Transfer related news. I can't believe Liverpool have now outspent us. Crazy! So much for not buying one's way to success.

1- Their transfer business for this summer is over, while we will still sign one or possibly two players. In two weeks our gross spending since 2016 may exceed 500m!
2- Yes, net spending is what really matters when you sell your key players. Most of Liverpool's received fees come from the sale of Coutinho; arguably their best player in 2016 and 2017. It's another story when you sell fringe and youth players.
3- These figures don't include the cost of the signings of Alexis and Zlatan. Free transfers can be very expensive.

They haven't outspent us, it's not even close.

According to media here in Colombia, United are looking to sign Yerry Mina.

He is good, better than Maguire, but not as good as Toby. Defends well, score goals, but is a little rubbish in his close passing (that’s why Barcelona wants to sell him).

Net spend means feck all other than you’re better at selling than us. Both clubs spend within their means - united from sponsors etc and Liverpool from transfers received
When ours is as low as it is, it means FSG should be loosening the purse strings more than they are. We are spending quite less than "within our means".

Imagine if Madrid came in with a £150m offer for Pogba and we replaced him with Thiago for half the price. We'd have improved our net spend massively while having a similar level of team.
Which is why net spend tells a story but not one to be proud of.

Imagine just buying thiago without selling Pogba. That's what we're not getting.

No thanks. Don't think he's anywhere near better than Maguire and I'm not a big fan of Maguire.

No where near as good as Maguire in my opinion. I think Maguire will do well here if we get him.
Agreed. We've no need for another below average defender that is terrified of the ball at his feet. He's exactly what United don't need.

As other poster pointed out. The club financial health is not just about player transfer. Other incomes and spending is also huge part in which L'pool wage bill overall is pushing the the ratio of healthy.

Can't believe what I am reading he got Lindelöf and Bailly and now he wants to splash crazy ammounts on yet another CB. I mean Maguire is decent but if he wants him so much why not just offer Leicster some cash and send Jones the other way. Who the feck is going to be our RW we desperately need creativity in that position, this window has imo been a complete joke. Another season of two 33 year old wingers as full backs I guess, unless Dalot surprises us hopefully.

Reliable reports?

Maybe we are switching to a back 3? Bailly has a poor injury record and Jones is Jones so this may be what's happening.

I think the problema with our CBs is that they're injury prone. Bailly always injures himself when he's playing really well. I agree we should use Jones but Leicester might not want to take a gamble on a player who can't stay fit. Lidelof is doing better but I don't think he will do well next to smalling who is the only CB that can stay fit. Smalling always seem to have a brain fart in him and he needs another CB to lead. We do need a RW and I'm really worried about our first matches as we don't have a striker available.

Yes Jose, let’s sign a left sided player because we desperately need one of those.

Shocked at how many fans said they would be happy with signing Maguire. Hes the best out a bad bunch of english centre backs and IMO if United sign him thats just settling instead of going after top class players like we should be. For the money they would want for him he is not a big enough improvement on Bailey or Jones for me, or even Smalling. Club not showing good ambitions for the league / champions league by signing Leicesters CB.

I agree with a lot of what you said especially about Maguire not being good enough but most of the other top defenders in the world also came from "lower clubs". That alone is no basis for not signing a player.

Out of curiosity, what attainable defenders would you rather we sign?

Perisic is now a year older. Another plus in Mourinho’s book.

Nobody wants Savic, especially for big bucks, but that owner is DESPERATE to sell him and cash in on the semi-hype he has going at the moment.

Also, seems like we're looking at 3-5-2 with Maguire coming in if it's true. Maybe the Perisic links have legs, with Jose looking to play hm as LWB.

Bernard has numerous offers but Chelsea are favourites to sign him. He is available on a free transfer.

Fair point. I am mostly just annoyed with the "look at their gross spend!" narrative when so much of it is spent catching up to selling our best player every two years. I'd be a lot more excited going into this season with Coutinho added to this squad nevermind imagining we never sold Suarez and sterling. For me that is still a big difference between us and Chelsea/United/City in this regard that gross spend says nothing about. And not in a good way for us.

I can only assume the "race against time" to sign Perisic is a reference to him retiring, because like all our targets he's so fecking old.

If bringing Perisic and Maguire meant transitioning to 3 at the back full time then yuck. I can’t stand it, an utterly useless way to line up against the large majority of teams. They can keep it in the turtle slow Serie A league and international tournaments.

Years Mina is not better than Maguire. Euro suggestion. What he is though, is better than Smalling and Jones.

He's a giant with especially good technique. Can really dribble well for his size but is not a good passer. If United were better at getting rid of the dead wood bringing him in to take Smalling or Rojo's place would have been perfectly fine.

United really really don't need Perisic. Especially if we're planning to go to a 2 forward system. Even if Martial leaves there's more than enough to fill the two slots.

I don't understand the logic of buying him at 70m to play at wing back. Why can't we just spend that money on Sandro or Telles or Tiernay or hell even Ryan Bertrand. At this point even Danny Rose is acceptable for 30m.
