Team Aldo
Thibaut Courtois
While still quite young, the Belgian has been one of the best keepers in the world for the last couple of years, even the best in the opinions of some. A towering presence, standing at close to 2m tall, Courtois has been as solid as they come in the successful spell of Atletico under Simeone. An excellent shot stopper with brilliant reflexes (
see his triple save), he is equally good in his anticipation and coming out for set pieces and crosses to claim the ball. More than anything, it's his commanding presence in the box that has led to him getting so much praise at his age.
Albert Ferrer
A constant fixture on the right side of the defense for Barcelona throughout the 90s, Ferrer's achievements include a European Cup and 4 Ligas in a row. A key member of the dream team, Ferrer was a pacy right back with tremendous tenacity and a mean tackle. Going forward he was well capable of whipping in some fine balls into the box as well.
Sergi
Ferrer's teammate in the same dream team, Sergi run up and down the left flank all day long. Blessed with great pace, stamina and acceleration, Sergi was a great asset going forward. But it wasn't just his attacking side that merited a place in the team, defensively he was a more than capable marker often winning the ball with some quality slide tackles. And just like Ferrer, extremely good at putting in a great cross or linking up with the attacking players.
Carles Puyol
Admittedly I've been a harsh critic of the Spaniard over the years, but in this setup he gives me exactly what I need. Pace, aggression, reactions and ability to go toe to toe with the pacy and tricky forwards,
shown here in brief. There's no need to start counting his achievements and waste your time, he's won it all while being a key player for both Barca and Spain over the last decade. Multiple leagues, multiple Champions leagues, multiple Euros and a World Cup with a winning goal in the semi final, well displaying his towering presence in set pieces, both in defense and attack.
Rio Ferdinand
The ideal man to round off the defensive line and cover up for any limitations Puyol is bound to display, Ferdinand for me has been in the top 3 CBs if you count the last decade or so, basically the time frame which he has spent as a regular. During his peak, he was simply phenomenal, and while his qualities like pace, ability on the ball and excellent concentration were vital, it was his exceptional reading of the game that made him defend against top PL and CL strikers without dirtying his shorts. Again, countless trophies while being at the heart of them all.
Claude Makélélé
The British media might have gone over the top by naming the role of the destroyer as the Makélélé position, but that doesn't take away the levels of consistency and efficiency he reached in playing that role. Always a vital cog and turning good teams to successful teams, Claude was what Zidane would refer to as the engine of the Ferrari. A brilliant man marker, tackler and a great reader of the game, Claude was the one who provided the solid platform for several attacking players throughout his career for club and country.
Patrick Vieira
A colossal midfield general, Vieira was capable of dominating midfields like few others. A true box to box player, Vieira was technically excellent in his skills on the ball and often made a surprise run into the box, but more than anything his engine, work rate, physicality, determination and leadership qualities is what made him a true great of the game. It's been almost a decade since he left Arsenal and they are still struggling to replace him, like we are to replace Keano, and there's no surprise that it is difficult. Going toe to toe with Keano during the great rivalry days, Vieira was immense in driving his team forward to trophies. As well as with France, where he was as vital as anyone else in the 06 campaign, in particular his 10/10 performance against Spain where he almost single handedly took apart a midfield of Fabregas, Alonso and Xavi.
Toni Kroos
Completing the midfield trio is the still quite young in the game, Toni Kroos. But his age hasn't stopped him from stepping up in big games and proving a game changer. His exceptional vision, passing and control of the tempo has seen him being deployed both as a creative CM or AM. He tore apart Madrid in the CL semi a couple of years ago. Along with his great technique and creativity, he also possesses a wonder strike, an example of which we saw recently against Arsenal. One of the best talents to come out of Germany from as far as I can remember, he is the guy needed to use the platform provided by the two Frenchmen and cut opposition defense like a knife through hot butter.
Eden Hazard
Like Kroos, he was a part of our wet dreams when we almost bought him before he went to Chelsea, and while he took a bit of time to settle, he has been their key player, and the most influential in attack this season which has seen them stay in the title race throughout the season. A versatile attacking player, Hazard on his day can beat defenders like they don't exist. Stand out pacy dribbler, like we saw when he tore Zabaleta a new one a few weeks ago, his close control and acceleration can be devastating. To top that off he's got a dangerous shot and the ability to find the net whether it is a simple tap in or a 30 yard screamer into the top of the net.
Thierry Henry
For me, the second best striker after Ronaldo of this generation, Henry was a complete package at his prime at Arsenal. His goalscoring stats are extra ordinary, and he crossed 30 goals a season five times, which was a massive deal till the two numpties made a joke out of scoring records. Not just that, he racked up 92 assists as well while his time at Arsenal, underlining the fact that he more often than not would end up influencing the game in one way or the other. Blistering pace and acceleration, close control and as clinical as they come in front of goal.
Samuel Eto'o
Looking for a number 9 to complete the attack? See no more. The Cameroon international has showed his quality on the biggest of stages. A back to back treble winner! Eto'o's composure and finishing is vital to finish off the attacks in the team. As everyone else, technically great and versatile enough to roam across the front line allowing others to assume the central role, if needed. Oh and like the "theme" of the team, comes with serious, serious pace to burn.
