Transfer fantasy draft

In the WC/Magyar one I got Chilavert because he could really come off his line, play ball and start attacks with one of his long rangers. Last time out I had Lama -who was a beast aerially and had excellent reflexes at point-blank range- to make up for Koeman and his various partners not being towering defenders. Casillas would have been really fishy there I reckon, even if his roster is far far FAR superior to Lama's.

I actually rate Friedel higher than Valdes as a keeper, yet I wouldn't dream of playing him for Barca. That's the sort of scenario where I would go "sorry mate, you really fecked up your keeper pick" and assume a goal will come from that misfit.

That makes sense mate. I do think managers will start emphasising their keepers more soon. There's been times where there's been a clear disparity in quality between the keepers and it hasn't even been remarked upon, which is crazy given the minute, anal level of detail we'll go into dissecting full backs etc.

Sent. I kept the keeper on the bottom as I was the away name in the fixture. Please start the game whenever you and MJJ find it convenient, Annah. Thanks.

Keepers being ignored hasn't always been like that. Sure, it doesn't impact a game as much as it should, but a big part is how managers go about it. I'd say over the last six months or so people have fully embraced "keepers don't matter" and acted accordingly, particularly blatant in an auction format which is so keeper friendly. It's ridiculous that people go for any old keeper and aren't willing to pay a few bob on top for the right one. I always invariably go for a keeper that suits my defence and overall playing style, and certainly consider it when asssessing teams (although more often as a punishment for getting the wrong keeper). It's not uncommon that I will assume a goal or a half goal for either side on that count.

I tried to bring keepers into discussion in the WC draft but everyone said that it did not matter

Aye, I think you had Barthez many moons ago and his erratic nature and tendency for the odd brain-fart probably cost you a couple of votes.

Why is Neville Southall overlooked for worse keepers in these drafts all the time ?
In fairness during the 50s draft he got picked - one of only 8 chosen from the entire decade.

I remember picking him once in a draft down in the newbs. It was one player per nation so him being Welsh was an advantage.
Aye, on checking he was also picked in the all-time nations draft in the mains as well. Fat fecker's had plenty of recognition.

Just worked it out. It probably was a mixture of not having image rights or no photograph actually being available (which makes you wonder what the cartoons were based on!). The days before the internet, when someone could try compete with Panini and release an album calling Hansen "Hausen".

@Gio will enjoy this, the Scotland page even has a separate area to go at length about Souness as one of the star players going into the WC.

Those caricatures are brilliant. I like Alan Rough's scorpion attempt a good decade before Higuita did it against England.

My mate had the '86 panini one - it was a proper bit of kit, came in a chunky ring-binder.

It's no surprise that little startup sticker company from Uruguay never made it against the might of Panini. For starters most of the players featuring for other countries were the ones from '82 who didn't even show up in '86. McGrain was probably retired by then! I'm still pretty sure "Graham" there is supposed to be Strachan as well

They weren't even stickers but paper-based and I spent many hours mixing flour and water to stick them

BTW, is it me or Fenwick looks like Beckham there?

I am currently doing the write-ups as we speak. :D

Gimme an hour. I think I'll complete by then. Cheers.

After being impressed seeing how complete most teams are even at the first stage we need to take some time and discuss the future transfers. Teams are looking like they may not really want more than 1-2-3 players at max so maybe we will allow more TP-points or so to try and see a development of the team.

That would be a major rule change that penalises those who more carefully planned out their TP allocation.

The whole point was seeing well constructed teams and not superteams. Stick to it.

We will see how it turns out. It looks as if some teams just need one improvement in the next three reinforcements. Could be more detrimental in terms of enjoyment than it is a benefit though for these teams.

We will see which managers goes through and how many they plan to sign and if they'd desire a change.

It's called a draft, not a reinforcement challenge, so long as they don't keep playing against the same team I don't see the big deal. They can have the core side nailed and work on variations to adapt to future challenges, for instance.
