No he continues to this day to close up his angles when playing. I can’t see him ever being top class as he’s not a natural defender and is not blessed with physical attributes like a Stam.
Let's see how he gets on with Sweden during the World Cup I guess. He is first choice right?

People who expect us to sell deadwood like Darmian and Blind for £20m+ are having a laugh.

The Germans are stupidly protective of their league

You can see it with most of the German posters on here too. It’s a bit overboard. I don’t know where it comes from, though. Is it cultural?

Small man syndrome.

The german league has not got the pulling power that the other big leagues have, bayern aside. And even then players from outside germany will not always choose bayern.

Being protective of it ensures that it keeps its current stature, which is less than than spain and england but slightly above france.

I want to play this game once

Spanish deny their physical & financial massive doping

Italians always think they are still in the 90s

English are utterly deluded with the PL actual value

Dutch are still in awe of their distant Cruyff past

Portuguese exploit their South American connections

French are racist and do not understand football

The English and Dutch are bad but I think the Germans are the worst. It’s how personally they take it, I think that sets them apart. It’s so offensive to them.

Last pre season and in August against Real Madrid and later against Bournemouth I was highly critical of Viggo but for totally different reasons then you. To say he don’t have the basics isn’t fair in my opinion. Supporters have every reasons to be disappointed about his first season, especially in the game against Bournemouth. In that game he made some “golden blunders” who cost us goals and that set the tone among our supporters.

After that some of you just waited for the next mistake to happen so you could justify your initial opinion. It’s ok because for different reasons we all have players we like or dislike. But if we are going to crucify one of our own players then do it for the right reasons. Let me explain.

If you have time please search on YouTube and see some clips with Viggo playing for Sweden in the WCQ games against France, Netherlands and Italy (x2). He’s not spectacular but he’s far far better in these games then he ever been for United. Especially against France he had a monster game where he really looked like the real deal. The difference between the Victor you know and the Victor that Mourinho and staff saw in these games was mostly confidence related.

His biggest strength regarding defending is reading the game and act on instincts. Similar to Rio but on a lower level. When he’s filled with confidence he mostly do the right things in the right moments. He’s vocal and a character who takes command. He was also a player who raised to the occasion, until he started to play for us. Maybe playing for United is one level above his comfort zone, maybe not. Future will tell.

I understand those of you who have giving up on him. It’s fair to say his first half of last season was disappointing. Not only was he nervous but he looked weak in the air and uncomfortable in one to one defending. But from my perspective his shortcomings was mostly because of nervousness and not mentally ready for playing in the PL. In this league it’s all or nothing. Hesitate and the sharks will eat you in one piece.

The minute I saw the look in his eyes against Real Madrid and Bournemouth I knew that this will be a uphill battle

My opinion is that his basics are there. Maybe he’s a little bit weak in his upper body but the gym can fix that. I hope the coaching staff will help him in that department. I also hope he will shine in the WC and regain his confidence. If he doesn’t believe 100% in himself then United isn’t the right place. Sorry for long post. Maybe the wrong thread.

I’m not following you. I’m watching him and he doesn’t do the basics right. Dropping, moving the line (looking across it) opening up, passing on or going with the man are all lacking in his game. I don’t need a mistake to see this I see him doing it all the time. I don’t rate him but he’s a decent player just not top class. Plus he has nothing in Rio that’s just absurd (John Stones I see the similarities on the ball but then that’s it) but Lindelof (and I wish Im proved wrong) just hasn’t got the proper basics right to be a top class defender.

Feels like every summer we are linked with half the world, but this summer has been kinda quiet. I seriously hope we don't go into next season with Young as 1st choice LB. The Alex Sandro speculation has gone dead silent.

Way to give an initially weak post validity by proving their point

It is also the fact that someone has thought it a good idea to take over-30 Ashley to the World Cup after a long season and the manager then saying he could play 50 games next season. This isn't a prime Harry Kane we are talking about.

No way we are selling Blind at this ‘quoted’ value...typical Utd deflation when it comes to us selling players!

I understand the tabloids/click bait articles propagating that narrative but surely ‘value’ is driven by market forces and if we continue to sell our players on the cheap, does that mean we cant negotiate or our players are not desirable?

Getting rid of Blind and Darmian for a combined 30 million would be good. Put that towards a LB we can actually use.

If we got Alex Sandro on LB that would be even better. I just want a steady fullback that can actually defend and offer bits to attack. Not just one or the other

10 mil for blind is disgrace. 25 is minimum value for him. I hope he stays

You have to differentiate between when a player is wanted or not. If he wasn't for sale then yeah 25m+ but as he is not needed at the club and they are happily letting him go then what can you expect?

Quiet? We are 3 weeks into the window with 2 signings done and dusted.

Seeing as Blind has only played 360 league minutes last season and with one year left on his contract any amount of money is a good amount of money.

Prepare to be disappointed mate.

He doesn't play, isn't wanted and has a year on his contract.

The benefits of him staying are that he gets to earn a nice wedge for doing nowt of value.

The benefits of him leaving for a measly £10m is that we get £10m and it frees up a slot and wages for someone that's actually wanted and useful.

You can only command a fee if you are not 100% trying to ditch a player.

While I agree with your post (regarding the small man syndrome and some German posters) I don‘t think that the tweet regarding Bale falls into that mould.
The Mirror writing something about „Bale saying no to Bayern“ when the German journo seems to know that there were no talks.

Using Blind and Lindelöf to fund a good portion of De Ligt's transfer fee plus wages would be good business. A super talented player like De Ligt under Mourinho's tutelage would be world class for 10-12 years at United. De Ligt should be right up there with Dalot on Ribalta's list of quality young prospects United should be buying at value prices.

Really interested to see what other targets we're gonna go for this window, and if Ribalta has any other surprises on his list. We'll probably see more of his works in the coming seasons.

As a centre back where he has played most of his career here....he is

Actually its the centre back position where he has seemed most comfortable for us and had his best games for us under LVG . He has done mostly average in left back position . He was most underwhelming in the defensive midfielder position . His lack of pace really hindered his chances but he hasn't been as bad for our team as people make him out to be .

With a year remaining on his contract a fee between 12-15 million pounds will be a fair price for him if he remains in the EPL . The price will go down a bit if he moves to another league . I do feel he will be most comfortable in the Italian league since it feels more his pace . He will be a shrewd signing for Inter if they pursue it . But I do believe negotiations won't be quite simple owning to the hostilities from the Perisic bid last season . Also they have FFP issues too so they will try to lowball us .

This is the thing when you’re not comfortable, then you starts to over complicate simple things. I agree with you that sometimes with United he looks disoriented, his movements isn’t synchronized, but that’s what you get when your focus isnt 100%. Being nervous creates distractions. Like I say maybe playing with United is above his level, future will tell.

Regarding the comparison with Rio was about reading the game. If you have followed Sweden in the WCQ games then our discussion would have been different.

Another thing that’s separate playing with United and his NT is the level of criticism. Timing is so undervalued. A good start and the player has time on his side. Often the first impression follows you for a long long time. Viggo started bad and he have to live with this criticism and try to prove his doubters wrong.

I'd be surprised - probably more in the region of £70k which would still be prohibitive to a lot of teams. Think most of our defenders are on £60-80k/week with the exception of the converted wingers who are on a bit more.
To be fair was signed as a starting centre mid. I think he would be on decent wedge and it's tough to shift him right now
