Mourinho still rates Darmian quite highly given the number of games he's played over Blind.

Evra lost a step in his last couple of seasons here and doubt he'd be happy in a cover role given its one of the reasons he decided to leave in the first place. Not really good enough to be a starter anymore, even with the options we do have.

Don't think Jose rates either of them to be honest. Plus Paddy was done in his last season and half here so other than sentimental reasons Paddy should be nowhere near our starting 11. I'd rather see us bring back CBJ and give him a chance.

Rather not see Evra back as a player.

Most the people wanting him back will be the first ones to jump on his back after his first mistake.

I doubt he wanted him at all. I should imagine Fellaini was well down the list of targets but when it looked like he wouldn't sign anyone, we panicked.
Absolutely spot on we wasted months chasing people we were never going to get ie Bale and Fabregas and by the time we realised that we had no chance we panicked and signed Fellaini at an inflated fee at the very last minute .
Most of course blame Moyes when in my opinion we were in that instance paying the price of having a new and inexperienced Chief Exec

Ugghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.......

Look at Woodward's track record in closing marketing deals before he took over the Chief Exec role, look at the evidence of him closing out mega money deals with world class footballers (regardless of how they played) after Moyes' first window. Look at how Moyes finished the most recent window with Defoe as his only recognised striker, look at Moyes' failure as a manager in the appointments he's had since.

But no you're right, it was probably Woodward's fault.

This was all Moyes. We would have got big players, but the Project Moyes had little to none pulling power.

If you look back at that particular transfer window ( and that is the only one I'm talking about ) .It was before Moyes had turned into the Pariah he had just in fact signed a long term contract . Not only had the most successful manager in history left , but also one of the most influential , experienced and respected Chief exe also left .
now Woodward was and is a fantastically astute businessman man but there is a hell of a difference between closing commercial deals and negotiating the transfers of ego maniac footballers it was bound to be a learning curve and Woodward as we can see now has learned well .Moyes at that time hadn't had the chance to break the club in fact he came in with the blessing of Sir Alex ( could you get a better reference than that ? )
I am in no way defending Moyes but the fact is , it is the managers job to identify the players ( Fabregas , Bale , Kroos ) and the Chief execs job to negotiate and deliver them which at THAT time and in THAT window Woodward was all over the place .
So for once let's put the Moyes hating glasses away and just consider that in this instance maybe he wasn't entirely to blame .

Which is fine, except that you put all the blame on the "new and inexperienced Chief Exec" even though there is no proof of this.

Based on the success (or lack thereof) of both parties in subsequent transfer windows the most likely scenario relates to Moyes not knowing his arse from his elbow. I don't hate Moyes either, the job was too big for him (as it is too big for most managers). He admits he approached the job under the impression he had 6 years to get it right.

Woodward has not shown anything before or after to suggest he is not deserving of the benefit of the doubt.

I too thought for most part that it was woodward who was at fault for a bad window until moyes himself told us the targets, now i would say especially what woody has done since then, he clearly isn't at fault.

Lets look at moyes's targets, Bale was never going to be a united player, he was always going to madrid nothing any executive or anyone else can do.

Kroos, in moyes's own words he had agreed a deal for next summer, can't fault woody there if lvg rejected the player.

Cristiano Ronaldo, unless your CEO's name in jorge mendes no ceo in the world could have gotten utd ronaldo back.

Fabregas, another one who was never going to come. He said so himself, again can't blame woodward for that.

Herrera, this could be partially blamed on woodward for not closing the deal earlier, but again he was dealing with bilbao one of the worst clubs to buy from, even likes of bayern have had trouble dealing with them even after cajoling them and paying big money for martinez.

Over paying for fellaini, can't blame the ceo for this when manager set him ridiculous targets and shifted to fellaini when those targets couldn't be signed.

Very interesting. Big loss for Genoa, that.

Juve seem to continue the Bayern approach of buying anyone half decent in your own league to both strengthen their own team and weaken everyone else. Commendable approach, wish we could get away with it.

He's a central midfielder, I believe.

Could still indirectly replace Evra. Asamoah, who is looking past it in central midfield after all of his injuries, could be pushed down to backup LB.

Txiki et al attempting to hijack the deal but Srna might be the backup at RB Barcelona will acquire

I'm pretty sure United have bought quite a lot players from english midtable clubs.

In recent years our approach has gone away from that. I can only think of Shaw as a first team player signed from a Premier League club since Fergie left.
Schneiderlin. Hasn't worked out for him but he was signed as one.

And the player who gets booed every time he makes an appearance.

Apologies. Forgot those two existed for a moment!
You could also add Mata I guess. Anyway I'm the last who'd criticise a club for that anyway. I just think it's completely normal for top clubs to buy players from smaller clubs in the same league.

Dario Srna? He's been around for ages! Also been a loyal player and didn't leave Donetsk in his peak so not sure why he'd leave at 34?

Also not sure why Barca would want him at 34, surely you've got a youngster to fill in the gap there once Roberto is out?

P.s if Evra does come back as a player here, let's just hope he doesn't play when we're up against Everton and Lennon is on the right.

I am not sure you really want Evra here. He was instrumental in the CL final run two years ago, but he's clearly not the same player now. Darmian, for all his faults, is right now better.

I'm fairly sure I used to sign Srna along with Morten Gamst Pederson and Kim Kallstrom for every team back in Championship Manager 01/02! He must be about 56 years old?

Old, absolutely but the winter cupboard is bare for RBs. Aleix Vidal is not a viable option and Sergi Roberto is a makeshift RB. If rumours are accurate, Cancelo is the primary objective for summer and for now Lucho wants a veteran RB who can provide depth in the crunch stretch

Suppose that makes sense to get an experienced man in for a short period of time, just wouldn't think he'd leave considering he'd have had opportunities to do so sooner in his career, used to be a pretty handy player (haven't seen him for years).

He's fast though.

Jorge Mendes to Sky Sport "Madrid have an offer from China. 300m€ for Cristiano and 100m€/year wages"

If I were them I'd take that in a heartbeat, but I doubt Ronaldo would.
I imagine the club would be delighted. The 300 are fine, but they should have offered 150 first . He is too young and ambitious to go to China, but in June 2018 or 2019 ...

I'm starting to think this Chinese thing could totally ruin football.
