IIRC the asking price wasn't the issue but rather the wage demands was too high. Also consider he had back problems so that was a wise decision at that moment.
Nah, that was what English media made out of it but that's bollocks. Gündogan's camp leaked the agreement with United to the media but United was shy to pay the demanded 15-20m (Euro that is) when Schweinsteiger became available. A move I fail to understand TBH because BFS is a lot older, injury-prone and most likely demanded a bigger pay cheque than Gündogan.

I got the impression we were always concerned over his back problems and the nature of nerve issues like that being unpredictable in the future. I think LVG viewed Schweinsteiger as a safer bet, despite his age. Especially if he does prove to be a stop gap while we give Gundogan another season to prove his fitness.

That's what I'm hoping for at least!

I wonder why it wasn't possible to negotiate a deal with a basis fee plus multiple bonuses, e.g. additional €100,000 per every appearance, every round of any European and cup competition etc. Dortmund sold a few players - admittedly youngsters or fringe players - with such schemes. Therefore I think if United really wanted, it would have been possible without a big financial risk.

As a bonus, Ilkay would have gotten a full dose of LvG's risk-averse philosophy early on. :D

Perhaps, but we would have expected Carrick to be regularly injured or rested from the dreaded 'red zone'. If Gundogan aggravated his back problem and had a long lay off, we'd have really struggled for cover. If he proves a season of strong fitness then it would make sense to replace Carrick with him.

Not a popular opinion on here, but I think Shelvey is a pretty nifty player.

Are we actually fecking signing anyone? Looks very unlikely, doesn't it. Depressing stuff.

Considering LVG has said he won't and never normally does in January (forgetting about Valdes), then I'm going to hazard a guess that we won't sign someone.

Oh technically he's at a level where he should've established himself as a regular at Liverpool but his attitude blows, he's half the player he should be.

It's a sign!

I would have thought we'd have signed someone by now, before we have 2 games in 3 days
Need an attacker at the very least -- I'm not expecting Messi or Neymar, but the likes of Mane should be attainable. If not him, then feck it, go for Pato or whoever. No back-up striker, absolutely ridiculous.

I can only remember reading that but whatever. But as stated there would also have been concern over his back problems at the time but hindsight and all that..

Not Pato! He'd be an awful signing
I'd be willing to take the chance. Offer him a one year contract, see how it goes. Can't be any worse than some of our other players. He's also only 26. Has been wrecked by injuries, but also been in very good form lately.

I doubt LVG cares. He really appears to be defeated. I still don't think he will be the manager for too much longer. I just hope it's sooner rather than after the window shuts because then we have no options.

I'm not sure how they got that from that picture. To me it looks like someone has called Shelvey a nasty word and he's seeking comfort from Curtis who is giving the perpetrator a "disappointed rather than angry" look.

Our side is capable of reaching the top 4 without adding new players IMO, we just need to get rid of LVG.

We've opened talks for Atletico Madrid's Saul Niguez, says the Mirror. Apparently he has an £18million release clause.

The Saul Goodman stuff got really tiresome really fast

Sané has told his friends that he's leaving Schalke in the summer, according to Bild.

In what world would we need Mendes to bring Mourinho in? Jose is sliding off his seat he's so wet for the United job. If they want him, offer him the job but keep that hyena away from the club.
