Riquelme for 27 mill? That is surely up there among the bargains of the draft.

Don Balon winner AHEAD of Ronaldinho in his peak 04-05 also got "Most artistic player" ahead of Ronaldinho as well in 05.

He is one of the most underrated players in these drafts though, the player everybody loves but rarely gets on the winning sides in these matches.

For me he is one of those players whos passing range alone had you mesmerized.

- He has never played a big role in a successful team
- you will always have to build the whole team around him
- once you do that he comes up against a DM monster, you are fecked. Compared to some one like Laudrup it is easier to believe that Riquelme would be shut down

I'd argue the opposite. Riquelme's range of passing as you can see allowed him to step down in to the central midfield and he'd not lose his ability one bit.

So if he would be up against Rijkaard he'd just go enter the midfield battle from all over the pitch. A Zidane, even a Laudrup are more prone to have to fight it out with the DM.

That's not how it works though. You will have to set up the team to be flexible to account for this to work. Not to mention if he is man marked, the guy would just follow him anyway.

I am not saying him not getting as much credit is right but I can see why it happens.

Thought you were arguing for him having got enough credit/selling price.

No doubt you have to have forwards who can handle Riquelme not being present in the central areas in those cases. But at the same time it adds some flexibility to play him slightly lower as well.

Anyhow the midfield list is probably the least coherent by this point. So bargains are bound to be made there.

Yeah RC is a bitch that way too. Told you from the get-go that he'd be underrated and he exceeded those expectations. Had little credit at all for his abiltiies.

I think Gattuso and Pirlo leave him fairly flexible as regards other midfielders as long as they've got a good workrate and they're halfway useful on the ball.

People need to watch more Fiorentina from the 90s and then they'll get what the hype is all about. I've said it before and I'll say it again, he was responsible for Batistuta's level in a big big way. Actually, for those cracking their heads, that Fiorentina had quite a handy player up top right as well... Stam wouldn't want to come across him again, I'm sure.

Sure, don't get me wrong, that's a potential final winning pair right there and I don't see many knocking around at 90M. Scholes-Keane currently standing at 120M. The cheapest combo of the 208M Barca trio was worth 119M too.

Great buy.

The comedic part about it is of course that I think Batistuta is rated very highly and rightly so. For some reason people's memories must have shut out RC's part of it.

There's little consistency in why someone is rated low as well.

I think one thing definitely going on is people are being cautious about finances and would rather see managers exit the competition for players in a certain position than keep bidding their ways into unwanted deals they end up walking away from anyway. It's all quite destructive and I guess people are less bothered about quality differentials beyond the top tier and more concerned about keeping finances within a certain ballpark.

Seems to be settling as better ones going for 25-30, above average 20-25, average with some rep issues 15-20 and unproven 10-15. I don't think you will see a defender over 30M again.

My issue is I don't believe Batistuta deserves to be rated that highly by people who don't rate Rui Costa. It doesn't stack up, can't have seen peak Batistuta if they don't rate Rui Costa.

Yup like I said the inconsistency part. Took me ages to understand who was overrated/underrated. Not that I know it now either completely as I don't have that natural feel for it.
 
The challenge is to get players where they rightfully belong. It takes its toll though :boring:

Materazzi-Cannavaro was IMO better than Cannavaro-Nesta ever managed to be.

If anything there aren't enough of the "Materazzi's" being picked so far, but hopefully we will see them soon.

I think being smart you pull a Balu and pick up a pairing where one of them was relatively cheap.

The Materazzis are the sort people will be hoping to pick for 10-15M. Rugged cnuts no one likes, zero romance, but effective. Actually, I thought Terry would have ended up in that group, but it seems some are persistent :lol: It won't work and I don't really see why you would give yourself the grief of sticking up for John Terry.
