Was he not giving out only a few weeks ago about our transfers?
Was just thinking the same thing. He's a bit awful at times and pretty kneejerk(he's no more insightful than your average poster on here). I was always worried with the whole talk about the 'class 92' and managing United one day as it appears they (bar Butt and maybe Giggs) are just really fans of United, rather than people with potential for future management in football.

Still I guess there plenty of time left.

I think Scholes asked for a few world class players (albeit Hummels, Kroos, Fabregas) but I think signing AdM, Blind and Falcao has sufficed.

At least he's being consistent and didn't come up with the whole "identity lost" thing.

What's this whole "identity lost" thing?
Have you not been on the Caf after deadline day? After the sale of Welbeck a couple of ex-pros, Phelan etc said because we signed players for big fees and sold Welbeck (it had more to do with selling Welbeck IMO) we had lost our identity etc.

Caf exploded and a couple of threads popped up here - "we're just another big club" "who are we?" or something along those lines etc....comparing us to City/Chelsea/Madrid etc....lots of emotions, debates....e-fights etc...

So every now and then you'll hear someone refer to "lost identity" etc.

Anyway, not really the thread to discuss this.

I talked about the loss of our identity on deadline day, before Phelan et al came out of the woodwork.
Arsenal have more of a British core than us at the moment, ffs. And most of those are waiting to be pushed out of the club. I'm not sure what our identity is anymore.

And I wasn't the only one

Hugely reassuring. Those thinking, and in some cases hoping, that we would be turning our backs on youth development can pipe down a bit now.
Exactly. It was so obvious to me that this burst of investment was a temporary investment needed to get the club back in shape.

LVG has said multiple times that he was hired to advise the club on its youth policy too. In order for there to be a future for the youngins we need to get back to winning trophies. Otherwise United will fall.

Everyone and their mums were saying we lacked quality last season and now we do bring them in and get rid of deadwood, it's "who are we."

Frankly, ridiculous.

Indeed. Huge financial power + commitment to youth development = Winning + Joy :D

Spot on.

The suggestion that you can keep pace with Europe's big boys with young players either from your youth ranks or bought on the cheap is naive in the extreme. Arsenal have tried to do it for years and won nothing. Even Wenger seems to recognise the need for real quality in the side in key positions now.

There exists a bit of a myth that there was a "united way" in recent years - largely based on the one-off influx of great players from the class of '92. The reality is that they provided a bedrock of a side but were supplemented with some expensive players as well. Had those players come through the ranks at numerous other clubs no doubt Fergie would ahve tried his best to hoover them up and buold a side that way in any event.

Its great when young players come through, but what matters is whether they're good enough. No player should get any preferential treatment because they're from the youth team - you need to earn your place because ultimately its all about winning.

At times the club cant do right by some it seems - buy quality and your abandoning the past, don't buy any quality and you're penny pinching. This is the right way to go, and to be honest its obvious - buy well, develop well and you should do very well.

We probably would have said the same against Burnley, it's never quite that easy when you have almost a new team.

I think Herrera, Blind and Rojo will make a real difference to our play... I think we will crush QPR on Sunday.

If I remember rightly, LvG said that he had to get the club back on an even keel again before he would concentrate on the youth deveopment side of the club. He was never going to neglect it. It just wasn't the priority at the moment.

£5.2 million (?) is less than I thought, though. When he was first laid off papers were saying it would be around £7-10 million!
Alex Buttner and Bebe have paid for that £5.2m

So much for Strootman being a nailed on January signing.
I'm happy with the squad as it is, and think we'll be fine until next summer to be fair. I also think van Gaal will have another cull next summer too and get rid of more dead wood and maybe some big names too?
