Fred is a box to box midfielder and we don't have any cover for Matic, unless Mourinho trusts in McTominay to fill in there.

I am hoping this is the case, I don't think he is good enough to play anywhere else for us if we are aiming for trophies. But as a number 6 and man marking important players he is a very useful player.
 
I feel bad for Kovacic, always in the shadow of Modric, for both club and country.
We should help him out. A bargain at €50m.

He is far to good to sit on the bench for us.

The player that's keeping him out of the R.Madrid XI is Casemiro. The player that would be keeping him out of hours is Matic. He's about as likely to displace the former as the latter, with the more likely scenario being him warming the bench for either team. I don't really know what's hard to understand about that either, but here we are.

I think it's far more likely to replace Matic than Casemiro, who is entering his prime. And I think he could fancy his chances against Fred, who isn't exactly a proven world class player like Modric and Kroos. But each to their own I guess.
 
I've not seen much of Kovacic but I thought he was known for picking up the ball from deep and dribbling up the field, is that right? Doesn't sound like a Matic replacement to me.

If we don't pay that and atleast try to get him on board, there is something wrong at the club. If he chooses to go to some other club that is fine, but not trying would be criminal.
 
It would be criminal not to be in for Kovacic.

Whoever is going to sign him is going to sorted for next ten years.

Yes that's right - he breaks up play quite well too. So essentially, exactly what we have bought Fred for.
 
Kovacic would be a great addition to our midfield. However, I doubt he would want to move here if he's looking to be a guaranteed starter. He certainly isn't going to displace Pogba or Matic in their respective midfield roles. So he'd be fighting it out with Fred for the other midfield spot and I wouldn't think we would have paid all that money for Fred only for him to become a rotation option. That said, all the best teams have got intense competition between top players for positions.
 
Herrera Matic Fred Pogba Kovacic will be a very versatile midfield.

We have to get the young Croatian from Real.
 
Maybe we should see how Fred gets in before spending another 50m on a CM. We have more pressing issues that money could be spent on. I don’t see Jose completely ignoring his POTY In Mctominay so soon either.

We need depth along with quality. I would rate Kovacic higher than Fred because he played brilliantly for Real whenever given a chance.

Liverpool did the same by adding Keita and Fabinho.
 
If we could buy Kovacic, and we really should try, I don't think it would be to warm the Bench, I would say our strongest midfield 3 would eventually be Kovacic-Fred-Pogba, and with Herrera & Matic as competition we could finally dispell the thought of using Fellaini once and for all.
It is impossible to know how well Kovacic and Fred would link up but it could give us the defensive stability to give Pogba the freedom he needs to flourish.
 
If we can get Kovacic we should definitely do so, he can rotate with pogba and fred, hasn't he also been used in the casemiro role at madrid? You don't miss out on players of that quality and price, would be madness.
 
Juan is gone if Barca are interested. He’s been decent for us since being here but not sure if he’s going to be in our future plans.

We will always have Juanfield!

Keita and Fabinho will both be starters for them though. Clubs don't play £40M for a player only to have them as a squad player not long after. If we're signing another midfielder it'll probably be a cheaper squad option but I think going after a CB and Bale would probably eat up into the rest of our transfer budget.
 
before we even think in reinforcing our midfield with Kovacic, we should first think of filling the gaps in right wing, left back, and central back. Then if we have the time and money and the luxury of reinforcing the bench, we do so.

This is the verbatim reply from a Juan Mata confidant on the suggestion progress is being made in a potential deal for the United forward to join Barcelona:

Talk of Mata going to Barcelona and people genuinely believing it.
