Tour De France 2013

Well there you go. Valverde struggling after a tyre problem. If the gap remains then it's definitely race over

Really hope that he can get back up with the lead group. But it really does just push the win more and more Froome's way.

What's the race etiquette? Should Sky have slowed down?

I do remember the front pack slowing down due to large crashes before when it affected things. But I don't think their is to much etiquette/requirement for them to slow down just for one rider

You're probably right. But increasing the pace like Belkin did seems poor form to me

Why do Belkin care about keeping Valverde back from Froome??

Well it's a massive cluster feck at the moment but essentially:

Kittel had a tyre problem, so OPQS increased the pace.
Valverde had a problem Belkin started helping OPQS set the pace. Belkin have 2 riders in the top 6 and Mollema is 3rd overall.

Valverde got caught up at a real bad time

Ah didn't realise they had a man that high up in the overall.

Porte looks to be struggling again. Seems his massive ride in the first mountains has really hit him hard as the race has gone on.

I think Porte's just taking it easy, in anticipation of the alps.

What a perfect stage for Sky though! They have done nothing and both Movistar and Belkin have over committed on an innocuous stage and Froome increases his lead!! Only consolation is Quintana is still there

Wait a minute. Contador attacking!!

quite possible he is.

Interesting move by contador, They have broken away from Froome a bit, would be good if they can get some time back from him

Terrible luck for Valverde but what a day so far.

Interestingly, 4 of the top 6 are in that leading group. Froome has to be worried

Sky are finally trying to drag that group back. This stage has been good viewing so far. Lets hope they can keep pulling away

Great stage. Everyone in the top 6 other than Valverde gains a minute over Froome

Sky looked totally shot I must say

Would never have happened if Boasson was still in the game. Slightly surprised by Froome's lack of vigilance in the crosswinds.

This was one of the greatest Tour stages of the last 10 years. Omega Pharma Quick-Step initiated everything by setting up a first 'waaier' to get rid of Kittel. Don't know what the English term is, but it's a tactical move when you have a strong side wind. You increase the speed in the peleton, pull the whole peleton to one side of the road and effectively break it in pieces (waaiers) because there's not enough room for everyone to sit outside of the wind. And after it breaks, it is extremely difficult to get back from one peleton to the next. Then Belkin also joined and then Valverde dropped out of the first group with a puncture.

Why do Belkin care about keeping Valverde back from Froome??

Well, Mollema is going for a podium. And getting rid of Valverde is one huge step towards that goal. What happened today initially had nothing to do with Sky. Untill Saxo decided to give it a huge pull as well at the end and the peleton broke in front of Froome.

You seem to be quite the fan of Voeckler. I like to see him ride because he's an attacking cyclists. And while he's a very good allround rider, he's not in the same league as Contador, Schleck, Froome, etc in the mountains. He simply isn't a real climber. The yellow jersey he held a few years ago gave him wings, but that was actually the only Tour he could follow the real climbers in the mountains. I'm actually not sure what your point is with Voeckler. He participated in 10 Tours and only made the top 50 three times. (4th, 26th and 18th)

Just to correct you, Voeckler is NOT an "all-rounder", he is a "Puncheur", which has nothing to do with being an "all-rounder", "meilleur grimper", or "sprinter."

Tomorrow will be a tough day for Sky and especially Froome. He has never tackled a mountain like Mont Ventoux before, whereas Contador has done it once and did it in a time of 58:45 seconds. This climb will be nothing like Bonascre on stage 8, that is for sure. Suffice to say, the best time wasn't done by Lance Armstrong, even when he was pumped full of drugs.

Oh I just watched the finish, poor Simon. He did so well there. Great finish, have a go at that crowd it was enormous.

What happened to Valverde? Can anyone re-cap. I didn't see the last two nights.

A tyre issue coupled with getting caught in the cross winds and an increase in pace from two teams in the Peloton. Terribly unlucky
