be sacked.

The only way Ed satisfies you, is if he buys everyone on Jose's list, for peanuts.

Most people are laughing at Chelsea and previously Liverpool for the amounts they've spent on goalkeepers, you can't have it both ways.

Ed's job is to decide what makes the most financial sense for the club, when all things are considered. If not paying world record fees for defenders that aren't the best in the world makes the most financial sense, then that is what he will do.

You forget, this isn't the same as a normal job, where those above instruct you to buy xyz. Here Ed is asked by those below to buy xyz, whilst being instructed by those above to ensure it makes the most financial sense.

We don't know how long the lists were, who were on them, how much was asked for each player, how much we offered.... So we really aren't in any place to judge.

Obviously if he offered £20m for Alderweireld then he wants sorting out, as that is clearly out of touch, but if he offered £60m for Alderweireld and it was rejected that really isn't his fault.

I'm not going to reply again, I only have one post left after this, and to be honest we've probably derailed the thread enough as it is.

Lindelof was Mourinho's preferred option.

Yeah, I won't begrudge them Maguire actually, I didn't fancy him at all pre-WC.

Scrappy-do currently at Spurs who tore us a new one when we faced MK Dons though, I will forever begrudge them for that one.

You cmpared Ed's job to yours.

If you want, you can compare Ed's job to the job of other execs and chairmen in the football world. They've by and large done a significantly better job.

If the clubs of our transfer targets were demanding higher than market value, it's Woodward's job to bring the price down. That's what a good negotiatior does... that's what an experienced business man does... Woodward failed at his job.

The only way Ed satisfies you, is if he buys everyone on Jose's list, for peanuts.

Strawman.

Ed literally can't win on the caf, he overpays, then he's been 'bent over', he stands his ground, then he should be sacked.

Ed literally can't lose on the caf, he pays the going rate, then he's got the man we need, he walks away from a target, he's kept our transfer kitty secure.

You're making excuses for the sake of making excuses. This line of reasoning could be extended ad infinitum. Hell, Moyes could still be manager if you absolved him of blame for every single one of his failings.

Remember when Andre Gomes was the hot property a couple of summers ago along with his compatriot Renato Sanches? Both were thought of as the next big stars and were linked with the very biggest clubs around Europe.

Both have since flopped massively. Still, worth a punt for Everton I guess. Can't be worse than watching a miles past it Rooney struggling through matches.

The Ings deal is a 6 month loan then a permanent switch in the summer.
