All I've got from this window so far is West Ham and Inter are trying to sign every player available.

MEN have got that Fred as the replacement for Carrick, but it would make sense that Fred, seeing as he is a box to box midfielder, is Fellaini's replacement.

I guess MEN feel that a replacement for Fellaini will need to be over 6ft. Against Chelsea, Mourinho mentioned that without Lukaku and Fellaini we lacked 'presence'. Bringing in a tall player, who we could bring on and occasionally start to give us that presence, both defensively and offensively, would be an advantage.

Players like Talisca, Pellegrini, Sergej, Rabiot, Loftus-Cheek, Dendonker would be ideal.

That said, we have a player in McTominay, who, since he's joined our first team squad, has been brilliant, in my opinion.

At 6ft4, I don't see why he couldn't replace Fellaini. He's physical, works hard, gets up and down the pitch and is tactically very good.

Then the addition of Fred means we've got that conductor in midfielder.

To me, Pogba, Matic, Fred, Herrera, Lingard and McTominay are enough midfielders going into next season.

Pogba/Lingard
Fred/McTominay
Matic/Herrera

Suppose it all depends how Fred turns out. I’d he hits the ground running and complements Pogba & Matic (assuming we’re playing them as a midfield 3) then it’s all good. If he doesn’t, we’re light.

Matic will be gassed by Xmas especially if Serbia stay in the W.C. we need another midfielder.

Herrera can cover Matic, he had his best season playing as No.6.

We also have a 3rd cover in Fred, Pereira, McTominay and TFM if needed.

Cause the path to the starting XI is more open at United? He'll be in the same situation he finds himself in Madrid.
Well yes? Are you trying to tell me that we have a better midfield than Real?

How did you infer that? Logic can't be your strong point. I'm saying we have better players than Kovacic and he wants to play. Ergo it's not good for him to be here any more than it is to be at Madrid. He'd still be 4th/5th in line.

We shouldn't have bought Fred if this lad was available.
I get your point... if Kovacic is leaving Madrid is because he wants to play more. The problem is that he would be in a similar situation with us. I hope he doesn't sign for City or Liverpool.

BTW, Thiago is also available.

If we don't make an attempt to sign him now it can only be described as criminal or complete ineptness from our part.

No not at all. Transfer dealings don't happen like you are ordering a takeaway. If we were to attempt to sign Kovacic it would have already happened or been in the works. It takes a few weeks minimum and can easily take longer for a signing to get done.

Furthermore, he wants more game time which he won't get here. He would effectively replace Fellaini as a squad option since Fred has already bought in to be a first team player.

We can always bench Fred and deploy a midfield of Matic, Kovacic and Pogba, Mourinho did say we'll buy 2 CMs if Fellaini is off. £50 mil for a bench warmer would be excessive given that we still has have so many holes in our squad.
Thiago's past it imo. Was supposed to be the next midfield maestro but hasn't fulfilled his potential. He's a very good player though and wouldn't mind him at a resonable fee.

Has Kovacic? I could have told him how it would turn out at Real. Always been overhauled on here.

You're right Fred hasn't done anything for us yet. Or we could have a squad of good players playing in rotation like all the other top tier teams .

You are right, Mourinho said that. Let's see what kind of player he wants.
So, who do you think is better... Thiago or Kovacic?

Pogba and Matic would probably be regular starters. Kovacic and Fred would be fighting for one spot and given the fact Kovacic wants regular playing time, Mou would have to promise a him a regular spot rather than a squad player. Hence Fred would be benched.

Tbf Kovacic has hardly played for Real but whenever he has looked brilliant. He was highly rated at Inter Milan and was exceptional there. But you're right hasn't set the world on fire in La Liga kinda hard to that when you've got Modric and Kroos ahead of you though.

Both are quite similar in the role they'll play of a deep lying playmaker but I do believe Kovacic has a much higher ceiling and could go on to become one of the best in the world in his position. Thiago would be obviously a good buy but he's pretty much hit his peak.

I reckon Kovacic probably wouldn't leave Real he just wants more playing time. Modric and Kroos aren't getting any younger, Real would be daft to let Kovacic go.

When did he say that btw? Was it before or after McTominay broke into the team as a sub?

We also have Pereira coming back, and if he's ever gonna become a United player it has to happen this season given the fact that his contract runs out next summer. I dunno if we have an option to extent though.

All this being said, it would be nice to buy another established midfielder. Or, maybe not established, but someone who has played on a higher level. But there are still several positions where we need new players, so the focus would probably be on defence/attack (although Mourinho said he wasn't gonna buy anymore attackers).

The last position they need to reinforce is their midfield.
They have problems in their attack especially with wingers but if they let Vidal and Thiago go, then maybe

They are smart buyers. They could also sell Thiago. Vidal has had injury issues.

Kovacic would be a dream.

If we go with a 3 man midfield then he, Pogba and Fred can share the two #8 spots.

Fred might even be able to play as a #6 against some teams, he did it back in Brazil.

I think my logic is fine, thanks. The path to our starting XI is obviously more open because he has a better chance of displacing one of our current starting midfielders than he has at Real. I don't know what's hard to understand about that.

Getting Kovacic would be great. I don't think playing time issues will be a problem. I think he will play more here than he did at Madrid. But I genuinely want cover for Matic though. If we can get only one additional midfielder, I'd prefer that being Thiago rather than Kovacic. If the reports of the prices are true (50m for Kovacic vs 70 m for Thaigo), I'd hope it's Thiago.
