If we don't sign Alderweireld/Maguire then it's clear to me Woodward just wants to piss Jose off, hoping he'll crash and burn and jump ship.

No way do we go from spending shedloads over the last few years and suddenly tightening the purse strings.

IMO these briefings are just playing chicken with Levy, we'll see who caves first come deadline day.

Yep Jose has his excuse now.

More like a genuine reason than an excuse though. I think we can all agree that if we sign no one the summer has been a bit of a shambles and the board are only aiming for top 4.

Can't blame Jose if he fails to challenge for the league.

Sounding like a briefing?
Sounds like a journo trying to get his account pushed during the busiest few days of the year.
I could have said that ffs. The club with the biggest turnover in world football has dragged out negotiations for a defender until the last day..great deduction!

Its fair enough, we made an enormous signing in January, and there really isnt a ton of value in the market. Its hard to justify spending 200 million on 3 or 4 players now that arent necessarily going to even get you 200 million back.

Exactly. In the last 8 months we signed Sanchez, Dalot, Fred and Lee Grant. We might need more but there just isn't any value in the market this summer.

Dont agree with that.

Its criminal were going into another season without a proper LB, RB and RW. We could have got Willian if we tried. We could have got Alex Sandro if we tried. Both would vastly improve the team. The value has changed completely with transfer spends.

Heck Everton just signed a CM for 50m!

Which is the sensible approach and is probably the main reason Mou doesn't get any of his wishes.
It would be a bit more sensible if we wouldn't have indulged every club, every player and every agent for the last 4 years. It seems a bit late to go back to "we'll try to be sensible in the market" ways after spending a bit over the top for 3/4 of the players we signed.

Again if you don't have the full confidence in the manager to back him then sack him. There is no point in half-arsing anything.

No Championship team is spending 30m on players.

Also, Jose has signed two centre backs already and doesn’t seem to fancy them. Is it really a surprise that United don’t want to sanction another big fee for the same position?
This is his third summer here and he has signed two defenders.
Two!
Feck me does he need a hundred percent success rate?
You would think he signed nothing but defenders rather than two defenders that cost less combined than two of our rivals spent on goalkeepers

Well that enormous signing better start delivering. Need around 20 goal from him for that price and those wages.
We are sitting on 3 or 4 players that could potentially be hitting 20 a season based on their potential. I reckon Sanchez, Lukaku, Rashford and Pogba if he pays in behind the striker maybe are capable of those numbers.

You would think he signed nothing but defenders other than two defenders that cost less combined than what two of our rivals spent on goalkeepers

He’s the one that said he would be happy if Young played more than 50 games this season. He’s given Valencia the captaincy, and signed Dalot.

Was anyone forcing him to play Smalling and Jones last season?

It would have helped if one of them was an established part of the starting 11. As of yet does that make 0% percent success rate?

I'm a little surprised that nobody went for him this summer. I think they will next summer, probably for three times what Wolves paid.
Yeah, agreed. Good player with a lot of potential. Maybe bugger clubs wanted to see how he does in the PL before moving in.

Mahrez was available. Zaha wouldn't be a bad punt either. We could have done with Jorginho as a backup to Matic like B Silva is to D Silva at City. Sandro was available, as is Toby for the right price.

Of course, there was/is competition for these players but if the club was ambitious and Jose was braver with his targets (Mahrez for instance would require man management to coax his best out of him as opposed to workhorses like Willian), we would be in for these players.

And we should have stopped trying to squeeze every penny possible for the deadwood to move them quickly. Have to take some hits to free up wages and squad space.

So the answer is what? Buy more defenders to replace Smalling and Jones which goes against what you said?
The ironic thing is, he could be forced to play Smalling and Jones this year due to our board fecking things up!

Who cares if we make the 200m back on players? We need to invest to win trophies. That's the point in sports. We already make money through commercial operations. But this will slip given the current lack of investment.

This is the Fellaini summer all over again.

I remember working late at a trade show on deadline day and checking my phone when i got back to the hotel at 1.00am to see we had only bought Fellaini. Nearly cried myself to sleep

The club actually believes Rojo/Smalling/Jones are better than Toby. I refuse to believe they are this stupid.

They're not football men so I wouldn't be surprised if that's what they think. We need a DOF asap like since yesterday.

He was backed. To say otherwise in nonsense. In my opinion we should get another, but to me it’s easy to understand why we wouldn’t want to pay an inflated few for another centre back when he doesn’t play the two we have signed. He’s spent a fortune here, and how many of the players he has got could actually be classed as unquestionable successes so far?

Bailly is. He didn't even have a history of injuries when he joined us so where the hell did that cone from :(
I'd say Lindelof is a success for 30m. If he joined Everton and played like that he would be considered a big success IMO.
30m is really nothing as we're seeing this summer, we sold Blind for 20m ffs.
I'm starting to think we bought Lindelof due to lack of funds available. He could be our only CB signing in two years and it was between he and Keane who went for 25 (?) Million. Maybe that's just where the board sets the limits on defensive recruits?
If its this hard to sign a CB i would hare to see our budget if we did sign Sandro.

These journalists are beyond inconsistent now, they're all just pushing out anything to get clicks/publicity now that we're nearing closure.

People give far too much credit to them, they haven't gone from knowing nothing all summer to suddenly knowing private conversations

tbh, don't care for signing a CB. if we were talking about a RW or LB i would be excited but every link i've seen has been with a CB, so if we don't sign anyone i won't be too gutted
