- Barkley is just 22. He gets better every season. People doubting his quality and potential need to have a word with themselves.

- Barkley is English. People under estimate the value of having a British core.

- We don't have a decent no.10 in the squad. Rooney is shot. Mata is shit. Januzaj has a bad attitude. Pereira is unproven. Hererra doesn't have enough weapons to be a 10.

I've always been curious about this, the 'English Core' and it's effectiveness in building great teams, or whether it's more a symbol for pride and patriotism.

Who was the last dominant team to have an English Core at the very highest levels of the game? (Barca, Bayern, Madrid level - which is where we're aiming to be)

Most likely us in the 2006-2010 era but even then Rooney, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs, Ferdinand, Neville were the British Core. Ronaldo, Tevez, Vidic, VDS were also equally as important if not more important though considering Ronaldo's contribution to the team and Giggs & Neville particularly on the decline.

When the EPL was the best in Europe United, Chelsea and Liverpool all had strong English cores. Modern day Bayern have a strong German core and Barcelona have their Spanish core. It absolutely important IMO.

As I have said before in this thread, if we sign Barkley we know he will settle into the league and area because he has been here all his life. No Di Maria style sulking or Depay style strugging with the pace of the league. Given the problems we have had with foreign players in recent years it baffles me that people overlook this advantage that would come with signing Barkley.

It is not just about getting the core. If we want to fight against the likes of Barca, Bayern, Real at European levels, we definitely need to have a talented lot. If English football are unable to produce the same level of talents like those in Spain or Germany (whatever be the reason for it), then there is no point in trying to go with an all English core. We will still not be in those levels.

German & Spanish players tend to win things more regularly than English ones at national level, so surely there's a difference in terms of quality of players?
There's no point having an English Core if the players just aren't as good.

I personally don't think Barkley will improve us or is worth £45million.

Lukaku will be gone in the summer - whether it is to us or somebody else. I just can't see Everton selling both of them in the summer - and possibly Stones as well.

Villa lost Benteke, Delph and Vlaar this summer - look what happened to them.

I disagree with both of you. I think Barkley would improve us and considering his age £45m seems about right in the current market. It is worth remembering that he has about as many as goals and assists this season as Martial and in less games.

He does hold on to the ball too much but I am sure that a good manager like Jose can improve him. He is totally in the Mourinho mould of player as well. Athletic and mobile.

No point of having a bunch of talented Europeans/ South Americans, if we can't perform in our own league & fail to qualify for Europe.
I believe the value of having an established core of homegrown players is vital to any top side & looking at the most successful team on the planet, this is what happens.
There are some exceptional British players out there, could form the core of a really exceptional side.
Seems some of our posters are scared of our English club team, having too many English players....

Everton will be absolutely kicking themselves they didn't take the £40m from Chelsea last summer for Stones. I'd have snapped their hand off

100m Euros and van Gaal , fecking hell, what is our target? We gave him 250 and are playing Europa league next season. Are we fighting relegation next season?

Sack the cnut and let Mourinho spend double that you greedy bastards.

Bollocks anyway

Worst part is Everton would fleece us to the extent of €80m for Lukaku alone and we still need a winger and center back unless we generate money from selling the likes of Jones, Rooney and Rojo.

Crikey! If we are hoping to boost our funds by selling that lot it won't buy a decent CB's left leg.

And probably a goalkeeper with De Gea probably going for whatever nominal sum he put in his clause

And the third Matt Law story:

1. Arsenal want Morata, Xhaka and Manolas (also wanted by Chelsea).
2. Rosicky, Flamini, Arteta, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Walcott and Gibbs all for sale.

I'd take Oxlade in a heart beat.

English Morata and Spanish Welbeck in one team.

Really? He's an absolute crock and isn't even that good when he does play - he went through the whole of 2015 without scoring or assisting a goal and he had plenty of appearances in that time.
