Television Top Gear

Funny how David Cameron's close friend Jeremy Clarkson's departure weakens the BBC at a time when the government is attempting to...weaken the BBC.

Gotta be honest, mate - I've never read that theory anywhere beyond my own post...so it's probably me being bonkers.

Been given a budget of about 4 million per episode. Hopefully this leads to more of the specials.
 That's more than that movie they filmed the chase sequences for on the show. Imagine how many caravans they could afford to blow up every week!

Say what you will about them, they are good at they do. I think I'm going to try and catch up with this.

That's mental for a publically funded show... But then it is also the Beeb's biggest earner, so maybe it's worth it. If the new series is a flop though, it'll be easy fodder for all the "Get rid of the lisence fee!" chatter

It's the Amazon show getting the 4 million budget.

It is a cash cow though, not very often you have a ready made hugely popular show just hit the open market.

I think that's the figure for the Amazon Prime one with the old lot, isn't it?

We're in the actual hell have they got a £4.5 million budget per episode from?

That's a tremendous amount of money for each episode.

That's probably £1.5m to Clarkson, £1.5 split between the other two and £1.5 to actually pay for production.

Yeah but imagine the cinematography when they're able to travel all over the world on a whim. The Vietnam special was truly stunning, and they all showcase some absolutely beautiful parts of the world. Really looking forward to it.

The cinematography on Top Gear was outstanding.

The BBC are reporting that Clarkson will host Have I Got News For You when series 50 starts on October 2nd - his first BBC appearance since it all happened.

Yeah one thing with top gear is they always showed in detail the beauty of countries they visited. It's actually like watching a travel programme at times more than a car show but that's OK by me. There's not many places they could go that they haven't already tbh

Who pays for it though is it Amazon prime dropping that money? I heard it would be on Netflix too even fit Amazon it's still some serious dollar to be dropping per episode. With that budget its sure to be good though.

Top Gear itself is pretty much doomed if names like Zoe Ball are mentioned as potential hosts.

The BBC will still make a tidy sum from the rights on old shows.

There's a shit load of old full seasons on Netflix which they'll be getting royalties for.

So the BBC are employing Clarkson to host Have I Got News For You despite having sacked him because they didn't want him near the BBC because of his fracas. Good logic.

HIGNFY hires 3 of their 5 talents on a freelance basis and it's up to the producers to hire people not the BBC as a whole. They probably think hiring him is worth the jokes the other 4 will be able to make at his expense.

They didn't sack Clarkson. They just didn't renew his contract.

I knew someone was going to say this.

You're right, but still they quite clearly only didn't renew his contract because of the fracas then they go and reemploy him for another show. What sort of message does that convey.

btw I wanted Clarkson to stay at top gear but the way the BBC have handled it hasn't been great.
