Imagine watching our squad last season and not realizing we needed a LB, RB, and a RW. I'm convinced Mourinho has been told to get top 4 this year with what he has or he's gone and if it's roses with the squad next summer they'll actually spend.

Also it's weird that we suddenly stopped spending obscene amounts (City too honestly). Maybe the transfer bubble is about to burst and we don't want to be fecked financially or something. Damn I'm clutching at straws.
I don't think it's any of that. Most likely its either that A) the club hasn't been convinced by the valuation of Jose's targets. They haven't been as convinced by McGuire, Alderwerld, Perisix and Willian for 50-80 milion each, as they were with Lukaku for 80, Bailley for 30 or Fred for 45, for example. In which case I think Jose's targets needed to be stronger. We'd have gotten someone like Malcom if this scenario is true. Or B) that we've mostly got a stern NO for his targets.

So it looks like our summer will end with us having brought in Kepa, Jorginho, and Kovacic. Just as importantly, we'll have kept our two best players in Kante and Hazard. That's a huge upgrade in our midfield and potentially at keeper considering Kepa fits the mould of a Sarri keeper better than Tibo did.

Overall good transfer business. Biggest question now and what our season hinges on is whether the considerable upgrade in the middle of the pitch will make up for our relative weakness up top.

I think your season will likely hinge on how long it takes your squad to adapt to a very different style of football to that which they were accustomed to under Conte.

Sarri has historically struggled to implement his system swiftly (failed to win any of his first five games at Napoli) and the World Cup, Conte's late dismissal, a shortened preseason and Sarri's late appointment will likely conspire to exasperate the problem.

Strange move for Kovačić if he won't be a starter at Chelsea which I don't he will be.

Good point. Will certainly be teething issues. Not expecting us to shoot out of the gate. This season is all about transforming into an attacking side and snatching that 4th spot.

Exactly. I wouldn't be surprised if we finished miles outside the top 4 this season. Could sneak top 4 if each of our strikers hits 30+ goals. We're a team with no right winger and a fragile defence.
Oh please, that same team finished 2nd easily.

But he's so shit.

He's really, really fast....and that's it.
He's improved a lot since 2 years ago it seems. Last year he added quite a few goals + assists to his game.

And Liverpool have strengthened all of their weak areas and we don't know how Emery will fare but he's surely gotta be better than end of days Wenger plus they've also strengthened so we might be competing with Chelsea and Spurs for 4th.

And of course all of us will be miles behind City.

No Championship team is spending 30m on players.

Also, Jose has signed two centre backs already and doesn’t seem to fancy them. Is it really a surprise that United don’t want to sanction another big fee for the same position?

City didn’t have a problem giving Saint Pep more dosh to bring in more quality when his own signings weren’t cutting it.

They won the league by a country mile. Utd don’t care about winning the league, it’s obvious.

Been saying for a while we will get no one, Stone is almost confirming this, he has been briefed by Woody, all a bit 2013 no value in the market , whatever you say about Phil Brown or Pib De Brune as he goes by on twitter he had a great point the other day about the Glazers not wanting to sell as they are waiting for streaming rights to come into play- i think then we may start splashing the cash again, but until we have a change of stance on muck like Jones and Smalling, and just cut our losses - even if i means selling them for a quid each, then we are going to regress over the next few years.

Going to be a rollercoaster this year- ABU's chomping at the bit in the press, its up to us a fans to have a seige mentality of us against everyone and get behind Jose unlike the board.

Roll on friday.

Dont agree with that.

Its criminal were going into another season without a proper LB, RB and RW. We could have got Willian if we tried. We could have got Alex Sandro if we tried. Both would vastly improve the team. The value has changed completely with transfer spends.

Heck Everton just signed a CM for 50m!

You don't know that. Willian himself said he is happy at Chelsea and there were reports of Barcelona bidding for him. It would have cost us atleast 70 mill which I don't call value for money.

Mahrez was available. Zaha wouldn't be a bad punt either. We could have done with Jorginho as a backup to Matic like B Silva is to D Silva at City. Sandro was available, as is Toby for the right price.

Of course, there was/is competition for these players but if the club was ambitious and Jose was braver with his targets (Mahrez for instance would require man management to coax his best out of him as opposed to workhorses like Willian), we would be in for these players.

And we should have stopped trying to squeeze every penny possible for the deadwood to move them quickly. Have to take some hits to free up wages and squad space.

I think Mahrez was the perfect buy for us but I honestly think he wanted to go to City and we were just too slow, probably because at that time we were focussing on other positions. Zaha is not a player you win the league with but that's just my opinion. Jorginho is never choosing to sit on our bench if he can go to Chelsea instead. There were reports Sandro was available but we have no idea what happened. Maybe we were informed he doesn't want to go to us, or doesn't want to leave at all or 100 other reasons we don't know.

I liked it how you added Lee Grant to your list just to make a point, what ever it is. And yea, 'we MIGHT need more" to win the title this season.

What are you talking about? Did we not buy Lee Grant? How is adding him to the list "making a point"?

Think Wolves will finish top half. Spending insane money for a club of their status to ensure they remain in the PL.

I can get behind him if he doesn't make stupid "football heritage" comments and acts like he is doing a big favor by gracing our tiny club with his presence as manager.

Steaming rights?

Sounds like a journo trying to get his account pushed during the busiest few days of the year.
I could have said that ffs. The club with the biggest turnover in world football has dragged out negotiations for a defender until the last day..great deduction!
Definitely likely, it's just the line about "United have the money" and Stone being pretty close to United that made me wonder if someone well placed in the club wanted that message out there before anyone could suggest otherwise.

Bullshit. City have a bottomless pit of money. Pep wanted Sanchez, Jorginho and Fred, and didn't get any of them.

Exactly. City and Chelsea, and to a certain extent Liverpool are not afraid to spend money to win. And United is worth double these teams. We're the wealthiest team in the world and we have Smalling and Jones as our center backs, two 33 year olds as our full backs and literally no right winger. I can only foresee massive protests if this continues.

I always laugh when I read people expect protests cause we made or didn't make some transfers. That happens literally never.

We are sitting on 3 or 4 players that could potentially be hitting 20 a season based on their potential. I reckon Sanchez, Lukaku, Rashford and Pogba if he pays in behind the striker maybe are capable of those numbers.
We are, but they don't. How long to wait for Pogba to show us he as good as he thinks he is? Rashford, at the moment all pace and no footballing brain.

And if they were in same shoes as us with Alderweireld and had the defenders we had, they'd likely be reluctant to fork out £60M+ when he's available for £25M in a year too. City have a bottomless pit of money but even they have their limits.

What is bullshit about what I just said and how does what you wrote refute it?

Pep DID get to correct his signings, as did Klopp. Do Liverpool have bottomless money as well?

United are supposed to be this huge juggernaut in the market, according to the Vice Chairman himself.

Sure, Pep wants moreno signings, that isn’t the point is it?

Well said, ma youth.

Sure. But they would have probably gone out and spent 70m on Maguire the next day and got it done just because they can.

Let's see the list of 10 LB and 400 right wingers.

We obviously I'm not going to name 400 players. But try these for a start:

1. Dembele
2. Bailey
3. Pulisic
4. Maximin
5. Malcolm

(I could keep going but I'm sure it's pointless).

Left backs?

1. Tierney
2. Philipp Max
3. Dalbert
4. Gaya
5. Grimaldo

(again, there are many money but these are just examples).

Any of these players would have been easily purchased (except Dembele but Barca would accept 100m) at the start of the transfer window. Malcolm has gone but the point still stands. Why aren't we investing? I can only imagine it's the Glazers and Woodward yet again refusing to compete.
