Lets not forget, if we miss out on the champions league again we lose 200m ( around that i think) from the addidas deal. Which is a huge incentive to spend the cash now on players with release clauses.

No we don't. Not next season, anyway. Two seasons into the deal, yes.

Another year out of the Champions League, while far from ideal, is most certainly manageable financially.

Missing out on champions league football again would absolutely be a disaster. Not just because of the financial side of it but I'd imagine LGV would be unsafe in he's job and surely the name of the club will only carry us so far?

Not being in the CL for another season will affect the calibre of players we can sign. We got away with it last season as the players will have been assured that it was a short term situation. Another season and they might not see it that way. Then it will be holding on to the best players. DDG might not want to play for a team who has stopped contending. I can understand why we might not sign someone now. It is the fact we didn't strengthen the defence and get another midfielder in the summer. Then on top of that we are a recuperation home for injured strikers.

No, if we miss out on champions league this season and then again next season.

Oh ok i misunderstood then. Well, it will still have a massive impact on our ability to compete for the top players, when we already have the location disadvantage. Not being competitive would set us over the edge and it would take monumental overspending to get back to where we were 3 seasons ago. when we were already passed our sell by date in the champions league.

Are we really considering not finishing top 4 this season... c'mon our injury record cannot be as bad in the next 6 months as they have been in the previous. Finishing out of top 4 is out of the question even if we don't make any further signings.

I seem to recall us saying the same last year and then at the turn of the year we got worse, despite spending money, different circumstances ofcourse but its dangerous just to assume we will finish Top 4 just "because". We had our injured players back last time out and lost at home, its a funny old game.

Yep. I said this last year for sure.. 'Rooney + Van Persie combination hasn't lost yet. Mata coming in, injuries back. We went on a 6 win run last month...' - I think the biggest difference is the players trust in Van Gaal though, which is why I'm not putting much stock into it. But it's definitely tempered me somewhat, and I'm not letting myself get carried away.

It's definitely not out of the question.

To be honest, prior to to the last couple of weeks I thought that we would cruise into the top 4, but the last couple of performances, especially Last Sunday, have got me concerned. We are not playing well, Arsenal are going to be strong contenders and it would be ridiculous to write Southampton off just because they're Southampton. It's going to be a massive battle to get there and we certainly aren't guaranteed anything at all. I actually think that us or Arsenal will miss out. Southampton have been fantastic and they've got a decent set of fixtures coming up where I can't see them dropping many points.

I don't agree with that, primarily because the majority of the players at the club, even the best ones, can only go down from where they are now.

Van Persie is approaching 32 and isn't picking up wages anything like the ones he's on now anywhere else. Likewise Rooney. Mata's stock is as low as it's been in years. Falcao will probably get a good look in elsewhere but his current form wouldn't be missed here. Di Maria is the only player I could envisage getting a move to a bigger or better club. Even then, I doubt he'll get anywhere near the same wages unless he fancies the move to Paris.

De Gea is probably the only worry. Every single other player is fighting for his place here, not the other way around.

As for players not coming, I agree that we will lose a little traction, but if players buy into the new-found United project and get the chance to triple their wages then we're still a very attractive option for many, many players.

I expect it will be very tight between Arsenal, Saints, Spurs, Liverpool and ourselves for the remainder of the season. A top 4 finish for United is a long way from guaranteed.

Form across the last 5 games:

Southampton: 13 pts
Liverpool: 11 pts
Arsenal: 10 pts
Tottenham: 10 pts
United: 6 pts

Must be depressing being a Villa fan. Don't know what's worse, being in for Scott Sinclair or not being able to pay 3 million for him.
He was really good for Swansea and no doubt has talent. When the other option are Gabby, Andi, N'Zogbia and Richardson who have all been shite for a while now any new winger will be a welcome addition. They probably know they can get him for much cheaper too so there is no rush. City don't want him and he's not played in so long no one else is going to be jumping at him either.

It would be of no use if we can only get good but not great players now, who'll we have to replace anyway in a short space of time (or not be able to get rid, and have them take squad space).

We have too many players at the moment who aren't quite what's needed (most of our squad :nervous:)

Bringing in more is just digging the hole deeper.

On the other hand, we're in serious danger of missing the CL.

Rock on the left...Hard Place on the right.

Woodward enters revolving door... a blur of motion....Mighty Mouse emerges....we buy the right players at the right prices....the club is saved!

Too much to hope for, perhaps.

Aye, but will signing a centerhalf who is good but not top class make all the difference? That's not even counting the possibility he will need time to adapt.

I'd say Van Gaal's stubbornness regarding formation and also the way he positions a couple of players are a bigger problem right now than our centerhalves.

Clyne Hummels Varane/Marquinhos Pogba Reus/Bale That would be a perfect summer and would sort our team for years. The only dilemma would be if we didn't sign Falcao we would maybe need another striker

Throw in Dybala or Lacazette and there ya go! I'd also change out Bale/Reus for Depay as that seems more likely. Plus the one player that will more likely be signed over them all is Strootman.

Yes and Van Gaal is no Moyes

It's very quiet on the twitter front. Can't see us adding to the Valdes signing this window. Better waiting until the summer and getting the players we want/need instead of buying for the sake of it though.

If we do wait to the summer, I hope we get the players in early and give them a full pre season together. With no World Cup this should be easier to do.
