Thank feck Wenger denied it. Jeez, van Gaal was a nutjob wasn't he? Vermaelen and Debuchy as top defensive targets.
In fairness to van Gaal, the Debuchy one was in the January window when we had our injury crisis in defence. Obviously wouldn't have been the best idea still but I don't think there was ever confirmation of the proposed deal being a permanent one and I suspect that's probably why Wenger vetoed it also.

I too thought for most part that it was woodward who was at fault for a bad window until moyes himself told us the targets, now i would say especially what woody has done since then, he clearly isn't at fault.

Lets look at moyes's targets, Bale was never going to be a united player, he was always going to madrid nothing any executive or anyone else can do.

Kroos, in moyes's own words he had agreed a deal for next summer, can't fault woody there if lvg rejected the player.

Cristiano Ronaldo, unless your CEO's name in jorge mendes no ceo in the world could have gotten utd ronaldo back.

Fabregas, another one who was never going to come. He said so himself, again can't blame woodward for that.

Herrera, this could be partially blamed on woodward for not closing the deal earlier, but again he was dealing with bilbao one of the worst clubs to buy from, even likes of bayern have had trouble dealing with them even after cajoling them and paying big money for martinez.

Over paying for fellaini, can't blame the ceo for this when manager set him ridiculous targets and shifted to fellaini when those targets couldn't be signed.
Herrera is the one that is least of all Woodys fault, he seemed happy to make the deal go through no matter what, and Moyes himself said he decided Herrera wasn't worth the price of the release clause and cancelled the deal. When LvG came in, Woody asked him did he want Herrera(and Shaw), and when given his blessing had the deal sorted incredibly quickly, paying the same release clause Moyes felt was too salty.

He's a nailed on starter for his current club, one that plays CL practically every year. I'd doubt he'd give that up to be Costa's backup. Not after his experiences with us and Madrid.
Unless Atheltico use the Griezmann money to buy Costa back, Chelsea make a nice price and buy Chicarito.

If I was a Chelsea fan and they replaced Costa with Hernandez, I'd fecking explode with rage. That's almost as bad as when we replaced Ronaldo with Valencia.

Chelsea don't want him to replace Costa; they need Hernandez to be his backup because even with Diego there, right now they're quite thin at the #9 spot.

Furthermore, Chelsea don't need to sell Costa to make this happen. Oscar's sale will make it so that money's not a concern.

Chelsea could buy Hernandez 10 times over, without batting an eyelid, that much is apparent but I was responding to a specific post about Costa going back to At. Madrid and being replaced with Hernandez, which would be one of the most stupid transfers in football history.

What's the deal with Batshuayi?

Gonna be the next Lukaku in that they just don't give him a chance whatsoever at Stamford Bridge?

They play 1 striker and have the best striker in the league playing there!
Recently they had Costa missing for a game against Bournemouth. Chelsea decided to play Pedro up front instead (or maybe Hazard, I am not sure) despite having Batshuayi on the bench.

First things first: It's BILD. You better have a sack of salt with you because it wouldn't be enough to just take a grain.
Secondly: Leverkusen aren't doing well this season. It's all but certain they'll play CL next season.
Thirdly: Chicha hasn't been in form for a while but is on a big contract (for Bundesliga club standards). He isn't a striker for combination play, he needs to get chances created for him and Leverkusen haven't been doing that well in that department. OTOH, although I haven't checked his numbers, gut-feeling wise I'd say his conversion rate is far from impressive. He seems to complain a lot on the pitch and doesn't ooze confidence.

I wouldn't be surprised if Chicha wants to leave and/or if Leverkusen want to sell him. However, I'd question the Chelsea interest, i.e. because it's BILD claiming it.

Might be wrong but I'm sure I heard on the TV the other day he (Chicharito) hasn't scored for something like 14 games. I absolutely love the guy but he really might just be one of those players that defenders can work out after a year of playing against them.

I wouldn't be bothered if Chelsea signed him, I don't think he's that good.

No ambition then so it's no loss

I don't think there has been a Benfica-player in the last 25 years who would turn down United to stay at Benfica. So either this quote is made-up or it's one of those "I sa7 what I have to say to save face in case there is nothing in the rumours"

Means nothing. Could well move in the summer and nobody would remember what he said. He obviously wont say he wants a move

Leverkusen as a whole have been in awful form and have provided zero service to him and the other strikers on the team these last few weeks. Injuries have been extremely disruptive to them.

In particular, losing winger Karim Bellarabi at the start of the season was devastating. He, along with Hernandez, is their best player, and those two have a great understanding.

The good news is that he's due back after the winter break. The goals for Hernandez will start flowing again soon enough. He hasn't been "figured out." Ffs, the boy's a great striker, but gets zero respect more often than not.

It does, but at least the quotes were reported by MEN, Mirror, Mail and Metro. Not the most reputable papers, but still.
Also an extra 10k per week would probably resolve the issue. Which, if the quotes are genuine, would be the main reason for saying what he's said, especially from the agents perspective.

This is a touch off topic, and may have no bearing on the Semedo rumours, but we really need to get out of the habit of just chucking money at players who don't want to come otherwise.

We're an attractive enough proposition, we pay well above the going rate for wages, and we shouldn't need to woo everyone by just chucking more money at them.

It will be a slow process bringing our wage structure back under control and flogs like Ashley Young, Fellaini, and Rooney need to go to make it happen, but I think its something we need to press on with. We want players who want to be here and for whom the high wages are a bonus, not players who are only here for the pay cheque.

Yeah that's fair enough (apart from the quoting a phrase I didn't even write), I haven't watched much of the Bundesliga this season. Just turned a Leverkusen game on the other day and was surprised at his lack of goals considering last season.
You've got to admit though, from scoring 20 in 45 in his first season at United to just 9 in 38 in his last one, and 26 in 40-odd games for Leverkusen last year to just 7 in 23 games this year, you can see why I said he "might" be a player that defenders can work out.

He scored twenty in his first season, had an injury-riddled second, but then came back and scored eighteen in SAF's last season with us.

And, yes, he only has seven so far this season but few have pointed out that, in fairness, he broke his hand right before the season opener and missed a few matches, played with it only partially healed and in a cast for a few weeks afterward, and was being provided no service whatsoever all the while.

And even then he's still the team's top scorer thus far.

It may be best to quality control some of the tweet sources by focusing on journos rather than third party aggregator accounts.

You're right. Checked that it was reported by several English newspapers so trusted the quote to be true.

First things first: It's BILD.

Bild has been a very reliable source for most Bundesliga clubs in the last few years. Haven't followed transfers which are Dortmund related, but they get most things right with Bayern, Hamburg, Bremen, Köln, Wolfsburg etc.

I beg to differ. Even at the clubs you mention, BILD reports a lot of BS, or we have a very different definition of what 'reliable' means.
If whoever leaks information from your club to Hamburg's media (IIRC, you're a HSV fan, right?) and that includes BILD, or when until very recently Klaus Allofs chats to all local Wolfsburg papers, Kicker and BILD, it's IMHO not BILD that is reliable but that some attention-seeking folks cannot keep themselves together.
Bayern seem to have tightened up roughly since Hoeneß was jailed, similar Cologne since Schmadtke has been in charge, and in Bremen I don't find BILD reliable but 'Syker Kreiszeitung'.
In Leverkusen, I find Frank Lussem (spell?) from Kicker quite reliable but not BILD. Most reliable however is a particular user in a Leverkusen forum. :D
