Just had a look at the league table and Utd having won 6 games on the trot have moved 0 places while remaining 6th. Has to be some sort of record!

606 - nearly the number of the red beast. ;)

Same situation as Chelsea, win all those games and very little reward for it

League is more competitive than ever

After Liverpool's predictable point loss today, and our win, I'm feeling quite confident about my prediction that it'll be between us and Liverpool for second place this season. We just need to beat them at Old Trafford to narrow the gap to two points, and with our momentum I then expect us to be sitting pretty in second place when we face City on the last Sunday of February.

Of course, if we lose against Liverpool it'll severely dent our chances of getting a top four spot, never mind second. So, no question, in a row of mini cup finals, this is the most important one yet.

Tbf that stat was due to 6th being so far off the rest. We were 9 behind 4th and now we're 5 behind second. It's not as if we're still 9 off the pace.

The problem for you is that you just have to keep on winning. If you stop your winning run you are basically fecked.

There's a good chance the City game will be postponed due to our involvement in the EFL cup final

It's only a problem until we put a couple of teams behind us, which I'm confident that we'll be able to do within the next two rounds. But yeah, until the point we're actually inside the top four, a point loss will feel like a real kick in the teeth for us.

Didn't know that. Oh well!

Yes. Our lack of position movement simply underscores our terrible our form was before December. Despite not moving any position, we've now just about made up for that horrific form and are now genuinely back in the thick of it. The biggest i see is that the Carrick and Herrera positions do not have credible back ups and that will cost us unless Mourinho can get a quality incoming in upcoming transfer window.

Hopefully over the next 2-3 months we can not only get into the top 4, but actually develop a points cushion also.

With the game vs City to be postponed if we make it to the League Cup final, and with both teams having busy schedules involving European competition, it means that game will likely be pushed back to quite late in the season.

This means that in the final few weeks of the season we would have City away, Arsenal away, Spurs away all in quick succession.

I think if you beat Liverpool you would definitely finish in the top 4.

Thats a huge advantage. It would mean after Liverpool we will only face Chelsea who we wouldn't be big favourites to beat all the while our rivals play each other every other weekend. We could put together a fantastic run
We would know what results we need and play them like European ties.

I agree it would be an advantage if we can actually put a run together against the 'lesser' sides. The worry for me is if we don't. I don't like the idea of going into those big games on or around the same points as our top 4 rivals.

Jose gets asked about the table, other teams form, top 4 etc...after every game we won in this stretch. He keeps saying he doesn't look at that and that entire team is looking only at the next game...so should we. Let's get an easy win against Reading with 2nd string and starters rested, smash Hull in the first leg so we can again use 2nd string in the 2nd leg and rest starters...before Pool.

We are going to take points off from the fixtures against the team ahead of us to make sure we are in top 4.

Because I can't see them losing many more points than us against the rest of the teams.

We will see how jose does against them on 2nd half. We are starting to do pretty well with most other teams.

Six wins on the bounce and still in sixth place. It would be interesting to see a comparison to previous years of the points accumulated by the top 6 at this stage of the season. This is the strongest top six I can remember.

This thread should merge with the title race one, so many overlapping themes and players.

You were lucky again last night, you are on a good run but most of your wins have come against bottom six or seven teams.
We should have a lot of players back for the game with you on the 15th but as it stands yeah I'd say you were favourites for the win. We have one away fixture against the top six teams left, one, against you! You have a handful if I am not mistaken.

All to play for. Because of the way Chelsea are going yesterday almost felt like a loss in some way. Just got to hope for a Spurs win against Chelsea.

Amazing how so much is riding on this one game between us.

How funny that some Arsenal and Liverpool guys here try to downplay the winning run, like, "hey , you have to keep wining or else or you better win EL, the best ticket to CL", meanwhile at best, Arsenal would be ahead by 4 points and Liverpool by 2(with the win against them) and 18 more games to play.

Burnley, Stoke and West Ham at home. That's a full 8 more points we should have on the board. Things have turned for us. I think we'll comfortably finish top 4.

People write off Jose at their peril, I've had Utd down as a sure bet for top 4 because of him since the start.

not sure what maths you are using but 2 dropped points in 3 games equates to 6 points dropped not 8

That's an excellent opportunity to go within 2 points of Liverpool if we can beat them.

It was only about 5 games ago that everyone was saying how poor a season United were having and how great of one Liverpool were having.

If United win that, I can see United being above Liverpool come February. I've said all along that Liverpool would stutter post February. And it looks like Mourinho has found a flame after months of trying to spark his team

Amazing to think how far we were behind just a month ago, and now we can potentially close the gap to Liverpool to two points with a home win. If we beat Liverpool I think we'll continue our unbeaten run for a while in the league (with the odd draw here and there), which will also be necessary if the City game is postponed. Reckon we will make the League Cup final, so hopefully having the latter stages of the Europa League to contend with along with away games against City, Arsenal and Tottenham will make an exciting, but very tough ending to the season. Exciting times ahead, especially if we manage to beat the Scousers.

I'm very encouraged by our recent form but unfortunately the Top teams around are rarely dropping points as much as we would like, so it's making breaking in to that Top 4 even harder. We simply have to beat Liverpool if we have any chance.

I genuinely believe any of Top 6 can win it. Chelsea will drop points at some point, and any team can have a good run.

A win against Liverpool is an absolute must. If we can keep that momentum going we could potentially put some air between us:

Liverpool:

8th FACUP
11th FLCUP

15th United A
21st Swansea H
25th FLCUP
31st Chelsea H
4th Hull A
11th Spurs H
27th Leicester A
4th Arsenal H

12th Burnley H
18th City A

Potential for a lot of dropped points there. 3 Easy wins, 6 tough ones and Cup matches and international breaks in between.

Chelsea's next 5 fixtures in the league are-
Spurs (A)
Leicester (A)
Hull (H)
Liverpool (A)
Arsenal (H)

I wouldn't be surprised if they lose points in all of the 3 away games coming up, at the very least you wouldn't expect them to win away to Spurs and Liverpool. So I think Chelsea dropping points is around the corner.

If only Hull weren't so naive they would cause them problems. They have played well recently.

Let's beat Liverpool first...And its 17 more games to play.

1 point off as it stands. 1 point!

Not a big deal? Win tonight and you are just 6 points off of top at basically the halfway stage.

Chelsea got game in hand though, which they will most likely win. So it would be 9 points.. Arsenal are definitely out if they lose tonight though. It's a bigger deal for them in terms of 4th, as United are hunting them.

great weekend for our top 4 chances. I'm getting more optimistic now
