Top 4 race 2016/17

Mixed feeling. Good point for the top 4th, crap one for the title race. Oh well, we were never going to catch Chelsea, so "it's ok" in the end.
Don't really see how it's a good point for top 4 to be honest, City have gone past you and United have gained 2 points on you. Spurs still have to play, so we'll see.

It's the case of having still rescued 1 point. Not happy overall, but it could have been worse.

I am very nervous about the Liverpool game. It is now of HUGE proportions.

Happily though, we'll be heading into the game at Old Trafford during our best spell, whilst Liverpool have stumbled and look a little less impressive recently. We have reason to be optimistic at least.

I think it'll be a fascinating tactical encounter. One that Mourinho is more than capable of winning. Physically speaking, we're far stronger than Liverpool, I hope we use that to our advantage.

Tottenham to win..... maybe two three years ago but not this season. Spurs is a decent team and Poch is very likable manager but after him..... it's hard to find a good reason to celebrate a Kane or a Alli goal.... don't you agree Glastonbury

Stumbled, yet beat Everton and City.

If I were Arsenal and City I would be very worried. Chelsea and Liverpool have shown that they are both good enough and consistent enough to get top 4 fairly comfortably

Utd are clearly the team in a false position. The period were we dropped so many points was mainly down to bad luck and Mourinho still tinkering to find his best XI

I would say on what I have seen in the last 3 months, the best three teams I the league are Chelsea, Liverpool and Utd

Not sure that sarcasm is needed.

They did stumble against Sunderland and have looked less impressive over the winter period. They were really poor against Everton.

Hence why there is reason to be optimistic, I am more content to play them at this moment in time. That's all.

Not being sarcastic just pointing out they beat Everton away and City at home (something we failed to do, when we were stumbling), regardless of how they played and how much I dislike them that's the truth.

True. It's just that I have been less impressed with them recently, they look a little less fluid at times and I think if we make it a physical tussle, we'll come out on top.

See? Arsenal and Liverpool both dropped points this match week :)

We are a lot better than our position suggests. It's points, not the number of teams, we should care about.

Everyone in the top six WILL drop points. Sometimes in unexpected games. The idea that the top six will keep steam rolling the weaker teams is wrong. This is a competitive league, the most competitive in the world.

I said a while back that I think we will finish second and I stand by that. Nobody will want to play us now. We are the new form team in the league and playing well more often than not. There is still so much of the season left and anything can happen in a run of games or with bad injuries. I think all the top 6 will drop unexpected points but I think we are genuinely in the top 3 best teams in the country and with our new consistency and fight it will show through by the end of the season. We have a squad that should have been challenging for the league anyway and a very good manager who finally has them playing closer to their potential. He also knows better than anyone what it takes to succeed in this league and will know all our opponents inside out. This season is so exciting. The race for top 4 is fascinating!

A win against Liverpool is an absolute must. If we can keep that momentum going we could potentially put some air between us:

Liverpool:

8th FACUP
11th FLCUP

15th United A
21st Swansea H
25th FLCUP
31st Chelsea H
4th Hull A
11th Spurs H
27th Leicester A
4th Arsenal H

12th Burnley H
18th City A

Potential for a lot of dropped points there. 3 Easy wins, 6 tough ones and Cup matches and international breaks in between.

That's... that's not how we work.

The 6 fixtures you've pointed out as "difficult", are the easy ones that should get us the wins and worst case scenario a draw or two.
The 3 "easy" fixtures are the difficult ones, except two of these are at home, so we will only drop 1-3 points at Hull, other than that this is our easiest schedule to date.

This season, we got 11 out of 15 points against top six, that's 3 wins and 2 draws.
But then we lost to Burnley, Bournemouth and gave 1 point to David William Moyes.

Talk about deluded.

Let's see how Liverpool are gonna cope without Manè for the whole january at least. They also have some other key injuries. I think they are definitely buying someone this month though.

I feel like every top team bar Chelsea and Spurs needs to buy someone this month. Arsenal are looking thin in depth, as does United's midfield. 1-2 injuries could be catastrophic for both teams.

As a Spurs fan I am officially 'cacking myself' about the match tonight. Hoping for the best but expecting the worst.

Indeed. We are only left with Xhaka and Ramsey in the middle atm.

I get your point but Chelsea win was before they found their rhythm and mourinho did tactically nullify Liverpool, barely giving them a sniff. Your defence being relatively weak (plus mig/karius) vs an in form Pogba and Zlatan would have better chance than a pool attack without mane and Coutinho (?) (still good though) vs a good defence and de gea.

If we beat Liverpool I think anything could happen, even us challenging for the title. But I am not confident about the Liverpool game. They are literally the only team in the league I am slightly scared of. I would be confident of us beating everyone else in our current form.

The Liverpool game is the biggest game if the season for us. If we win I see us carrying on our superb run for many weeks. If we lose I can see us faltering and starting to struggle again.

At the moment only chelsea looks certain to finish in the top 4 :nervous:

Well, maybe at this point we should merge the two threads. Top 4 race could also be title race. Everyone is not that far from each other.

Based on not that much... I fancy Chelsea (shockingly enough) Spurs, and Arsenal to make it, with one of us, City and Liverpool.

Indeed I'd like to see how far behind Arsenal, City and Liverpool we (United) were 6 games ago, if we can claw that back from those teams all it takes is Chelsea to have a wobble and they'll be pulled back as well

Chelsea are obviously in the driving seat and for United first step for us is just getting in the top 4 (and Arsenal now tbf)

Has there ever been a Top 6 closer/with so many points at this stage of the season?

I'm not overly concerned about our league position, but let's pretend that I really am for a second: that wasn't a great result for us in terms of top four.

I think some people are falling under this illusion that Spurs are a bit of a non entity in the race. Personally, I think they're a serious threat and tonight's match could give them some serious momentum.

Feck knows what's going to happen in this race for top four. Spurs looked good tonight, but they also did when they beat City and then their performances after wasn't as great.
Things keep changing constantly so who knows what's gonna happen next. Best we can do is take it one game at a time and keep plugging away in EL.
