Maybe the manager doesn't want our CBs trying longer passes like that? Matic is the guy he bought in and he always comes short to take the ball off the defence. But if you want attempted long passes from CB, Lindelof was trying them for Sweden
Weak in the air. Might as well keep Blind.

Should we be after him for 70+ million euros? He's talented and obviously has great marketing potential but is he that good?
In todays market without a doubt. I'm not saying to buy him straight away, because Dortmund seems to be the right fit for him in the next 2 or 3 years, but he has bags of potential combined with a great character. He is a really humble guy who works for the team and also is able to decide a match on his own. I personally rate him higher than Dembele, who went to Barcelona for a lot more money. Not in every derpartment, because Dembele is a fantastic dribbler, but Pulisic in my eyes offers a lot more overall and especially in the mental aspect on and off the field. His last season wasn't his best, but considering his age and the season Dortmund had, it's understandable.

So, Liverpool are a selling club.
Spending to replace your best players being = buying your to success on the caf.

If anything it's a depressing stat. I'd be happier if we were anywhere near you in the net spend column. That would mean we had splashed the cash on a shiny new centreback, 10 and forward. Maybe even had spare change for making a mistake in the market without being set back too much from it.

Do you desperately need a CB though? Mourinho's pretty good at improving CB's and you've been pretty solid at the back under him.

I think we do yes. Literally none of our CBs are reliably consistent. Bailly is the only one who looks like he could turn out top class if he can stay fit. We have a good defensive record in spite of our CBs because of the support from Matic and our negative tactics. It's definitely a problem area for us. Maybe Lindelof will step up and have a good season after his good showing at the World Cup but it's not something I'd be banking on.

Makes sense. Even if he duplicates last season his value will only go up next summer. As much as everyone would moan about it, we should offer €50m plus add-ons to test them.
If I'm not wrong,he will only have one year left on his contract next year (unless he signs a new contract)
Actually it's a bit surprising that they are ready to sell him for 70,maybe he's unwilling to sign a new contract

Bobby McMahon reported this in January 2018.
Pulisic signed a new contract with Borussia Dortmund in January 2017 that runs through to June 2020 and it is estimated to pay $23,000 a week.

That could be why they put the €70m tag on him.

Jesus he's far far away from the finished product. Granted he looked good on the ball for England at the WC but look at the opposition bar Croatia. If he wasn't English half the fans on here singing his praises would be non existent.

He is barely even an improvement on what we have and is not a better CB than Bailey. Give Phil Jones a chance to cut out the sloppiness from his play and he'll be a fine defender to sit in next to Bailey.

£60m odd for him is laughable. People moan about the standard of players we have, signing the likes of Mcguire is exactly why. Compare him to the likes of Ferdinand/Vidic.

Show some ambition we're supposed to be the biggest club in the world. Mcguire is a middle of the table team player.

You cannot say 'he looked good on the ball but look at the opponents' and then mention Croatia. He looked good on the ball even against Croatia who became finalists. Our defenders dont look good on the ball against anyone. You cannot expect Jones to be given time to cut sloppiness out when he has had chances before and we have no time to waste. Jones is a liability and a walking injury waiting to happen. English or not, Maguire has looked good even before the world cup but being English (and having a homegrown quota) and 'premier league proven' pushes the price up as does having a good world cip campaign. players are worth whatever someone is willing to pay and its not your money so why do you care. 60m is not laughable, Van Dijk was 75m. All in all...in this market...its a reasonable asking price. Dont get me wrong, its high but not when considering the circumstances and climate of the market. Leicester dont have to sell, have just sold Mahrez, good season last year, good world cup, english and premier league proven in an inflated market.

Compare him to Vidic or Rio. Erm...Okay. He has great aerial ability like Vidic. He is comfortable on the ball like Rio but he is is alot younger than those guys in their prime which i guarentee is when you are remembering them from and is the basis for your comparision. He could grow into that level of player.

Show some ambition? Koubaliy, Skriniar etc are just as much of a risk as Maguire, if not more.

PSG need to sell. Evra and Zlatan seem to be indicating something big is in the works.

The only thing that springs to mind is Mbappe who wants to come play with his buddy Pogba.
That's some serious clutching at straws. But hey, it was confirmed by a fellow member's dad's friend as pretty much done a few days ago, so I'm in. Announce Mbappe boys.

Good post. We just need to get used to the prices as it’s not going to change anytime soon.

Net spend means feck all other than you’re better at selling than us. Both clubs spend within their means - united from sponsors etc and Liverpool from transfers received

Besides we already asked about skriniar - not for sale. Someone, probably us, had an 89m bid rejected as well for koubilay. I honestly think we’ve just gone down our list of targets and we’re not at Maguire

Exactly. Liverpool's net spend is low because Barcelona had £200m sitting in their pockets and Liverpool were lucky enough to have a player they wanted.

Imagine if Madrid came in with a £150m offer for Pogba and we replaced him with Thiago for half the price. We'd have improved our net spend massively while having a similar level of team.

Looking at it from a broader financial perspective, United remains a more profitable club than Liverpool. So not only have United not spent as much as Liverpool on transfers (based on the timeline of the tweet I posted about transfer spend), But also it is important to note that transfer spend per $ of club profit is much lower too.

Last I checked United's wage to turnover ratio was the lowest in the league.

Proof that we can and should spend more on transfers and wages. And we can do so responsibly.

That bolded is quite often ignored. Yes we spend a lot of money, but we could actually spend more as we have a healthy amount of profits every season.

The board could very easily justify spending more money for 1-2 seasons to build a proper team and balance the books in the coming years. But they insist on spending a consistent amount every year. Basically they are happy with maintaining a specific level and don't want to spend more to improve.
