Television Top Gear

I watched one episode, I think the first of the last season where they were on that water raft and sprayed a load of people who were sat outside a river-side cafe. It was blatantly staged and it really took some of the enjoyment away.
Yeah, that fooled no one :nervous:

Yeah the hover craft episode was shit. I love the road trips but they do go over the top trying to be funny, and it comes out a bit forced looking. Still, I always enjoy watching and don't take it seriously.

So just finally saw the first ep last night. Supermarket sweeps was excellent haha

I hadn't watched it for a very long time, as I thought the "jokes" were stale and shite and it was becoming a parody of itself.

Clarkson behind the wheel in supermarket sweep, rule no1: Don't hit anything or points will be deducted. I thought to myself "This'll be the bit where Clarkson makes it his mission to drive into everything" Low and behold, Clarkson drives into all the shelves. I turned it off!

I live close to Mclaren in Woking so I have seen a few P1's being test driven on the roads, and it has by far the most road presence of all car's apart from maybe the Bugatti IMO.

It's quite literally ridiculous how many people just stop and stare at the thing, and while Ferrari's etc look beautiful they are almost just another car these days due to the popularity.

This car will have that rarity factor that makes people go WTF IS THAT.

Much smaller in real life than you would expect also.

Just caught up with last night's episode. Going round Chernobyl must be quite awe-inspiring, I've seen the pictures but going round in the flesh must be something else, not that I would with the current levels of radiation!

They overdid it on the radiation thing though, as per many things Top Gear. It's pretty safe to walk around the place, I mean they do tours there after all.

I thought it was a decent episode but I would've liked to see them actually properly explode Chernobyl and not just do some silly competition like they did that wastes time in boring Ukraine instead.

Also, that Danish car, not going to sell a single unit now!

I think that was done well enough in the 80's.

Come on who is going to spend £800,000 on it, wildly over-priced.
I thought it was a decent EP.

I really want to experience that Nissan GT-R launch control one day.

I actually think the 918 looks far better than the McLaren, they're just not pimping it up as much cause it's not British.

Nah, Hammond has always being pro Porsche and owns one as said on last weeks show and Clarkson always seems to go against them, its got nothing to do with the McLaren or it being British. Although in last weeks review of it it Clarkson did talk about British engineering and why not, it is. Hammond loves Porsches, Zondas and Yank muscle cars above anything.

Also worth mentioning that Jay Leno (who's been on the show) loves McLarens and has owned them all, even done a Youtube video about his trip to the factory so I guess he'd be a bit biased towards it to, don't think he's British though....

Have to say I prefer the McLaren, impressive bit of kit so hope it beats it round the track and the ring time. The last one and the F1 are special too and they deserve all the hype they get IMO

The most depressing thing about the 918 piece was that they let Hammond drive it and he is an awful driver. Don't get me wrong, he's a proper car enthusiast and knows his stuff, if he didn't act like a buffoon all the time, but he can't drive for toffee & shouldn't be allowed near anything decent.

Clarkson may be a a bit of a dick a lot of the time, but, give him his due, he's a decent enough wheelman for a non-professional driver. Otherwise, can't they just get Tiff Needell on to drive the proper gear?

Pretty good that tonight. Clarkson going "I can see why they should be glue these things" about the horses. Genuine

As much as I love the specials and think they should just do them a few times a year, claiming they were miles of course, but ten minutes earlier claiming they were near the prebooked hotel doesn't do much for hiding the scripting

I don't think they actually think anyone believes it's genuine anyway. It's like watching wrestling, you know it's fake, they know you know it's fake but everyone just carries on pretending and it works. It's just mindless entertainment.

Naypyidaw is one weird-ass city. No people and 20-lane roads. FFS.
Not really, it's one of the fastest growing cities in the world. if anything it's clever, they've prepared for the inevitable surge in population. I wish Dublin had some roads like that!

I can't see Naypyidaw ever growing to a size where 20-lane roads would be necessary, but in theory the idea of building an entire capital city is good, as long as you can get people to move there. At the moment, it looks like the Burmese government are exagerrating the number of inhabitants in Naypyidaw to make it seem less ridiculous.

Most of whom are too poor to own a car.

In fact, as of 2010, there are 7 road vehicles per 1000 inhabitants. A road vehicle is, according to Wikipedia, automobiles, SUVs, vans, buses, commercial vehicles and freight motor vehicles, not motorbikes or other two-wheelers.

I want to enjoy the specials but I can't see past the scripting. I can't find it funny when they're pretending Jeremy has accidentally hooked his own truck with a crane and he's going "what?" while it's obvious what's going on. I know they do it for entertainment purposes but I'm sure they could just do it normally with no scripting and enough funny stuff would happen.

Also, shot of fruit getting hit by Jeremy's truck, a camera already aimed at the fruit, of course.

For sure.. they have gradually been amping up the emphasis on scripted comedy moments for years now, but it was funnier before and felt more authentic.

Yeah it used to have the odd scripted moment but now basically the entire thing is.
