Top 4 race 2016/17

Don't think so. Every top 6 teams can finish with about 2 points per game.
Anyone know how I'd go about finding out what the highest points total every achieved by the team finishing fifth is, without taking too long over it (IE, my technologically challenged method would be to go through premier league tables one by one from Wikipedia)?

I'd take 3rd - Champions League football and no qualification required. That has to be a realistic target for the moment.

Arsenal and City supporters have the most to worry about as it stands.

If we beat Liverpool next week, they'll need to start worrying about slipping outside the top 4.

Spurs finished with 72 in 12/13, the highest ever 5th place points tally. The average seems to be around 62.

This season is madness. The top 4 is changing week in week out and United is still 6th. Getting very close though

And us tbf given we're behind all of them
But we have the performances and momentum and we are one of the reasons they should be bricking it. The gap is down to nothing and they're bang out of form.
It's harder to start playing well than it is to keep playing well imo

Arsenal and City are shaky, Chelsea have shown they can be beat and Liverpool are inconsistent. Spurs and United have been on the most consistent run as of late, think we can make a proper challenge. Still a long way to go, if the players can keep motivated and we can snag a few points off our rivals when we play them, don't see why we couldn't win the title or at least make the top 4.

We absolutely need to beat them when we play them though, can't put our hope into them slipping up, starting with Liverpool.

Yep. They will also be still in the title race in Chelsea draw or lose v Leicester.

It wouldn't worry me that much. It's one defeat against a very good side. As long as we respond well to a defeat should it happen, then it's manageable albeit not preferable obviously.

I think we'll get 7-9 points from our home games vs Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs. I also think we've coped fairly well with the Christmas period considering the injuries to Matip and Coutinho. Based on that I'm still confident we'll get top four.

It is looking a fair bit closer from first down to sixth though.

They have the best fixture list tho. They are playing only away to City from the top 10 teams as it stands and are the only team played 11 times away this season. Of course they are prone to losing points to teams like Sunderland, but surely one loss to us won't ruin them as they have every chance to bounce back.

If we beat them, they could easily find themselves in the fifth place right after that match (if all three of City, Spurs and Arsenal win).

Madness is right. The top 3 have dropped 8 pts out of last possible 45.

No more qualifiers required for 4th place if I am not wrong ?

I love how someone says that we are inconsistent yet we are second in the league having lost the fewest amount of games and scored the most amount of goals.

Another twist yesterday, there will be more no doubt. Biggest league game between us for sometime.

Great result last night. Its a long way to go and I am not throwing the towel just yet for the title. Result showed that chelsea can bleed.

If we can close the gap to 6 pts before we play them in April the title will be realistic.

So... we're the only team in the league with a 10-game unbeaten streak? Noice! I think if we keep this up for another 2-3 games, the title/top 4 race will be very very interesting.

& that's not taking into account United have Spurs & Arsenal away in May. It's hard to see us going into free-fall, but stranger things have happened in football.

Does winning the Europa League mean a qualification match or straight into the group stage?

Straight qualification as top seed.
Ahh lets not bother with this top 4 malarkey then, we'll just win that thing!

Imagine though if Tottenham or United finished 4th and won the Europa and the other team finished 5th and lost the final.

I was wrong actually it's just the group stage not as top seeds.

Has there ever been a Top 6 closer/with so many points at this stage of the season?
Last year after 20 games:
1. arsenal 42pts
2. leicester 40pts
3. city 39pts
4. tottenham 36pts
5. man utd 33pts
6. west ham 32pts

seems about the same as this year, 10pts between 1. and 6., top 4 even closer last year

The gap is the same between 1 and 6 but the points total is way out. 6th this year would be 3rd last year and 3rd this year woul be first last year.

The Top 6 is immense this year. We'd be 3 points off the top last season.

Moyes' season there were 7 points between 1st and 6th.

1 Arsenal 20 21 45
2 Man City 20 34 44
3 Chelsea 20 19 43
4 Liverpool 20 23 39
5 Everton 20 13 38
6 Tottenham 20 -1 37

The biggest thing this year is the gap between 6th and 7th.

Good point. I'm definitely enjoying it more this year than last :D

Last year's Premier League was sub par. The Leicester 'fairytale' blinded people to that fact.

In 2015/16 Leicester won the title quite comfortably with 81 points. We lost a title on goal difference with 89 points in 2012, then won it with 91 points the year after.

I do not think the top six is immense this year. Its simply reverted to type.

I think I'm right in saying, since Mourinho's first Chelsea began the 'marathon sprint' approach to the Premier League, only twice has the title been won with less than 85 points. I expect that to be the case this season as well.

I take points totals with a pinch of salt, its all relative to the season you're in. In 99 we won the league with 79 points then the year after we won it with 91, it was basically the same team and you obviously couldn't argue the 99 team was one of the weakest Champions we just drew more games but did enough to stay on top. The winning totals increasing probably coincides with more champions leagues slots and teams having more to play for for more of the season.

Yep, this season reminds me of that one. The only difference is that United and Tottenham are much stronger so it's really difficult to predict how it is gonna finish. Image Chelsea dropping some other points. Their place in the top four would be in danger as well!
