Iker Casillas
One of the best keepers of his generation, a tremendous match winner and a fantastic leader, Saint Iker as he's called by his fans has led his club and country to many honours while being an absolute rock at the back. He lifted the Champions League this week, and has lifted the World Cup and two European Championships among other titles. A brilliant shot stopper, his reflexes and anticipation is second to none, making
miracle saves like this. A genuine match winner in goal.
Maxime Bossis
One of the classiest defenders of his time, and equally versatile, Bossis was a calm and composed customer capable of playing all across the backline. Blessed with excellent pace, stamina and anticipation, he was equally skilled going forward as he was in defense. For a defender, his ability on the ball was marvellous and you would often see him gliding past his opponents. Had a fantastic international career with France in the 80s, giving a stellar performance against Germany in the 82 semi final.
Des Walker
In an era which saw a great array of British CBs emerge, Walker stood out ahead of most. What he lacked in his distribution, he more than made up for it with his perfect timed tackles and marking ability. Blessed with great pace, as well.
Paolo Montero
A man notorious for his discipline, Montero was as mean as they come as a center back. Aggressive and tenacious, Montero was a natural leader who was a mainstay of the powerhouse Juventus team through most of his career. Also adept as a left back, his ability to move across and cover for the fullback came handy a lot of times. As no nonsense as they come.
Denis Irwin
Hardly needs an introduction on this forum. Mr. consistent, the metronome, an utmost reliable name on the teamsheet for us, Irwin was a complete fullback in every way. A vital cog of our treble winning defense and for many he holds a place as the best left back the club has had. Going forward, Irwin was intelligent and skillful, often spraying the ball with ease, or making a trademark marauding run. Also possessing effecting shooting technique, he was a threat from set pieces and took our penalties regularly. Safe as houses.
Luis Fernandez
Famously known for being a part of the
carre magique through his years for France, Fernandez provided the defensive stability and platform that allowed the French team enjoy a golden period in the 80s, while winning the European Championship in 1984. He brings work rate, tenacity, stamina and immense bravery to the team.
Soren Lerby
I cannot put it in better words than The Guardion did, so I will save us all the time.
A force of nature blessed with a frankly obscene will to win. Lerby was seriously hard: he played with his socks rolled down and without shinpads – in its own way every bit as cool as Viv Richards not wearing a helmet in cricket –
and in November 1985 he played two games in the same day, first a World Cup qualifier against Ireland and then a German Cup semi-final for Bayern Munich against Bochum. Lerby, who usually started on the left of midfield, had the lot. He was a forceful runner with the ball; a good short passer and a fantastic long passer; an unyielding ball winner and a tireless harrier; and an excellent long-range shooter.
Michael Essien
A complete powerhouse of a midfielder at his peak, "The Bison" was a fearsome opponent who delivered the goods consistently and on the biggest of occasions. While completely capable of doing a mean defensive job and sticking to his man like a leech, he was much more than that, and had enormous presence going forward.
A beautifully clean striker of the ball he was an endless reserve of energy and stamina who could dominate the best of midfields.
Pep Guardiola
An integral cog of Cruyff's dream team, Guardiola was pass the ball like very, very few others could. A deep lying playmaker, Guardiola's passing, creativity and vision carved open the tightest of defenses in a split second. Words do not do justice to this wonderfully gifted midfielder, so here's a small clip of some of his glorious moments.
Micheal Platini
A Ballon D'or win is a dream for most footballers, but this man won it three in a row. One of the all time legends of the game, Platini was as artistic as he was deadly. A complete attacking midfielder, the Frenchman was the heart of the French and Juventus teams of the 80s, winning the Euro, CL and various domestic leagues. Creator, Scorer, Leader. His 9 goals at the Euro 84 stand as a record till date. An unstoppable force, was a fine free kick taker as well.
Cristiano Ronaldo
Celebrating his second Champions League this week, months after celebrating his second Ballon D'or, Cristiano Ronaldo has cemented his name in the all time greats of the game. A complete machine, Ronaldo has scored at a phenomenal rate for the major part of his career. A complete attacking force, he can score in any way possible, and combined with electric pace and movement, he's a headache for any defense. As unbelievable as his team at Madrid has been, his 6 years at United are unforgettable, particularly the 07-08 season where he drove United to a glorious double. If all that wasn't enough, he shares his bed with the gorgeous Irina Shayk!
George Weah
With 5 Ballon D'ors between Platini and Cristiano, it doesn't hurt to add a sixth. "King George", was a complete center forward who dazzled the audiences with his wonderful dribbling and pace, tearing apart the strong Italian defenses. Most might remember his wonderful goal against Verona where he ran the whole length of the pitch beating several players in the process. Along with his individual brilliance, he was also an asset when it came to linking up play and contributing in the buildups.
